Sophisticated Sarah: Palin Is Part Hepburn, Part Loren, Part Thatcher, Part Annie Oakley
thebulletin.us ^ | Saturday, December 19, 2009 | MICHAEL P. TREMOGLIE

Watching the video of Sarah Palin’s appearance with William Shatner on the “Tonight Show” with Conan O’Brien, the one word that came to mind was style. Yet, there was more to it than that.

After all, she entered the arena of late night television, a stage that has excoriated her routinely — the “enemy camp” as Chris Matthews might say. Mrs. Palin's has been scoffed at before by Mr. O’Brien. The show has featured William Shatner mocking Mrs. Palin’s tweets by reading them as dramatic recitations.

Still, Mrs. Palin handled her appearance with the aplomb of Beyonce at the MTV Video Music Awards. She exuded the charm of Sophia Loren; the dignity of a Katharine Hepburn.

The blend of these qualities, with the feistiness and intellect of Margaret Thatcher and the forty-something feminine beauty of a Demi Moore, is what makes Mrs. Palin so dangerous to the political establishments of both parties.

She has a certain manner, an allure about her that has endeared her to a wide swath of the American public in a short period of time. She is upsetting a lot of apple carts and the entrenched politicos resent it. They have directed their fire at her.

Indeed, Mrs. Palin has weathered a torrent of vitriol. While her primary critics are liberal Democrats, the bien-pensants of both parties fear and loathe her.

This was evinced recently by Michael Petrilli’s hortatory article in the Wall Street Journal. Petrilli’s haughty piece titled, “Whole Foods Republicans,” had this to say about Mrs. Palin, “…there's Sarah Palin, whose entire brand is anti-intellectual.”

Mr. Petrilli’s remarks about Mrs. Palin’s supporters echoed what liberals have said about military personnel in Iraq (Senator John Kerry, D-Mass.: “you get stuck in Iraq”) and the audience of the Limbaugh show.

A good man.

The snow is great, it finally stopped and the kids are having a blast in it. My, I’ve been shoveling my driveway and deck...about every 4 hours to keep up.

Btw, there are things I disagree with Palin and they will come up over time if she runs. But I still haven’t seen a candidate as conservative as her that is electable.

What puts her over the top with me is both her conservatism and the fact that she took on the establishment, both Democrat and GOP.

She isn’t perfect by any stretch. None of us are.

I agree with you, of all the potential candidates out there, Sarah Palin is certainly at the head of the pack and I can think of far worse candidates that could be leading the way.

Be careful with that snow shoveling, I mentioned to WVK last night (and I know you’ve already heard it many times) that excessive exertion from snow shoveling is a quick way to a heart attack, I recall reading that it is the number one cause of cardiac problems during the winter.

Guess we need the government to step in and mandate smaller snow shovels that won’t pick up too much at one time, and a timer alarm that will warn you when you’ve been shoveling more than 15 minutes at a time, lol

(I shouldn’t joke, some effin’ bureaucrat in D.C. will think that’s a fine idea and get his 0bamunist masters to allocate a few billion for ‘research’ lol)

Have a good day!

And for those who should know better.....

I do know better but just for fun, I can't resist posting this comment from DeMint on the Hugh Hewitt Show in early 2007:

"And as I talk to Mitt Romney, he understands it [the private sector], he’s lived it, and I have not been in a room that any speaker has lit up as much as the ones I’ve been in with Mitt Romney in a long, long time, probably since Reagan. So I think he’ll be a great leader, and I’m not picking him because he’s the front runner right now. I’m picking him because I think he’ll be the best president."
Mitt Romney lights up the room? Take it back, DeMint! I can forgive you for anything but that...LOL.

It's gratifying to see how silent this thead has become with the knowledge that Rabadash Rabs preferred candidate supports a RINO.

Hopefully he will stop bombarding the future Palin threads with his ridiculous, petty troll like knocks of Sarah, and his posse will begin to realize the nonsense of being 1%ers.

Can we talk about Sarah's actual beliefs now? If Reagan's presidency and policies are our model, she clearly stands in his footsteps better than any of our candidates at this time. She holds to Reagan's three legged stool of strong on national defense, strong economy (free enterprise), and strong moral fiber (social conservatism).

Can we concentrate on how best to defeat the true evil we are facing with the democrats now?

Be careful with that snow shoveling, I mentioned to WVK last night...

