Tom Cruise's highly-anticipated film Top Gun: Maverick achieved another impressive milestone at the global box office this weekend as it crossed the $1 billion mark.
In addition to becoming the 59-year-old Risky Business actor's most successful film of all time, the sequel to 1986's Top Gun became the first movie of 2022 to reach that rare benchmark after just 31 days in theaters.
With those ticket sales, the movie dethroned Marvel's superhero film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($943 million) as the highest-grossing movie of the year at the global box office.
It's a particularly tremendous feat as the COVID-19 pandemic effectively quashed traditional box office numbers after nearly a quarter of all American movie theaters were closed for 15 months.
Before Top Gun: Maverick became Cruise's biggest hit, his film Mission: Impossible — Fallout held the top spot in his expansive filmography for earning $257 million globally.
The film was originally supposed to be released in June 2020, though Paramount decided to hold off on the release until more fans are able to return, a move that clearly paid off.

Hollywood throws us a bone and people like it
I’m still not giving them my money
This movie is popular for the exact same reason that the first one was/is popular. Hollywood can’t figure it out, but they are still a very far cry from broke.
I went to see it on Friday. I was prepared not to like it, but ended up enjoying it.
One of my very rare forays to the theatre.
Such a cool movie right from the get go. I’ve seen it twice and may see it again.
I like Tom Cruise more and more all the time. I don’t want to give anything away, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised I think even before the movie begins. And from there it only gets better. Not sappy or corny, but people that care and love each other genuinely. Love it
They even get my favorite rock-and roll song of all time - The Who’s “Won’t Be Fooled Again” - in there at a perfect time.
We saw it & enjoyed it. Going to take the grandkids to see it next week.
The film was originally supposed to be released in June 2020, though Paramount decided to hold off on the release until more fans are able to return, a move that clearly paid off.
The first non-woke movie in years blows out the box office. Who knew it would happen? Everybody except the leftist reptiles currently and temporarily running our country.
Hollywood can’t figure it out, but they are still a very far cry from broke.
But, but, but what about Lightyear?
Maybe you’ve seen this 2 minute Tom Cruise 2020 campaign ad. Each time I post it someone says thanks, that was funny. My kind of deal!
I honestly think that Hollywood, the MSM and much of Corporate America are willing to live with sub-optimal profits.
“I honestly think that Hollywood, the MSM and much of Corporate America are willing to live with sub-optimal profits as long as they an ideologically acceptable (e.g., woke) message.”
Absolutely.
To my surprise, this was a well done movie. I give it two thumbs-up.
Tom Cruise has been money since 1981.
Blockbuster after blockbuster.
Seems like America, and the world for that matter, wants to see a movie that resembles at least something close to normal behavior. The character, Maverick, didn’t get a sex change, right?
There is the Doctor Weird-o, Buzz Pervert, Evil Tim Cook (with dinosaurs) and some horror guano.
I wanted to go out but there is nothing playing.
Awesome movie! We loved it!!
I had not seen that ad,
but The Biden was far more charismatic, and had an abundance of Gravitas that the Cruise guy could never match.
Went to see with my granddaughter USNA 2024 Memorial Day. We loved it. She was out in San Diego for wo weeks training. She noticed almost all the males were wearing the mustache.
