'Cheap sex' is making men give up on marriage
NY Post ^ | September 2, 2017 | Larry Getlan

Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.

The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.

Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.

Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.

The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).

In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.

Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

There simply is no way to get an accurate and detailed picture across in a forum such as this...

A lot of posters here need to grasp this concept before judging the words of other posters.

It frustrates me sometimes when women and animal lovers, based on a few of my posts, accuse me of being some sort of monster. I have a very large circle of friends and family that would strongly disagree.

But then, they are basing their opinion on more than a few posts on a single topic. ;-)

No matter how we tried to help her make the right decisions, grandmother would both enable her and fight with her as though she was a peer. It is a terrible situation being passed down from generation to generation.

Sadly, very, very true. I know from personal experience of what you speak and it's one of the reasons my ex wife is now my EX wife. Generational problems such as drug use, physical abuse, sexual abuse (of which my ex wife suffered from) and the horrific damage they do from one generation to the next is really staggering. It's not just the kids either, it affects grandchildren, great grandchildren etc..

My own two sons know my ex wife isn't quite right in the head, they don't know why yet. She has almost no relationship with our oldest son. He was home from college for the summer and lives with me. She saw him for a whopping five hours all summer. I can see the hurt in his eyes when he comes back from seeing her yet he goes to see her because that's his mom. He knows when he needs help he cannot call her -- he calls me.

Same with the youngest son who also just entered college.

As angry as I am (still....) at my ex for how she destroyed our family literally on a whim of hers, it's sad to see what she's become and it breaks my heart to see the impact on my two sons. Some people say "well, they're adults - they understand" but no they don't. They see a dad who did everything he could to hold it together while mom was hell bent on ripping things apart.

One day they'll know the truth, I suppose when I think they're ready to hear it (or they ask...) and hopefully that breaks the chain.

Young men see that if a marriage doesn’t work out, the cast-off woman gets a house and an income at his expense. A shackup or one night/weekend stand is cheaper!

The value of a life partner is unrecognized without a God-fearing and loving background.

I have been thinking it, but it is time I just plain said it. You are right.

What she has been doing throughout this thread is projecting. But I like women. I just think it’s cute. :)

Yeah, these guys can’t handle an American woman—...

It’s not the women that are the problem. It is when they sick divorce court and the government on you. THAT is the issue.

My divorce 20 years ago was incredibly bitter. In fact, my wife today still bristles a bit when I say I am not really angry with my ex. She was just a dumb girl doing a dumb thing - that damaged her immensely and did damage to my girls. My anger is at the government that enabled her to destroy herself and my family. And they have guns.

Many women believe that they can spend a decade or more acting like trollops with bad boys from bars and then, decrepit and infertile, be treated as pure prizes worth winning by rich and respectable men.

Naturally, men don’t view those women that way at all, and can afford to pursue women who have not ruined themselves instead.

Very true. I see this very thing all the time, and these gals wonder why they end up as single, pissed off cat women who wonder why "Mr Right" doesn't want to wife up the town bicycle.

To them, I say:

As someone already posted, men “handle” wild animals. Men don’t want to come home and have to “handle” his wife. God created Eve to be a helpmate to Adam. Not so Adam could man up and handle her. Most men would be better off single than with an obstinate and strong willed wife who does not submit to his authority. Fact.

Yep. This is a post my wife would strongly agree with as well. Maybe that is why we’re coming up on 20 years of marital bliss. Meanwhile, my first wife had different expectations. It still went 20 years before she just needed to be alone. But I literally could not please her, no matter what I did. No matter what books I read, no matter what seminars I attended. Eventually, all that reading and seminars did teach me quite a bit - the problem was her. But she set me free so I can’t complain. :-)

Nobody’s perfect. It’s why Christ died for ALL of us.

