World’s largest vats for growing ‘no-kill’ meat to be built in US

The building of the world’s largest bioreactors to produce cultivated meat has been announced, with the potential to supply tens of thousands of shops and restaurants. Experts said the move could be a “gamechanger” for the nascent industry.

The US company Good Meat said the bioreactors would grow more than 13,000 tonnes of chicken and beef a year. It will use cells taken from cell banks or eggs, so the meat will not require the slaughter of any livestock.

There are about 170 companies around the world working on cultured meat, but Good Meat is the only company to have gained regulatory approval to sell its product to the public. It began serving cultivated chicken in Singapore in December 2020.

Cattle, chicken and other livestock have a huge environmental impact due to methane emissions, the destruction of forests and water use. The consumption of conventional meat in rich nations must fall dramatically to beat the climate crisis, scientists say. Proponents of cultivated meat say it can provide the same taste and feel as conventional meat but with a far smaller environmental impact.

The creation of Good Meat’s 10 new bioreactors is under way, the company says, each of which has a capacity of 250,000 litres and will stand four storeys tall, far bigger than any constructed to date. The US site for the facility is due to be finalised within three months and operational in late 2024, reaching 11,800 tonnes a year by 2026 and 13,700 tonnes by 2030.

The bioreactors are being manufactured as part of an agreement with ABEC, a leading bioprocess equipment manufacturer

How is cultivated meat made?

The manufacturing process begins with acquiring and banking stem cells from an animal. These cells are then grown in bioreactors (known colloquially as cultivators) at high densities and volumes. Similar to what happens inside an animal’s body, the cells are fed an oxygen-rich cell culture medium made up of basic nutrients such as amino acids, glucose, vitamins, and inorganic salts, and supplemented with proteins and other growth factors.

Changes in the medium composition, often in tandem with cues from a scaffolding structure, trigger immature cells to differentiate into the skeletal muscle, fat, and connective tissues that make up meat. The differentiated cells are then harvested, prepared, and packaged into final products. This process is expected to take between 2-8 weeks, depending on what kind of meat is being cultivated. Some companies are pursuing a similar strategy to create milk and other dairy products.

Like artificial intelligence, the line is getting fuzzy.

I can imagine a plot in a Sci-Fi novel, about a society where future women only want to mate with those declining few males who ate real meat, outside of the borg-controlled urban areas (called human-collection areas), because of genetic side-effects discovered from eating lab-meat.

They can stick it up their fourth point of contract.

I will provide the jackhammer to make sure it goes in ALL the way.

Artificial intelligence does not exist.

And probably never will.

There is room at my table for cultivated meat.

I’m about to go try this fake chicken thing from KFC now.

I’ve had impossible burger. I like it.

There can be a balance of this stuff. Like I’m not opposed to wind or solar energy either.

It’s just idiotic to replace something that works with something that doesn’t work that well.

I’m ready for this. This will be a key to exploring space and colonizing other planets as well.

What I’m not a fan of are these elites who will control it. They need to be fed to the machines.

This group has a problem with killing animals but I’m sure no problem keeping Planned Parenthood open.

I'm sure they don't a problem with killing animals and keeping Planned Parenthood open is the proof. When we consider who is aborted most and what liberals secretly think of them...

What I’m not a fan of is making it look like something else, because then you have to add who knows what artificial chemicals to synthesize the flavor, the consistency, whatever. If we have to eat goop like in the Matrix, then make it look and taste like goop.

What do you want to bet they allow it to be mixed in with actual meat, so you don’t get a say on it through many distribution routes.
