Most U.S. adults think gun violence is increasing nationwide and want to see gun laws made stricter, according to a new poll that finds broad public support for a variety of gun restrictions, including many that are supported by majorities of Republicans and gun owners.
The poll by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also shows majorities of U.S. adults view both reducing gun violence and protecting gun ownership as important issues.
The poll was conducted between July 28 and Aug. 1, after a string of deadly mass shootings — from a New York grocery store to a school in Texas and a July 4 parade in Illinois — and a 2020 spike in gun killings that have increased attention on the issue of gun violence. Overall, 8 in 10 Americans perceive that gun violence is increasing around the country, and about two-thirds say it’s increasing in their state, though less than half believe it’s increasing in their community, the poll shows.
The question of how to prevent such violence has long divided politicians and many voters, making it difficult to change gun laws. In June, a conservative majority on the Supreme Court expanded gun rights, finding a constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defense. […]
The poll found 71% of Americans say gun laws should be stricter, including about half of Republicans, the vast majority of Democrats, and a majority of those in gun-owning households. …

We already have a strict gun law - Amendment II.
That’s because that’s what the lying toads in the “media” keep telling them to say. It’s getting disgusting to talk to idiots about politics anymore. As soon as they open their mouth they start regurgitating crap they heard on TV word for word. Not one original thought of their own.
It’s just a way for them to say they want Minority Urban Youth Control without coming off like racists.
If properly worded, a poll can reflect the desired outcome of the pollster.
Tis is a BS poll.
Control or chaos? Or controlling the chaos?
Well, nobody wants THEIR rights taken from them, but them other guys over there do. Those shady mofos don’t need no guns.
The problem is, most every and anyone is a shady mofo to someone else...
The wiser person knows that except for the grace of God, you could the other person. This is what Jesus meant when he said “Love thy neighbor” and then answered who thy neighbor is with the story of the Samaritan helping the robbed and beaten man.
Anything justified to be used against another can eventually be used against you.
The truly smartest know that we all have the same rights... Those rights have to be universal or each one of us have no rights.
I meant to say Jesus said to “Love thy neighbor as you love yourself”.
Gun control is being able to hit your target. I want more control so I can tighten the group in my target.
AP is the worst. They are worse than CNN and MSNBC because they are much more widespread. Almost everything from local news to Yahoo is from AP. They really are an arm of leftists bent on destroying this country. The so called journalists that AP employs come from the finest leftist journalism schools.
They don’t bother rigging the polls anymore. They just report phony results. It’s all about setting us up for another big steal. Why not? It worked like a charm last time.
Yup, I want to live in a world where only criminals and politicians have guns, but then I repeat myself.
YAWN - It’s AP; don’t expect reality here.
What are you waiting for, Demonrat Stalinazis ? Give up your guns (and that also means give up your security that carries guns, too). Fair is fair.
There are lots of good reasons to believe this poll is BS but that doesn’t really matter. There was certainly a time in this country when most Americans would have wanted limitations on Blacks, Jews or Mormons. The will of the majority in a republic is immaterial to the constitutional rights of a minority.
Please explain your red herring.
Like all rat 🐀 polls.
The irony of the University of Chicago running the poll should not be lost here. A state which has the strictest gun laws but the worst gun crime…is telling us this is what “most” Americans want.
I’d be curious to see if many of the people surveyed would be able to name the three functional types of firearms and distinguish between them, be also able to distinguish from single shot and semi automatic and fully automatic types of firearms, give a brief sketch of municipal and state and federal firearms laws in their jurisdiction, etc. You would probably find ignorance of many things pertaining to this issue is their only excuse for supporting stricter gun control laws.
I haven’t watched or listened to any polls since Nov. 2020. They are made up crap by partisan hacks and the “results” are what the pollsters want them to be. Period.
