If youve spent time on the Trump-supporting parts of social media, youve probably come across a strange meme in the past couple of years. MAGA-loving Twitter is constantly offering people free helicopter rides. But what does it mean?
The offer of free helicopter rides is a reference to the practice of killing people by dropping them from helicopters, made most famous by Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s. Sometimes Pinochets death flights were conducted over the ocean, but they were also done over rivers and sometimes the land. Hundreds of political dissidents are still unaccounted for from the Pinochet era, but a conservative government estimate from 2001 puts the number of people killed in Chile by being thrown from helicopters at 120.
Despite its disgusting connotations, free helicopter rides has become quite a meme online for people who support President Trump and his neo-fascist policies. There are entire Facebook pages devoted to Pinochets Free Helicopter Rides, and even websites that sell t-shirts and other gear with the phrase.

And the hysteria is by people who worship Che Guevera, murderer of teenaged girls and a man who abandoned his wife and children for the sake of revolution.
I see it once in a while. It is common among those who use the triggered girl meme, triggly puff and a number of others.
“Take him to the helicopter...”
The Gods Must be Crazy
Free helicopter rides ... such a quaint idea ... new thinkers are offering free rides aboard a C-5 Galaxy ... plenty of seat belt-less ‘seating’ - amazing views out of the open cargo door while in a steep climb ...
Rumor has it that Russia will (for the right price) supply a Antonov An-225 Mriya more ‘seating’ still!
Benito Mussolini had Libyan rebels thrown out of helicopters, too. He probably wanted to add some bright colors to the desert.
Do you have to actually own a helicopter or have access to one to use that meme?
Asking for a friend.
Uh, I think there were no helicopters in Mussolini's Italy. It's a colorful anecdote though. :^)
I’ll check. Perhaps airplanes were used.
It's possible, there was a 1930s German design that worked, but was never produced in quantity, and was destroyed apparently to keep it out of Russia's hands. The Sikorsky (naturalized American, born in Kiev in the Ukraine) design wasn't manufactured until 1942, and choppers were never used widely in militaries until the Korean War, AFAIK.
I don’t get it.
The left has a chance to paint us as jack-booted thugs on this.
What is to celebrate?
I don’t know if it’s a good idea for our FRiends to be joking about ‘free helicopter rides’. Yeah, I laughed watching ‘The Gods Must be Crazy’. The man was not killed.
But this is exactly what the left is looking for.
The Left calls us every name in the book already even when we bend over backwards to be nice to them, now up to and including “rapist” and “white supremacist”. Hell, they invent a new political nonsense term every year just to slander us with it.
It’s time to update your political strategy book, and tear out the pages that say “the Left might paint us as...”
They’ll do that anyway whether it’s true or not.
EVERYONE!
Their slanders normally backfire against us.
But mark my words — when they nail you with the truth, that accusations are amplifed a THOUSAND fold!
We beat them on the cheap because we stand for truth.
Don’t give them ammo.
But it’s not the truth, it’s a joke. And when they take it literally it makes them look even worse for being humorless.
This thing you’ve got going on in your head where you care what the Left, in its perpetual orgy of bad faith, will say about us... put a stop to it. They will say anything, and no one believes them any longer, so it doesn’t matter what they say.
They are people who would rape hoax a Supreme Court nominee. They have no credibility. Stop treating them as if they do.
Even Trump watches what he says to a degree. When Trump uses the ‘N’ word and gets away with it, then I’ll lighten up more.
Making threats is against forum rules BTW.
It might be a joke, but there are plenty of other ways to laugh.
It is INCREDIBLY important that we expose them for the terrorists they are, and humor like this is counter-productive.
