EVERETT, Wash — An Everett neighborhood is confused at the city’s priorities after a 7-year-old girl’s lemonade stand was shut down in Rucker Hill Park while complaints over a nearby homeless encampment have gone unaddressed.
Every summer, Elsa LaMaine sets up her lemonade stand at Everett’s Rucker Hill Park.
“It’s so much fun!” Elsa said. She sold drinks, treats and flowers at her stand until one day her business was shut down due to a complaint.
“There was a wicked witch who called the ranger,” Elsa said.
A park ranger showed up last Saturday and told Elsa and her grandmother, Cherie LaMaine, to close up shop. According to the pair, they were told the city doesn't allow people to peddle products on public property.
"I was like, are you gonna shut it down?" queried the youngster.
"The ranger seemed really chagrinned," Cherie LaMaine said. "He was very nice about it. He even took a picture with us, but he told her she had to move immediately.
The situation angered neighbors who said they were surprised the city would take the time to shut down a lemonade stand while a nearby homeless encampment continues to cause problems.
Neighbors reported calling the police several times over the encampment at Rucker Hill Park with few results.
In the middle of KING 5’s interview with Cherie LaMaine and Elsa, a naked man walked out of the woods and into the park.
LaMaine reported the incident to 911. "We have homeless people coming through here all the time," she told the operator, "but this is really bad. He's totally naked."
"We've had people coming through here swinging weapons," LaMaine said. "Something's very wrong with this picture."

The homeless problem is as bad as it is in Seattle from what I have heard
Apparently a bad Karen problem too
Probably due to the light shining on the city cockroaches they will scurry away and the little girl will get to sell flowers and lemon-aid again.

Punish the innocent, reward the guilty.
It’s the Democrat way.
“’We have homeless people coming through here all the time,’ she told the operator, ‘but this is really bad. He’s totally naked.
‘We’ve had people coming through here swinging weapons,’ LaMaine said.”
Well, one weapon, anyway...
If people want to live in Democrat controlled cities, they need to be prepared to share the streets, and before long, their homes, with the homeless. We’ll see how far the liberals’ compassion goes then.
The City knew that 7 y/o Elsa and her Grandma would not spring into a Policeman’s face like some Jack in the Box with a knife. The City is not so sure how any Homeless campers will react.
Typical of governments everywhere. Do nothing about the problems you can’t fix. Bully the people you can.
Anarcho-tyranny is the term you’re looking for. This is a classic example.

They screwed Mobile, AL outta jobs years ago...eff’em.
What a Barney!
Well, we need to crack down on these kids selling lemonade. Does she have her business license and all permits in order? Is she up to date on her workman’s comp policies? Has she been paying her payroll taxes? What about her liability insurance policy, what is the status of that?
sarcasm, I hope.....
Bully the weak and innocent. Ignore the real threats.
It’s the American way in 2021.
On point !
Cute kid, but at seven it’s a stretch to say she sells lemonade in the park every summer. The place is probably dangerous. Some of those folks go sideways without notice or apparent provocation.
O. Henry would be proud of the irony =>
“Seven-year-old Elsa LaMaine has been operating her lemonade stand at the public park every summer. She sells drinks and treats and gives half of the proceeds to the local homeless shelter.”
.
I am sure it is something that she did last year when she was visiting her grandmother during the summer, and something they planned to do every year.
Most 7 year olds and Grandmothers are nice people and it sounds like the Gospel mission people are too.
Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin posted a response on Facebook that said the lemonade stand shut down “should not have happened” and that her office, “will work to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future.” Funny thing is, she actually bought some lemonade at the stand the day it was shut down.

Besides, I bet her workforce does not meet diversity standards
As succinct & to the point as it could possibly be!
