I used to run around with Eddie Shaver when I lived in Waco in the early 90’s. Ed was Billy Joe’s kid, he writes a lot of songs. Billy Joe knows Willie from way back. So that’s as close as I’ve ever been to Willie.
No, he’s dead. Just walkin’ around. But really dead.

When it is true, I’ll surely miss the old codger.
Eddy Shaver was one of the best guitar players who ever lived. Dickie Betts gave Eddy his guitar saying “You can play it better than I can.”. I knew Eddy casually. Met him just a few years before he died.
I knew Billy Joe. The last time I saw him it had been awhile and I don’t think he remembered me. It’s sad that not a lot of people know about him. He put out a song a few years ago called “It’s Hard to Be An Outlaw When You’re Not Wanted Anymore.”. That about says it.
Hung out with Willie for a short time once on a movie set. What you see is what you get. Very humble man.
On the road again...
I hadn’t heard anything about this until I saw this thread but I wondered yesterday how time Willie’s got left.
He’s booked solid through mid-November with concerts. Looks like he’s going strong.
Mike Judge did an episode of Tales From The Tour Bus about Billy Joe Shaver. And Billy Joe Shaver appears in another episode of the program.
