Ukraine can’t retake Crimea soon, Pentagon tells lawmakers in classified briefing

Ukrainian forces are unlikely to be able to recapture Crimea from Russian troops in the near future, four senior Defense Department officials told House Armed Services Committee lawmakers in a classified briefing. The assessment is sure to frustrate leaders in Kyiv who consider taking the peninsula back one of their signature goals.

It’s unclear what led the briefers to that assessment. But the clear indication, as relayed by three people with direct knowledge of Thursday’s briefing’s contents, was that the Pentagon doesn’t believe Ukraine has — or soon will have — the ability to force Russian troops out of the peninsula Moscow seized nearly a decade ago.

No reason not to try!

Soros and his buddies at Blackrock REALLY want that oil off the coast.

Ukraine can’t retake any of the annexed territory that is now part of the Russian Federation.

What’s unclear? The arms deliveries are hugely slow-walked.

Maybe someone in the West will give Ukraine their F-15s.

How to end this insane war is simple.

1. A ceasefire by both sides followed by free and fair elections of each province.

2. Have elections in each province of The Ukraine, supervised by outside neutral parties. Let the provinces go to Russia or the Ukraine as they choose.

3. If Putin will not agree to this, inform him that military aid to Ukraine will be without limits with the exceptions of nuclear weapons. If Putin goes nuke we go nuke and it is all over for both.

4. If Zelensky will not agree, inform him that all military and financial aid will stop immediately. Russia would soon control the totality of the Ukraine.

The above 4 points would stop our insane march to a thermonuclear conflict with only one winner. The winner would be China unscathed, and the West and Russia left in ruins. It is really pretty simple. As simple as a school yard bully that meets his match. It is no different.

What price will the West pay for provoking and prolonging this conflict?

NATO is a bully sorely in need of a bloody nose.

Reasonable. But we need to have the right President to pull this off. Eisenhower. Reagan. Trump

Biden is probably being manipulated by the Military–industrial complex so it looks like they will allow Zelensky fight to the last Ukrainian as long as we are getting paid.

Ukrainian forces can't even stop Russia from extending further into Ukraine despite us spending hundreds of billions helping them so far. That gravy train will stop long before Russia is evicted from Crimea. The only real question left seems to be what happens to Kiev.

If it was a classified briefing, then whoever leaked the information should be behind bars.

This has problems,

1. I doubt Putin would agree, other than as an excuse for a cease-fire in order to improve the Russian military position.
2. There has been large scale population replacement already. Many people have fled, in both directions. Many also have fled because these are war zones (all of Ukraine effectively).
3. There will be endless complaints (most of them valid to some degree) about every step of this, on both sides. All of them are likely causes or pretexts for war, or a resumption of war.

Ultimately such suggestions are putting the cart before the horse.

Putin might be content to conquer all of Donetsk and then he will ask Zelensky for a cease fire. Zelensky might agree because his armed forces will become depleted by then.

...or possibly cause a thermonuclear conflict. Many wars are started because people assume they know exactly what other people, in a different country and culture, will do. In reality, they very often are mistaken...

Japan has a lot of spare F-15s (30+) it’s been trying to give to the Philipines. And up to 150 eventually.
