) — Ancient Judeans ate non-kosher fish at a time when it was thought to have been prohibited in the Bible, according to a new study.
Researchers analyzed ancient fish bones from 30 archeological sites in areas that are now part of Israel and Egypt, dating from the Late Bronze Age (1550-1130 B.C.) to the end of the Byzantine period in 640 A.D.
The main principles of Jewish dietary law are laid down in the Chumash, or written Torah -- thought by many scholars to have been compiled during the Persian era (539-332 B.C.) and based on long-held traditions.
Observant Jews still comply with kosher requirements as laid out in the book -- including the requirement that any fish consumed must have fins and easily detached scales.
After analyzing fish bones at many Judean sites dating to the Iron Age (1130-586 B.C.) -- including at the Judean capital city of Jerusalem -- researchers found a significant proportion of non-kosher fish remains, such as catfish and shark

Bones reveal a blessing ?
Is the Impossible Burger kosher?
Required: Fish with fins and easily detachable scales”
Maybe such fish were not plentiful in that geographic area during that era.
When life gives you lemons....
Also, it only says that they should have fins and scales ... the ease or difficulty of removing the scales is not actually a thing in either Leviticus or Deuteronomy.
It is also possible, indeed probable, that ancients didn’t recognize that shark hide is composed of what amounts to teeth. That means the relevant question is if they could have viewed these as extremely fine scales. The texture is very different than, say, the skin of a dolphin which would definitely be recognized as not being scale based.

Or maybe CNN is fibbing as usual.

There is also the major detail that many people in Judua were not Jews. I don’t see how this is news.
Pre “If you teach a man how to fish” but logical. If you are hungry and certain types of foods were available, as we say in Yiddish, “Gey Essen” (go eat). Being dead is not the way to worship God.
Tuna have scales.
And perhaps as a result of eating these and suffering consequences, the prohibition was codified. Just as likely as trichinosis leading to the ban on pork.
The Judeans had a habit of not following Biblical laws of any type.
Non-Kosher seafood consists of recently discovered species of fish? ...Whodathunkit!
Whoever wrote this article apparently isn’t a fisherman because he never heard of something called “bait.” I don’t eat earthworms or crickets but I do use them as bait. And I have baited many a trot line with fish I wouldn’t want to eat, like shad.
Piles of bones don’t prove that they ate them, only that they caught and dressed them.
Maybe they were running a catfish restaurant that only served the goyim. Come too think of it, I’ve never seen a single diner at Uncle Bud’s wearing a yarmulke.
Yep. If they can read, CNN might benefit from reading the Bible. I suppose they might be shocked at how many times people in Israel worshipped idols, too. Before they were punished, that is.
