Standing outside the local police station in her village in northeast India, 19-year-old Nureja Khatun is anxious. Cradling her 6-month-old baby in her arms, she has been waiting to catch a glimpse of her husband before the police take him away to court.
Nearly an hour later, she sees her husband, Akbar Ali, for just a few seconds when he is shuffled into a police van. An officer slams the door in her face before she is able to get any answers.
“Please release my husband. Otherwise take me into custody as well,” she pleaded.
Khatun’s husband is one of more than 3,000 men, including Hindu and Muslim priests, who were arrested nearly two weeks ago in the northeastern state of Assam under a wide crackdown on illegal child marriages involving girls under the age of 18. […]
In India, the legal marriageable age is 21 for men and 18 for women. Poverty, lack of education, and social norms and practices, particularly in rural areas, are considered reasons for child marriages across the country.
UNICEF estimates that at least 1.5 million girls under 18 get married in India every year, making it home to the largest number of child brides in the world — accounting for a third of the global total. India’s National Health Family Survey data shows that more than 31% of marriages registered in Assam involve the prohibited age group. …

Akbar Ali you say, ‘eh???
When I first moved to Hawaii legal age of marriage was 14 for girls and 16 for guys.
they made it 16 years for girls and guys some time in the early 2000’s.
Hard to believe India is stricter than Banana Republic Hawaii.
I think my wife and I married at age 21 in 1977.
we are the same age for a few months of the year.
Still married.
We made better decisions than our parents did.
My mother had 4 husbands. Glad she didn’t pick out my wife.
My great-grandmother arrived in Connecticut in 1872 from Millstreet, Cork, Ireland at the age of 15. She came with her husband and 2 year-old son.
At age 22, she was a widow with 3 children.
“...At age 22, she was a widow with 3 children.”
People were not spoiled brats in those days, hunh?
Of course, it's hard to be sure about such things, as they occurred such a long time ago.
I think I may have married at age 23 in 1976, but I'm not sure. It may have been when I was age 25 in 1975.
Long time ago, as I said.
Regards,
Ok, I’ll bite on this apple… why do you “think” you married at 21 and not actually know how old you were? Your post is one that makes a person go, hmmmmm…
Arranged marriages fare better than American style.
Do they?
Seems like it comes down to legal sanction. Mix any of it with “no-fault” divorce and what would happen?
Married in August, birthday in October so I wasn’t ofically 22 yet.
“I think” is far better than I believe.
What you actually “know” is a schema your brain makes up to make thimgs seem real.
Want to talk some more philosphy?
How about why you think 2+2 = 4 and that is a complete act of faith?
My first university major was mathematics.
Aloha freind.
This was much more common 100+ years ago. My great grandmother was forced to marry at 12. This was in Ukraine. She stayed married to my great-grandfather until his death even after they moved to the US. Different times, different cultures.
When a girl is poor, getting married to a guy with a good job is a way out of poverty.
It’s a better solution than what we do in the US, where young girls would get pregnant, so as to qualify for government cash, and raise fatherless kids.
Your Flux capacitor needs adjustment if you cannot fix an important date.
How have you been able to live with a woman and not be 100% certain of your wedding date?
I’m pretty darn sure it was August 29, 1977.
a day that lives in infamy.
I gues my sublime humor escapes you,
Bra.
Wow, such horrible, horrible poverty in India.
(Too bad they don’t have airports to live in.)
You shouldn't be surprised when a poor woman gets upset when the breadwinner of the family gets taken away, leaving her to figure out how to get money to buy food with.
Americans don't understand poverty. Real poverty is when you have to watch your baby starve to death in your arms.
I knew it was bad there, but didn’t realize how bad. Talk about failed government !
