Parents claim they have the right to shape their kids’ school curriculum. They don’t.
Washington Post ^ | October 21, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. EDT | Jack Schneider and Jennifer Berkshire

In their search for issues that will deliver Congress in 2022, conservatives have begun to circle around the cause of “parents’ rights.” In Indiana, Republican Attorney General Todd Rokita recently introduced a Parents Bill of Rights, which asserts that “education policy and curriculum should accurately reflect the values of Indiana families.” In Florida, the legislature passed an even more comprehensive bill, assuring that the state and its public schools cannot infringe on the “fundamental rights” of parents. A growing number of states are allowing parents to sue districts that teach banned concepts. And in Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin has made parents’ rights a centerpiece of his campaign for governor, staging “parents matter” rallies and declaring, “I believe parents should be in charge of their kids’ education.”

Given this frenzy, one might reasonably conclude that radicals are out to curtail the established rights that Americans have over the educational sphere. Yet what’s actually radical here is the assertion of parental powers that have never previously existed.

This is not to say that parents should have no influence over how their children are taught. But common law and case law in the United States have long supported the idea that education should prepare young people to think for themselves, even if that runs counter to the wishes of parents.

In the words of legal scholar Jeff Shulman, “This effort may well divide child from parent, not because socialist educators want to indoctrinate children, but because learning to think for oneself is what children do.” …

The cornerstone of public education is “in loco parentis.”

In the minds of the post, the children belong to the government and their parents are only the stand-ins.

I often saw this sort of stupidity among my colleagues at a major university. These authors lack the capacity to understand that parents also have a right and obligation to teach their children things that run counter to the ideas of their teachers.

That “teach them to think for themselves” is newly-minted BS. It’s never been a statutory goal of American education to segregate children from their parents’ values to see if they come up with opposing values. Absolute BS. That said I agree I’m not aware of any state where parents have a statutory right to be heard on curriculum content. What parents to have a right to do is to vote out these rat bastard school boards and replace them with ones that will follow the will of their constituents.

Its currently run by certifiable lunatics.

The Federal Dept. of Education. Yet another disaster by Jimmuh Cahter.

Parents should never have surrendered local control over the schools their children learn in. Never. Parents are paying for the product and consuming the product. Parents are the ones who have to clean up the mess when their unemployed 24 year old is still living in the basement.

Government is an evil necessity that should be cut to the quick. It is as though the Founders taught us nothing.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I don't consider that Leftist indoctrination, which is what passes for education these days, prepares young people to think for themselves. Far from thinking for themselves, the Leftist indoctrination produces 'sheeple' ... as we are currently witnessing .... jumping off various political/social "cliffs" in suicidal droves.

Government schooling is fundamentally unconstitutional.

Government schooling violates:

Free Speech
Free Press
Establishment of Religion
Free expression of Religion
Free assembly

Government are, were, and always will be a First Amendment and Human Rights abomination!

No school ever was, is, or will be religiously, culturally, or political neutral. Such a state of philosophic neutrality can not exist in the mind of any sentient human!

I was hoping President Trump would disband the federal Dept. of Education. He disappointed on that issue.

Parents were teaching their kids long before the government got involved in public schools - “we can do things better”

Re: Private schooling

Nearly every teacher in this nation was trained by godless Marxists in Marxist-run colleges and universities. It is true for both private and government schooling.

Scary!

I tend to agree with the writers here. The parents DO NOT pay for the education of their kids, the government does. And since the government is paying for the product, the public schools, it is THE GOVERNMENT that gets to set the rules.

And if you’re one of those deluded people who still think that parents are paying for the schools, try not paying and you’ll see just who is running things.
