R.I.P. Christopher Hitchens
December 15, 2011 11:51 P.M. By Daniel Foster Vanity Fair reports that Christopher Hitchens has passed away. Often frustrating, usually provocative, always brilliant. He added to the culture, and the conversation.
Im sure I join many in hoping he is in for a glorious, glorious surprise.

Believers go to Heaven. Nonbelievers go to Hell. The Dilemma: Heaven for the climate. Hell for the company.

Wow.
Heartfelt thanks for that encouragement. My entire (living) family are atheists and I pray for them constantly. Sometimes it’s tempting to just give up.

I wouldn’t be surprised. He was a thinker. He may not have always come to the right conclusions, but I think he at the very least tried to come down on the right side. That’s more than you can say about 99% of the media players these days.

Honestly, I can’t imagine how anyone looks at the world, nature, and refuses to believe in its Creator. In the same way atheists claim not to believe in God, I don’t believe in atheism. It’s just inconceivable to me, and at some level I think those who call themselves atheists are looking for God, just not finding Him in a material or intellectual way that their minds can accept.
I just don’t see it as my place to judge Hitchins or anyone else. Some we think were pillars of virtue may have been greater sinners in His eyes and judgment. It does tickle me to think that God might think the professed atheism of a Hitchens is less sinful than those who call themselves Christians thinking it’s their place to take on HIS role of judgment. We don’t know. A marvelous mystery of life, and the afterlife.

Either you believe in God’s punishment or you don’t.
To: TheWriterTX
That is an excellent response. Too often people get caught up talking about the mercy of God and forget the holiness - justice - of God.

Glorius, glorius surprise! As in shoveling coal in Hell?
Keepin' it classy I see.
I say, 'Rest in Peace' Christopher Hitchens, I pray that he will discover that Almighty God is even more merciful than anyone dares to hope.

Lord, he was as imperfect as all of us. Show him Your mercy and invite him into the Kingdom he so long denied to himself. R.I.P., Hitchens.
Well said FRiend, and Amen to that.
And I will also say that some of the vicious and judgmental comments I'm reading in the wake of the death of Christopher Hitchens makes me wonder if the Westboro 'Baptist' Church somehow made some secret inroads into FR when nobody was looking.
They know who they are. And I say shame on them.

Thank you.
Your suggestion of approval, was much appreciated.
IMO, he was a cut above, and deserved as much.
Take care.

So, you tell me, do you believe you are smarter than something that doesn’t exist? Are you smarter than the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot?
Or are they smarter than you?

We knew Hitchens was dying, yet it is still sad. He had a fine, independent mind and spoke his piece brilliantly.
Rememember, his brother is a Conservative. I believe their father committed suicide. That’s hard on chidren.
RIP Christopher....
