Florida cop grabs female officer by the throat and shoves her into patrol car after she tried to pull him off a suspect

A police sergeant in Florida has been demoted to desk work after he was seen on video grabbing a fellow officer by her throat.

Authorities in Sunrise, Florida shared body camera footage of an incident that took place November 19.

Everyone in the video had their face blurred except for Sergeant Christopher Pullease, 46, a 21-year veteran of the force.

Sunrise police were detaining a suspect who was 'verbally and physically resistive' when Pullease came on the scene and got aggressive, Chief Anthony Rosa said in a statement.

Pullease then got into a verbal altercation with the suspect, who was already sitting inside a police car.

Body camera footage shows Pullease ducking his head inside the car to talk to the suspect while holding a can of pepper spray.

Rosa said that Pullease was 'inappropriate and unprofessional' in the situation and added that he 'unnecessarily elevated the demeanor of the suspect.'

A fellow officer - who has not been identified but has been on the force two and a half years - ran toward Pullease and pulled him by the back of his duty belt.

Video shows Pullease turn around while backpedaling as he was pulled, then momentarily putting his hand at the other officer's throat and pushing her backward until she hits a nearby police car. Pullease then walks away.

According to Rosa, the second officer was following Sunrise police's own policies and procedures for a situation where there's 'imminent fear of engagements escalating' between officers and suspects.

Pullease has been taken off his supervisory duties since the incident. Internal affairs is investigating, with Rosa calling his behavior 'disgusting.'

Go to 2:29 in the video and wait. You will see that the detained person was well inside the rear of the police vehicle.

"Were you also one of those cops who turned a blind eye when a fellow officer broke the law?"

I worked in Corrections, and wouldn't have lasted 25 years if I'd let any officers under my supervision, break department policies. None of them ever did, and none of them were ever charged, or disciplined for it. Too many people like to make judgement calls based on videos, and reporting of the media. The last paragraph of this article states that:

"A WSVN investigation into Pullease said that he had been investigated twice for excessive use of force in his two decades on the job, but had been cleared both times."

Being accused twice in 20 years makes me pretty certain this Sergeant doesn't make a habit of abusing his position. Being accused is one thing. Being found guilty is another. As a female, I was accused of using excessive force by male convicts. I only worked in male prisons. Being accused is part and parcel of the job. Convicts and perps like to play the system. This perp is probably a career criminal like most of them are. If the Sergeant didn't do anything wrong, in the long run, he'll be cleared like the last two times. It should be noted that this incident happened three months ago, and the Sergeant hasn't been charged yet. Obviously, it's not as clear cut as you think it is.

Yeah but it was a female, a young female with just 2 years experience.
She shouldn’t even be there. She should be cleaning the station bathrooms or something.
The suspect was handcuffed and secured in the vehicle and probably deserved to be taunted under the threat of pepper spray. /S!!

I never thought this story was going to expose so many whack jobs.

It’s obvious the arm chair posters never worked in dangerous jobs with women before.

Poor Sergeant suffering from sexual frustration or something?

Start at 2:49 in the video . . . and wait . . .

By 3:00, the female police officer is pulling the Sgt. away from the police vehicle.

By 3:11, the Sgt. is going back to the police vehicle . . . and opens the door.

“I’m a female who worked in uniform for 25 years as an officer, and Sergeant in NY State’s prison system.”

You carry the baggage of the well known corruption of prison guards. So much contraband comes into the prisons, not by magic, by corrupt guards.

Where's the video of the Sergeant actually using pepper spray on the guy in the vehicle? They allege it happened, but where's the video? I'm assuming the Sergeant had a camera on him as well. I see what could be something in the Sergeant's right hand as he's pulled out of the vehicle by the female cop, but where's the video of him actually dispensing the contents of a spray can?

I don’t know what to make of this situation. I suspect the officer was caught by surprise when the other officer grabbed by the belt and started pulling him backwards. I sort of took what he did as a way of saying “what the hell are you doing?“. This is the type of crap that police have to put up with.

They need to test officers for steroid use every few months. There also should be at lest a one year time between when a person is involved in combat operations in the military and when they can become a police officer.

He opens the door. The perp is in the car, and the Sergeant immediately closes the door.

I provided camera info from video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFD5CxfwICI

regarding your concern:

“There is no camera view of the perp inside the car”

I have not yet found any video that shows the Sgt. “using,” “deploying” (as in using), or “dispensing” the contents of the can.

But in some of the video that I referenced, there was enough to see that the Sgt. was holding a can:

2:41 in the video, the Sgt. transfers the can from his left to his right hand

3:01 in the video, the can is still in his right hand

By the looks of him, I would lay odds he doesn’t have a clean record.

Seems like a few posters here have a crush on him.

Yet the public can, go figure.
This is why people call cops pigs and Sargent POS is the problem.

"3:01 in the video, the can is still in his right hand"

I've already said that in one of my comments. However, there is no video actually showing him using the pepper spray on the perp. If the Sergeant had used the spray, the perp would have had to be seen by medical staff. It's standard procedure. You can't get around that, and you don't want to get around it. You want to make sure that there is a record of the condition of the perp once he's received wherever he is being locked up. That way he can't come back and claim he was beaten by the cops who brought him in. And the officer using the spray would likely have to fill out a specific form if it was used. There's no info in the article on that either.

Anytime force had to be used on an inmate, or there was an assault on staff, or an inmate was stabbed, etc., it was called an Unusual Incident, and it had to be reported to Albany within an hour of its happening. In New York State Corrections, whenever an inmate was transferred into a new facility, he was made to strip, and pictures taken. The medical staff also had to see him. If he was involved in a fight, same procedure. If he was admitted to the special housing unit, a strip search was conducted by the SHU officers before he was placed in his cell. Then medical staff had to come to see him. They would make the inmate strip, and check his body all over, to make sure he didn't have any physical injuries on him.

Chemical agents were used rarely, but if they were required, there was a specially trained CERT team that did the extraction from the cell, and the inmate would have to be seen by medical staff immediately afterwards, to ensure that he had no adverse reactions to whatever chemical agent had been used.

You wrote “I see what could be something in the Sergeant’s right hand”

I simply provided a couple points from the aforementioned video, so that you would have more certainty.

Thanks for the details, re standard procedure of care.
