Abe Lincoln was a dictator??? (Need Help combating loony argument)

Posted on 04/19/2010 8:18:35 AM PDT by erod

Hi FRiends,

I have two brothers who I love very much, they’re young and libertarian Ron Paul supporters, sigh. We get along and I’m hoping that one day they’ll come back to conservatism, but they have bought into a theory that I don’t think makes much sense:

Abe Lincoln was a dictator.

There are many websites dedicated to this nonsense you can Google "Abe Lincoln dictator" and get some weird stuff, if you want to check it out.

I need your help in busting this myth are there any books I can read on this subject to dispel this stuff? Do you know any of the arguments to combat this nonsense? Ie. Lincoln did not want to free the slaves.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me out, -Erod

He didn’t suspend the Constitution but rather ignored it whole cloth.

You are referring to the "Bill of Rights," not to the original seven articles. The "Bill of Rights" was a hypocritical invention of the Jeffersonian aristocrats to make damn sure the federal government never interfered with slavery. It has morphed into the most centralizing feature of the Constitution, invoked by the ACLU every time a local high school principal edits the "f-"word out of a student newspaper. So how did that turn out for you?

He didn’t suspend the 1864 elections, but made damn sure the casualty figures from Cold Harbor were not made public. Yea, he was a great all around guy. After imprisoning over 13,000 of his fellow Americans who disagreed with him politically, how much real competition was their to him.

Unlike that great anti-centralizing localist Jefferson Davis, right?

I'm sorry, but morality is more important than "liberty." And I'm afraid I much prefer Puritans to loose-moraled, bourbon swilling Episcopalians.

No it isn’t. Morality without freedom is nothing more then obeying your betters. You should know better. As for boubon swilling I plead guilty, Episcopalianism not guilty. BTW, Bourbon was another cultural contribution to America from the south. You may thank us.

Where do you think the expression “good help is hard to find” came from?

Southron imagination. There is not a single shred of evidence that Grant ever said that. No date. No source. No nothing.

This never happened in the South, there was a true melting of all cultures in the South, to include the black culture. It is a shared culture.

More nonsense.

Your thesis boils down to this: Yankees hate black people cause they didn't share a culture with them.

Southerners liked black people so much they thought everyone should own one.

Exactly. Morality is obeying G-d, Who is indeed better than us. And His laws are the only laws. Eighteenth century enlightenment secularism, which so influenced the Jeffersonians, was a forerunner to the revolt against G-d we find ourselves fighting against today.

As for boubon swilling I plead guilty,

"Wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Herbert Hoover forever! No lottery! Should I refer you to your local WCTU chapter?

Episcopalianism not guilty.

You're one of those Baptists who doesn't recognize other Baptists in the liquor store?

BTW, Bourbon was another cultural contribution to America from the south.

So am I.

You may thank us.

Ditto.

The material prosperity of the North was greatly dependent on the Federal Government; that of the the South not at all.

No, it depended on holding human beings as slaves.

In Lincoln, the tyrant, America had its first Caesar, the one who sowed the seeds for the rise of amerika. He should have been buried in an unmarked grave and history set straight with respect to this abomination in human form who was, indeed, a liar, cheat and racist. Dishonest Abe was probably the most evil and destructive President in American history. He was a racist and a statist who killed half a million Americans. He destroyed a Constitutional Republic. Obongo the Marxist Kenyan is now trying to put the final nail in the coffin of our Republic.

Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus, shut down newspapers, executed critics of the regime, and packed voting booths with soldiers, or it is false. Lincoln wanted to deport freed blacks to Africa, and thought that the white race must be superior, and that blacks and whites could not peacefully live together. Yankee newspapers ran editorials calling for the death of every man, woman, and child in the South, and the colonization of the Southern states by northern Yankees.

Lincoln’s goal in waging the war was to benefit Northern manufacturing interests and protect his own political career by preserving the union. It would have been cheaper and less destructive for Lincoln to simply buy the slaves and free them. Of all the nations which abolished slavery in the 1800s, only Abe Lincoln and the USA were stupid enough to fight a war over it. But of course it must be remembered that Lincoln did not free any slaves.

The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War by Thomas J. DiLorenzo

Lincoln cared nothing for enslaved blacks. He said “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it.”

Lincoln was a white supremacist. “I never have been in favor of bringing about the equality of the white and black races.”

“I am not now, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social or political equality of the white and black races. I am not now nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor of intermarriages with white people. There is a physical difference between the white and the black races which will forever forbid the two races living together on social or political equality. There must be a position of superior and inferior, and I am in favor of assigning the superior position to the white man.”

Lincoln in his speech to Charleston, Illinois, 1858

The Mythical Lincoln
by Thomas J. DiLorenzo

Every February 12 Americans think they are celebrating Lincoln’s birthday. But what they are really celebrating is the birth of the Leviathan state that Lincoln, more than anyone else, is responsible for bringing about. No wonder federal politicos have made his birth date a national holiday, engraved his face is on Mount Rushmore, built a Venus-like statue of him in Washington, D.C., and put his mugshot on the five dollar bill.

More than 130 years of government propaganda has hidden this fact from the American people by creating a Mythical Lincoln that never existed. Take, for instance, the fact that everyone supposedly knows – that Lincoln was an abolitionist. This would be a surprise to the preeminent Lincoln scholar, Pulitzer prize-winning Lincoln biographer David Donald, who in his 1961 book, Lincoln Reconsidered, wrote that “Lincoln was not an abolitionist.” And he wasn’t. He was glad to accept on behalf of the Republican Party any votes from abolitionists, but real abolitionists despised him. William Lloyd Garrison, the most prominent of all abolitionists, concluded that Lincoln “had not a drop of anti-slavery blood in his veins.”

Garrison knew Lincoln well. He knew that Lincoln stated over and over again for his entire adult life that he did not believe in social or political equality of the races, he opposed inter-racial marriage, supported the Illinois constitution’s prohibition of immigration of blacks into the state, once defended in court a slaveowner seeking to retrieve his runaway slaves but never defended a runaway, and that he was a lifelong advocate of colonization – of sending every last black person in the U.S. to Africa, Haiti, or central America – anywhere but in the U.S.

Lincoln is put into our minds as an angel and he is far from that.

He is also far from the demon that Lost Causers make him out to be. To hear you tell one would think that nobody had ever harmed a hair on a a single Indian's head before Lincoln came along.

There was one culture that the NE did develop and that was the pious assholiness of puritanism. I guess after they got bored burning witches they thought burning the South was great sport. _________________________ PhotobucketPhotobucket

Come on, mj. You're the one who claims to have my picture and boatloads of personal information on me, all courtesy of some unnamed Kansas freepers. You mean to tell me that you have to speculate as to whether someone is my brother or not? I'm truly disappointed.

Southerners liked black people so much they thought everyone should own one.

Please explain the NE idea that the west should be a preserve for the white man only? (See Horace Greeley). As for southerners owning black men, one third of the black population in the south were freemen. Note, the Confederacy did in fact have black troops in their ranks. When will you understand that whites and blacks grew up together in the South? It was kind of hard to have a ghettoized farm. It is because of this that a single culture emerged. This never happened in the North. Read Lincolns defense of the no black rules in Illinois and tell me that yankees were fighting for equal rights. That is merely a revisionist fairy tale.
