A California math teacher is under fire after she was filmed donning a feather headdress and doing a bizarre 'Native American' dance for her students.
Footage of John W North High School math teacher Candice Reed donning feathered headgear while chanting 'SOH CAH TOA' -a mnemonic for remembering the definitions of the trigonometric functions sine, cosine, and tangent- has gone viral.
The video was posted to Facebook on Wednesday by Shadae Johnson, a member of the Urban Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council Member in Vancouver.
Johnson said the footage was filmed on Tuesday by a Native American student in Reed's math class.
According to Johnson, the student started recording after several minute's of Reed 'war hooping and tomahawk chopping' because he 'felt that violence was being committed against him and he had the right to record.'
It appears that Reed was using the dance to teach the students the trigonometric functions, which help solve almost any problem related to finding either a side length or angle measure of a right triangle.
Johnson attached footage of Reed doing the 'tomahawk chop' while chanting the math mnemonic in the front of the classroom.
At one point Reed just screeches it while jumping up and down while waving her arms and then dramatically runs out of breath and rests her head on a wall.

Kids are math deficient these days anyway, so God forbid we make Math fun for one day.
I remember 2 math teachers, one was a robot like cyborg who could draw perfect, and I mean perfect circles of any size freehand, it never got old watching that.
the other was a geometry teacher who told stories about riding the rails and announced on the first day of class that we could drop our lowest test grade or homework grade. A group of friends and I reserved our right to party and did no homework, but still got A grades.
I remember SOH-CAH-TOA from my math classes over fifty years ago.
Someone teaching like this understands that best teaching happens with performance art. I hope that a private school hires her. I still remember special teachers who were artists. Miss Dawson , 9th grade English teacher gave me a lifelong love of Shakespeare.
Yep. Me too. I bet you even sat Indian style and survived.
Sine equals Opposite over Hypotenuse, i remember the drlll.
Sounds pretty creative to me.
Creativity is not allowed in bureaucracies.
The kid who took the video is (or should) now be chanting:
OWA...TANA...SIAM...!
Too crazy. It used to be fun:
I used to add some drama in my math classes if I could find a way to do it. I did teach trig once but do not recall teaching SOH CAH TOA but I do see the benefit. S= sine, O - opposite side, and H = hypotenuse. It does sound like an Indian phrase. I am part Canadian Indian and I don’t mind this at all. I believe the student will have many more problems than this one if he/she goes through life with this chip on the shoulder.
I too believe this teacher should find work at a school that respects good teaching.
School, then reinforced in engineering classes.
Sorry, folks, I think she looked like an idiot.
Heck, just get them adept at basic arithmetic. All they need when the computer goes down at the JacknBox.
Trigonometry and Geometry have been used for decades to filter out those incapable of higher mental realms of learning in the hard sciences.
She has been teaching the same thing since 2012.
Sine = Opposite over Hypotenuse
Cosine = Adjacent over Hypotenuse
Tangent = Opposite over Adjacent.
What's next, learning the music scale?

“ the student started recording after several minute’s of Reed ‘war hooping and tomahawk chopping’ because he ‘felt that violence was being committed against him and he had the right to record.”
Oh really. He felt violence was committed against him? Over that ? Let’s at least be honest. Smh
A sine of the times.

OMG such Violent Resistor color codes, probably no longer taught in the navy like this.
White leftists pretend to be offended by this stuff.
Real Indians do not care.
Funny, I never heard that before, but it only took me a couple seconds to figure it out. I took trig about 55 years ago, but used it extensively in engineering.
We were doing some drainage excavating on my property a couple weeks ago and needed the hypotenuse of an isosceles right triangle. I still immediately remembered 1-1-sqrt2 or 1.414. It’s like riding a bike.
When all that goes, I know I’ll be on the Gibberish Joe path.
I knew a guy who wrote a song to remember the names of all the five and six carbon monosaccharides, and the chirality of their carbon atoms. The notes of the chords in the song reflected the orientation of the hydroxyl groups. The chords were played as the names were sung. It was a terrible song.