33 high, 31 now, 18 tonight. $10 and a 16 yo neighbor got me finished. Meanwhile,Spot ran all over the mountain, bounding and bouncing. He looked like a rabbit, and jumped into drifts, seemingly just for fun. He came in a little while ago, and hasn't moved since. Me, too.

Got a NY Strip on, and some rice pilaf cooking, peas and baby onions, washing it down with a merlot, and finishing with pineapple upside-down cake. Deadskins at 4:15...

Merry Christmas. Only 4 shopping days left.

Sounds like you’ve had quite the day. I’m trying not to think about the ‘Skins, since Snyder bought the team it’s been nothing but headaches and heartaches. I remember when Steve Spurrier was brought in and I actually thought good things would happen there because I watched Spurrier with the Gators in Florida and he did miraculous things there, but when Snyder managed to convince Joe Gibbs to come back to the NFL and coach Washington, even Spurrier was enthused about it (probably because he wanted out by that point lol) but because he knew Gibbs record and believed Gibbs could turn things around.

Ah well, as long as John Riggins keeps giving Snyder living Hell, there is at least some entertainment there, but I would be surprised if Jim Zorn is back for another season as head coach next year.

That dinner sounds great, I can almost smell it through my monitor, lol

The only way Mitt Romney could light up a room would be if someone with a cigarette lighter helped him ignite some blue flames when he broke wind.

Now THAT would be a blast that is vast, lol

You seem to have no problem with your first choice for the GOP nomination endorsing RINOs.

A lot of perfectly good people screwed up and endorsed RINOs in 2008.

That can be dealt with.

But endorsing RINOs in the aftermath of the 2008 election is just asking for trouble.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lame.

In DeMint's endorsement letter of Romney, he said the following:

As Governor he (Romney) faced down a $3 billion deficit and balanced the budget. He passed innovative health care reforms and education scholarships based on achievement.

DeMint cited Romneycare in his endorsement letter as an innovation and a success. In his endorsement letter...the very same Romneycare you've been decrying as socialism for months on end.

Do you think DeMint wasn't aware of the nature of Romneycare when he endorsed Romney?

Why is DeMint your first (or second) choice for the GOP nomination in 2012?

And why do you care, anyway? You're not a Republican, you didn't vote for Palin in the last election, and DeMint is nothing more than a blip on the electorate's radar screen.

Your DeMint advocacy amounts to the MSM's and the Democrats' virtual endorsement of McCain as the GOP nominee last year...a recipe for a Republican loss...which is the goal of Democrats and Third Partiers everywhere.

Rabs,

It doesn’t make great reading I agree. Dunno if it’s true but I read somewhere that if Jim D doesn’t throw his hat in the ring for 2012 then its a fair bet he’ll go with Mitt.

That’s politicans for you - the buggers never fail to disappoint!

I know it’s from 2007, but there is no way I am going to even try to defend that letter of DeMint’s.

If he backs Romney in 2012, despite the flagrant failure of both Romneycare and Obamacare, then he can go to hell.

Despite the high opinion many have around here for DeMint, I’ve not fully trusted him because of his connections to Slick Willard. I think he’s been playing a dangerous game of trying to insinuate himself with him in order to score a VP slot, but he needs to understand you NEVER use Slick Willard, he only uses you. He’ll use DeMint as long as he remains a useful idiot for his cause, and then discard him when he is no longer, exactly how he has always used people. DeMint should smarten up and cut his ties now. He had his best shot to be his running mate in ‘08 and that’s not going to happen now. The longer he allows himself to give a smidge of credibility to a wholly uncredible phony, the worse he’s going to look. If he endorses him in ‘12, I will consider him to be no better than his SC seatmate Graham, willfully destructive to the Conservative cause.

Most conservative pols picked a RINO frontrunner to back. I wouldn’t not support DeMint if he ran himself just because of that.

But if he backs him to the hilt again he’s either

A)Not too bright
B)Doesn’t care if Myth isn’t conservative just wants to use him to ride the VP train

Neither stupidity nor hyper-ambition are desirable qualities in a leader. Don’t do it DeMint.

I resent your implication that I was attempting to draw attention away from McCain by making a statement regarding the vetting of zero.

Regardless of your post, I disagree with you on most points. I had to hold my nose to vote for McCain in 2008, but, as I said, he is conservative on some issues.

Your attempt to change my mind on this, is useless. You seem to be in a cynical mode. So, we’ll agree to disagree.
