Muddy roads, rusted cars, makeshift shelters and piles of garbage: The desolate images at the beginning of German director Milo Rau’s new film, The New Gospel, show how farm workers live near the southern Italian city of Matera.
Most of them are African refugees. They have no residence permit and work for hours under the scorching sun or in the freezing cold for a pittance in the tomato fields and orange plantations. They are hired and supervised by Italian foremen, the “caporali.” The mafia controls the agricultural economy in the Matera region; there is no way around their contact men. […]
The roles of Jesus of Nazareth, the 12 Apostles, the Pharisees and Romans were played by activists, field workers, former prostitutes, farmers, as well as actors and actresses from the older renditions of the story of Jesus: Maia Morgenstern, who played Mary in Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, and the recently deceased Enrique Irazoqui, who starred as Jesus in Pasolini’s The Gospel According to Matthew.
The New Gospel is marked by the charisma and authenticity of its actors. Yvan Sagnet plays Jesus of Nazareth, and he also plays himself: a social activist who wants to put an end to the workers’ intolerable living conditions in the tomato fields. For years, Sagnet, who was awarded the Italian order of merit “Ordine al Merito della Repubblica” and founded the international NoCap network, has campaigned against agricultural labor exploitation and for fair-trade products produced entirely without the structures of the local mafia. …

Jesus was a Jew. He was not a Norwegian and he was not an African.
“Most of them are African refugees”
They aren’t “refugees” from anything but themselves.
“They have no residence permit and work for hours under the scorching sun or in the freezing cold for a pittance”
Repatriate them. Now.
They will be much better off in their nations of origin.
Sounds like a dud. Pass.
Question: Was Jesus white, or was He black? Or was He something in between?
Answer: It doesn’t matter in the least. It would be like asking if Jesus was tall or short.
So if some group wants to represent Jesus as a short, black man fine with me. Just keep the representation strictly true to the Gospels. No modern twists. No SJW stuff.
Just my two cents.
Seems to intentionally forget or misinform the fact that Joseph and Mary were required to go to Bethlehem for the census.
They didn’t go there for the work or to undercut jobs from actual citizens.
If you want to be “strictly true to the Gospels”, then Jesus can be a Jew and no other.
What, exactly am I supposed to do about what happened over 2000 years ago and with Muzzies who weren’t there? They came 700 or more years later?
> If you want to be “strictly true to the Gospels”, then Jesus can be a Jew and no other. <
Oh, yes. Absolutely. And an Orthodox Jew at that. I should have made that clearer in my previous post. So if some play company wants to represent Jesus as a short, black Jewish man I’d have no objections.
But as a short, black Hindu man? No.
As a short, black Jewish woman? Again, no.
Etc.
Being a Jew is not necessarily related to Judaism. There is a race of people called the tribe of Judah, from which King David and his descendants came; Jesus of Nazareth was born of that line.
Funny, isn’t it?
Those are the indigenous people of Europe.
Don’t hear the screamers getting upset about their treatment at the hands of the invaders.
> There is a race of people called the tribe of Judah, from which King David and his descendants came; Jesus of Nazareth was born of that line. <
Yes. Agreed. But what did those folks look like in the time of Jesus? Jews at that time were careful to marry only other Jews (Deut. 7:3). So I’m guessing there wasn’t a whole lot of ethnic diversity.
But there had to some diversity (I guess). We just don’t know. So I’m OK with a black actor playing Jesus. Just do it right.
Wait until their women are raped and their houses burned down because those gimmiegrants are upset over muzzie something or other.
They didn’t look like Hamites.
Nope!
The joke is on those fools!
They’ll be apologizing for not providing the gasoline and matches for the burned down home.
