Germany will replace some of its aging Tornado bomber jets with U.S.-made F-35A Lightning II aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, the country’s defense minister said Monday.
Announcing the decision, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said Germany also will upgrade its Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets for electronic warfare — a capability that’s also currently fulfilled by the Tornado jets. The Eurofighter will be replaced beginning in 2040 with the Future Combat Air System, or FCAS, that’s being jointly developed with France and Spain, she said.
Germany’s air force commander, Ingo Gerhartz, said the Russian war in Ukraine made it necessary to choose Lockheed Martin’s F-35s. Previously, the government had considered replacing the Luftwaffe’s Tornados with a mix of different U.S. and European-made aircraft. […]
The German military does not have nuclear weapons of its own, but as part of the system of nuclear deterrence developed during the Cold War it maintained bombers capable of carrying U.S. atomic bombs, some of which are stationed in Germany.

Sure, because it’s not really in a NATO context.
Its not like every time we let them arm up they try to take over Europe or anything. 😏
We will only build 2 types of planes. Fighter-bombers and long range heavy bombers. Those are the only fixed wing aircraft Congress will approve in any quantities. There is no way they will approve a medium bomber. That’s how the F-117 got it’s fighter designation even though it can’t do much in that role. The F-22 would lose much of it’s stealth features and some performance in a bomber role but it had to be sold as a capable bomber to be approved.

My the worm has turned. Germany is increasing its defense budget to 2% of its GDP. Russia is a wakeup call for Europe.
I hope after this done, NATO is desolved as is the UN.
The F-35 is very similarly following the path the F-16 did.
The F-16 was intended to be a second tier multipurpose aircraft to supplement the F-15 which was dedicated to air superiority, the big dog in the fight.
As the F-16 evolved and the world took notice, it became more versatile and attractive than it's design concept ever imagined.
The F-35 is now growing into that niche. The world is evaluating it's capabilities and liking what it has to offer. The big criticism has been price but now as export volumes increase, the price per unit is reduced, again, same as the F-16.
There are critics that will never allow the F-35 it's due credit but there were also critics of the F-15, F-22, B-1B, AWACS and other now proven systems. The critics, notably the likes of patricia schroeder, never met a USAF system they didn't like.

The EU was created as an antithesis to the USA. It’s purely about anti-Americanism. Clinton ceding control of NATO to them has produced the bitter fruits of today.
