Traitor? Treason? [Robert E. Lee]
Old Virginia Blog ^ | 5/10/10 | Richard Williams

Posted on 05/10/2010 3:17:06 PM PDT by Davy Buck

"If Lee was a traitor (and I don't believe he was), he would be the only traitor for which a ship in the United States Navy was ever named. He would be the only traitor in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. He would be the only traitor whose image was used in a positive way to recruit military personnel to fight and win WWII. Quite an accomplishment for a "traitor", wouldn't you say. . ."

Chase alone couldn't rule that. That's why they have nine justices.

Not quite; eight in this case. Remember the Republican controlled Congress fooling around with the number of Supreme Court Justices to control the outcome of the court? They prevented Johnson from naming two replacement justices (there being 10 justices authorized until Johnson tried to name a replacement).

Changes in the Court:

Exit: May 31, 1860 -- Peter V. Daniel (down to 8)

Lincoln inaugurated: Mar 4, 1861
Exit: Apr 4, 1861 -- John McLean (down to 7)
Exit: Apr 30, 1861 -- John A. Campbell (down to 6)
Join: Jan 27, 1862 -- Noah Swayne (up to 7)
Join: Jul 21, 1862 -- Samuel F. Miller (up to 8)
Join: Dec 10, 1862 -- David Davis (up to 9)
Change: Mar 3, 1863 -- Congress authorizes 10 justices (Lincoln gets to add one)
Join: May 20, 1863 -- Stephen J. Field (up to 10)
Exit: Oct 12, 1864 -- Roger B. Taney (down to 9)
Join: Dec 15, 1864 -- Salmon P. Chase (up to 10)

Johnson inaugurated: Apr 15, 1865
Exit: May 30, 1865 -- John Catron (down to 9)
Nominate: Apr 16, 1866 -- Johnson nominates Stanbery to fill Catron's seat
Change: Jul 23, 1866 -- Congress reduces authorized justices to 7 (Johnson prevented from naming Catron's and Wayne's replacements)
Exit: Jul 5, 1867 -- James M. Wayne (down to 8)

Grant inaugurated: Mar 4, 1869
Change: Apr 10, 1869 -- Congress authorizes 9 justices 1 month after Grant inaugurated
Exit: Jan 31, 1870 -- Robert C. Grier (down to 7)
Join: Mar 14, 1870 -- William Strong (up to 8)
Join: Mar 23, 1870 -- Joseph P. Bradley (up to 9)

Any historical documentation in your post?
Any logical thought?

"You would have to climb 40 feet to reach root level"...

And you're just as entertaining as always...

"Gramps?" "Senile?" Gosh - you've hurt my feelings! Maybe I should ping JimRob in response to your blatant, bigoted age-based hate speach! But that would imply some capability for semi-rational (say, kindergarten level) thought on your part - which you obviously lack...

take away slavery and leave every other cause you care to mention and the South doesn’t rebel. Leave slavery and remove every other cause and the South still rebels. Simple as that.

You may have a point there. My question is what political point might become as powerful today.

Didn't stop Lincoln...

Sure it did. It was Davis who ignored his constitution at a whim.

BTW, what fraternity did you belong ?

Ask mojitojoe. He knows more about me than I do.

Don't count me in the group that faults the "Goon" for what he did to his people and the US Constitution. I am not interested at what he did the the US people 1861-1865, really doesn't interest me the internal politics of a foreign country. It is like asking me when judging the crime of rape, do I care how tightly the rapist binds his victims wrists.

Since being forced back into the Federal Empire I am affected by what Saint Abe started, seems the progressives will finish his "work".
