'Cheap sex' is making men give up on marriage
NY Post ^ | September 2, 2017 | Larry Getlan

Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.

The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.

Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.

Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.

The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).

In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.

Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

Happy Labor Day to you both-it is sunny and 89 here-but our 1st cool spell is due early Wed-nights into the mid 50’s-looking forward to it...

I’ll say it again-as a case manager, I’d recommend therapy for guys who have become so bitter and hating-I don’t see what is bad about plain and honest profanity, having my man appreciate me as an equal partner, doing any job I’m able to and like-but I’m used to the macho cowboys who don’t have their masculinity threatened by any of that.

Maybe those guys will find a woman willing to stay quiet unless spoken to, wear whatever her lord and master gives her, and allow herself to be chastised and disciplined physically if he decides she’s been a bad girl-I’ve heard there are some cults and polygamous groups that preach that male superiority stuff in Utah-and there is at least one outside Waco here in Texas, too...

Thanks miss marmle-we isolated ourselves out here in a remote place by the river for a first weekend-for the purpose of dredging up old stuff, sharing secrets and working out terms for permanence-so we really have no excuse to screw up-there’s been very little friction thus far.

Tomorrow is my B’day-like any other female, I can hardly wait to see what he does-when we were young he wasn’t very polished at the gift and surprise thing-it will be interesting to see if he has mastered that over the years...

Take a break. Read a book. Go fishing or for a walk. Listen to some classical music.

There’s still time.

Mood disorder with bipolar manic features.

I assume that you are a mental health professional because that is very close to what our daughter has been diagnosed with. She has been on prescribed psychotropic medication for it, but it has not been very helpful for more than the short term..

Not long before her last divorce she called her mother and said that she just wasn't happy and she needed to change her situation. My wife told her that she was someone who never stayed happy for very long and that divorcing her very supportive husband and leaving her kids was not the solution. She of course did what she felt compelled to do anyway. We just didn't hear about it until after it was all over.

But back to my original reaction after reading the article. Our youngest daughter has gained and lost a lot of weight at different time periods. She loses a lot of weight when she is looking for a new man and makes herself much more attractive. After she catches one and gets married again she starts becoming unhappy and gaining weight. But she has not seemed to have any difficulty finding a new husband. So to me it seems like women are still in control of the marriage game not men as the article postulates.

Young men for the most part have no idea what they are doing or what they want when it comes to marriage. When they meet a woman such as our youngest she can play them like a fiddle. We love her but she can be very manipulative and knows how to get what she wants. And young men do not do anything to check out her past as long as she is making them happy in the present. I have seen this happen several times so it creates a very awkward situation when we meet them for the first time.

>>>Yeah, these guys can’t handle an American woman—lessee them take on Russian mafia. But not right away. Maybe a few weeks after the honeymoon. These dainty gals have lots of brothers.<<<<

As someone already posted, men “handle” wild animals. Men don’t want to come home and have to “handle” his wife. God created Eve to be a helpmate to Adam. Not so Adam could man up and handle her. Most men would be better off single than with an obstinate and strong willed wife who does not submit to his authority. Fact.

And if a man can find a helpmate abroad, what’s your problem with it?

I have absolutely no problem with it. I’d rather you go live in Ukraine, however, and not bring shady foreigners into the US. I’ve known people who adopted from former Communist countries. Each time, a disaster.

I’d rather not see my fellow men be divorce raped. As long as that continues, foreign brides coming to America will too.

Best of luck with your new life. Please don’t bring your bride back to USA or don’t let her be Americanized if you do.

I am dead serious. Foreign women put American women to shame. And here's the ironic part: There are literally thousands of Chinese women seeking marriage to Western men. You would think that with the abortion balance, they would be able to find men in their own country.

Sorry, but I have given up on American women. Chinese or Ukrainian women for me (Cue my image on a Communist poster lol)

How do American men connect with Ukrainian women?

Does it necessitate traveling there?

They are a puzzle. But once you get in their good graces, they will love you forever. That's why I'm leaning towards more Asian women than Ukrainian women.

I’ve got an MBA and work as a lead software engineer. Hardly a moron.

I wasn’t speaking or didn’t mean to speak directly as if I were judging your friend I’m sure she’s probably very attractive or you wouldn’t even be confused as to why she can’t find a good man. I was trying to say Men who judge her for what she does, are the idiots. They are your basic Beta-Bitches. Kind of like Cucked GOPe pseudo-Men.

As a matter of fact since I’m one-part very high IQ and the other part jock-thinking Chad... One of my favorite lines when arguing with some leftist lawyer on a forum is to warn them.... You can’t even Bench Press my IQ faggot. So if that’s your idea of a coherent argument or debate you’d better regroup and realize who you are dealing with.

Toxic Masculine Male

You know, Papa, I’ve always thought you were a real jerk. Now you’ve proved it.

Thanks! I appreciate the compliment.

Resorting to ad hominem means you have no rational response, because deep down you know I'm speaking a truth you cannot face, so you need to lash out in anger.

Expanding on my original point a bit:

It used to be that new cars were more affordable. Then government regulations increased the price of cars. Now people see used cars with an inflation-adjusted asking price comparable to what new cars cost a generation ago. Rather than saddling themselves with a used, high-mileage model with unknown issues and no warranty, more men say "to hell with it, I'm going to just use Uber".

Back when people married earlier, a man was more likely to be able to acquire a young wife who would have more incentives to keep the marriage going. The current divorce environment means that the man's price of getting married (when the risk and cost of divorce is factored in) has gone up. Meanwhile, more women spend their prime attractive years chasing after charming desirable men who are only willing to show interest in them if they offer no-strings sex, and then the women have the expectation that some shlub will marry them after they are older and much less able to attract interest from the desirable men.

It used to be that the moral culture kept a lid on this. That is no longer the case.

Pathetic to think that I somehow, unconsciencesly, agree with you on the subject of women’s suffrage! I know more about it sleeping than you’ll ever know awake.

That's cool. You have my permission to keep telling yourself that.

But in your heart, you know I'm right.

Also, I never mentioned women's suffrage. I've been talking about current divorce laws and rulings, which make marriage in the 21st Century increasingly unattractive to men. (BTW, before you snark, I've been married for over 30 years).