Amen to that. I had an idyllic childhood and so did my brother and sisters. We lived on 40 acres and had horses, cows, dogs, cats, pigs and other farm animals to play with and nurture. This is not to mention having tractors, motorcycles, mini-bikes, bicycles, sleds, tree houses and all sorts of other stuff to play with. We were not actually rich but we never had to worry about where the next meal was coming from. My parents loved us and supported us in nearly everything that we wanted to do. My grandparents lived next door so we had a great relationship with them as well and we all want on big family camp outs together.

Yet these days my brother and sisters blame my parents for all sorts of stuff. My parents have literally raised some of their grandkids and they get no thanks or appreciation for that either. No one in our family has got any real problems. My brother is an airline pilot and makes a fortune. Both my sisters are in comfortable situations as well. But they do not go to church; they do not appear to have a relationship with God and they are always unhappy about something. When they are unhappy they blame my parents who are in their 80s and are still amazing people. It is nonsensical to say the least, but disturbingly common.

Our youngest daughter has had some problems. She has hurt people including her kids and her ex-husbands. But she keeps trying to do better. And I am feeling sorry that I aired her problems on this forum. My mom who is on facebook with her says she keeps posting stuff lately about her new job, our grandkids coming to visit her, going to church, baking pies, and the joy she is sharing with our new son-in-law. So I am hopeful that she is on the right track and will stick with it this time. She is by far the most intelligent of our children and I believe that she does have a good heart.

I’d rather not see my fellow men be divorce raped. As long as that continues, foreign brides coming to America will too.

This is why Seattle had to put metal detectors in their divorce courts. There was a middle aged Boeing engineer that had never married that found himself a mail order Asian bride. She was with him a short time, got pregnant, and then wanted a divorce. They were taking him to the cleaners finantially so, one day, he shows up in the courtroom with a .45 caliber pistol and shoots his wife and her female attorney dead and sets the gun down.

Some would call it self defense. But he ain’t getting out.

>>>Young men see that if a marriage doesn’t work out, the cast-off woman gets a house and an income at his expense. A shackup or one night/weekend stand is cheaper!<<<

I’m the guy miss m called can idiot for my post in 425. Men are cautious about being married. Some guys are tradcon and will marry easily. For those that are not, the women need to be exceptional when a man runs the risk/reward thing through his brain. There are less blue pill (traditional conservative) men nowadays. Men being financially ruined is such a common occurrence that young men instinctively know marriage is dangerous.

In this day and age where every man under the age of 40 was force fed women are equal to men in public schools, there is simply no good rationale for a woman to win cash and prizes at the expense of the ex husband. Men and women are equal some of the time, and old fashioned values must be preserved when it advantages a woman?

It’s not a mystery why men are wary of marriage. It’s common sense.

Funny how I personally know of 3 marriages where the husbands cheated/found younger women, let the first family, started new families and were far better off financially.

They hid money before they left, hired lawyers and screwed the first wife and favored the children from the second family.

The husband isn't always the loser, but he is usually the one who is the cheater.

“...what year was the “tipping point” for this? ...1968...Reason: the Pill.”

I agree, but it seems to me that the decline accelerated when the left & the media defended Clinton claiming: “he was only lying about sex”, along with “@ral sex isn’t REAL sex.”

And now after 8 years of BO normalizing deviancy, I fear we are in a death spiral. Time will tell...

Unless the guy turns gay, there’s a woman committing adultery with him. I’m just trying to work out the math in my head to say one sex is worse than the other when it comes to infidelity. Seems a 1 to 1 ratio the way I’m looking at it.

That’s my comment in 425. If your friend is so awesome why isn’t she married or in a LTR? Could it be that your friend may be responsible for her own singleness? I see tons of 35 year old women who are married or dating already. Just saying. Have a nice day miss m.

This^^

My wife and I are both 63, have been married almost 20 years, and are closer than ever. It just gets better and better. We have something we call a “love rush”. It’s where you look at or listen to your spouse and just start tearing up because you are so thankful that they are in your life.

I never experienced that before I met her and did not even know you could feel that strongly towards another person.
