The Biden administration is planning to push a policy that would require tobacco companies to reduce the level of nicotine in cigarettes sold in the U.S.
The policy would see the amount of nicotine reduced to 'nonaddictive levels'.
Although it would likely not come into force for several years, the move would likely disrupt the entire tobacco industry.
The Food and Drug Administration first needs to outline the proposed new rules before inviting comments from the public. Then final rules would be published.
Even then, tobacco companies would be able to sue likely delaying any implementation of the policy reports the Wall Street Journal.
The administration had been weighing whether to push ahead with the policy as part of President Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative which hopes to reduce deaths from cancer by at least 50% over the next 25 years.
The move would be the biggest step by the government to curb smoking since 1998 when tobacco companies paid more than $200 billion to help states pay for healthcare.
The FDA describes nicotine as 'an addictive chemical found in cigarettes and other tobacco products.'
Although nicotine is addictive and gets people hooked on cigarettes, the chemical itself does not cause cancer, heart disease or lung disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention blames other harmful compounds in cigarette smoke that are linked with more than 480,000 deaths in the U.S. each year,
The CDC calculates there to be 30.8 million smokers in the nation - about 12.5%. The numbers rose slightly in 2020 during the pandemic.
The amount of nicotine in cigarettes can be reduced through various methods including an adjustment in the blend of tobacco leaves or by using different types of paper or filters

That will play well with the rat base…
Actually maybe a smart idea. The cig manufacturers pay a lot of taxes every year and they make taxes from the sales to people. Take lower nicotine amounts and people will be smoking more to get there proper amount of nicotine. So they will sell more cigs. And kill more people faster.
Yep. That just hit me. It’s a smart idea if you want to kill more people and collect more money in the mean time.
“So people will have to smoke more to get the same buzz. “
... and since it is the tobacco that causes cancer and not the nicotine that means cancers will go up. I am sure the dems have thought of this so I suspect they will tax it more and make it even more expensive to purchase.
I hate cigarettes. But each person should be free to do what they want and not have the government butting in.
It’s not going to make his Illegals happy
Next up... legal pot with THC levels reduced to levels that can't make potheads high.
Should create a huge, thriving black market for those who want their nicotine ‘unfiltered’ and un-controlled by the government.
People will be wrapping their smokes in Nicoderm patches.
This actually started before Biden. Trump’s FDA head was congratulating Biden yesterday for going ahead with their plan.
This is nothing more than legislative virtue signaling. His handlers want to make it look like he’s doing something.
It will be back to “roll your own”. Rolling machines and loose tobacco are readily available. Convenience stores and groceries will lose a profitable items, to the benefit of one shops and online vendors.
The Law of Unintended Consequences? Will people up their use to > a pack a day? Will all else that comes with the inhaled smoke besides nicotine pose an even greater health danger?
I have cigs for this purpose. I keep them in the freezer. I’m afraid to use them though because I am afraid of being shot by the guy sucking down one of my 10 year old cigarettes.
Nice to see Biden's thugs are working on something important - something beyond finding the elusive white supremacists.
That hunt allows White Liberal Elites (WLE) to rifle through all the private information on their sister in law and that hoity-toity? minister's brother. And old neighbors... And that process? It binds them to the secret.
Cigarettes bad. Weed good. What a world.
Actually, that’s great for the cigarette industry as customers will be buying double the number of packs.
By tickin' off smokers? They probably need one after every fill up!
Ooh, and next the idiot in charge will mandate that all alcoholic beverages contain low levels — while in the bottle.
Like price controls, the idiots never, never learn.
First, I will state that I do not and have never smoked. Second, this is none of the government’s business. They are getting involved in something that will only cause a huge black market and crime.
Been rolling my own for last 10 years, adds up to about 70 cents a pack in stead of 7 dollars a pack. It is a better smoke to without all the additives.
