A case of pneumonia led one man to “hear God” after tripping on antibiotics in a rare case of antibiomania, a state of psychosis from taking the common remedy.
A recently published case study appearing in the journal BMC Psychiatry reported symptoms of a 50-year-old man with a bacterial infection of the respiratory illness, requiring antibiotics to treat.
However, the man who had never before ingested an antibiotic in his life soon discovered he is one of the few people in the world who experience psychedelic hallucinations thanks to conventional antibiotics. The report described the man as having mood swings, feeling irritable and beginning to believe he was dying and hearing voices that were not there.

I didn’t attribute the voices to God at the time, but I had mold -induced pneumonia at age 12 and I heard voices telling me I was dying

Seems like they were used for “talking books”.
The actual infection itself....fever, cytokines from inflammation etc can cause people to hallucinate.
Certain prescription drugs have definite link to hallucinations...particularly opiates.
Dried banana peels are alleged to do the same thing. 🤡

Be nice to mention what the antibiotic was. Some antibiotics can cause seizures....like penicillins, carbapenems, Cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones...if dose is too high. So possible he had neurological dysfunction. But maybe God was talking to him....
Reminds me of what c.s. lewis wrote in his small treatise, MIRACLES. Where if someone doesn’t believe that ghosts can exist...if they see one, they will say they must have been hallucinating or delirious.
If this is the only time he can hear God, he is in a bad way. Unfortunately there are way too many people in that same bad way.
Let me guess ... Levaquin? That stuff made me hallucinate too. Also gave me insomnia. After two doses, I told my doctor to give me something else. I’ll never take that stuff again.
It doesn’t sound like he ‘insisted’ on anything. He was a victim of a rare reaction to a drug he had never taken before.
IIRC, they were used my grammar school for spoken word recordings. I vaguely recall listening to a Chipmunks album at that speed, to hear what they really sounded like.

I think they meant that he had bacterial pneumonia, or a secondary infection consequent to pneumonia.
