UDC marks another black Confederate grave By Clayta Richards / Chronicle staffwriter
On Sunday afternoon at Old Union Cemetery in southern White County, over 180 people gathered to pay a debt owed nearly 80 years. The group included members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Sons of Confederate Veterans, family and friends, all there to memorialize the service of Pvt. Henry Henderson, a black Confederate soldier.
Henderson was born in 1849 in Davidson County, NC. He was 11 years old when he entered service with the Confederate States of America as a cook and servant to Colonel William F. Henderson, a medical doctor. Records show Henry was wounded during his service, but he continued to serve until the war's end in 1865. He was discharged in Salem, NC, age 16.
After the war, Henry married Miranda Shockley, of White County, TN. The couple raised five children.
"We're here to honor him," said his great-grandson, Oscar Fingers, of Evansville, IN. "I think he would be proud his family has come this far and to know all we have done." Several other family members made the trip with Fingers from Indiana for Sunday's ceremony.
Sons Dalton and Lee received Henderson's first and last Tennessee Colored Confederate pension check upon their father's death in September 1926. The check provided enough funds to bury their father, but not enough to buy a headstone for his grave.
The 60,000-90,000 black Confederate soldiers are often called "the forgotten Confederates," but through the concerted efforts of the Capt. Sally Tompkins Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy along with the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, several graves have been found in the Upper Cumberland and have been or will be marked.
Pvt. Henry Henderson's service was finally recognized and his grave officially marked on Sunday, all to the snap of salutes from the grandsons of fellow Confederates, volleys of gunfire and cannons shot toward the distant hillsides of his final resting place.
Official U.S. government grave markers are available to all Confederate veterans. For additional information, contact Barbara Parsons, 484-5501.
But you, on the other hand, are most amusing. It's fun watching you grasp at anything and everything in you attempts to insult people. This latest post of yours makes about as much sense as all your other ones.
Just another Democrat using the flag to attack a black man.
So far we've already seen Stephens account of the story, as well as that of Hunter and Lincoln. This is Supreme Court Justice John A. Campbell's recollection of the story, and to whom Lincoln's "Root, hog or die!" comment was directed:
Mr. Hunter spoke of the cruelty of such measures to the slave population, especially in localities in which the men had been removed. that the women and children were a tax upon their masters, and if emancipated, would be helpless and suffering. To this Mr. Lincoln replied with a story, of a man who had planted potatoes for his hogs, and left them in the ground to be rooted for; the ground froze, but the master said the hogs must root nevertheless.
Justice John A. Campbell, Reminiscences and Documents Relating to the Civil War during the Year 1865, Baltimore, MD: John Murphy & Co (1887), p. 13
Not in the least. But it's interesting that his contention is that more blacks died getting here by far, than the sum total ever held in bondage. And that slavery was a world wide practice (even up north). I always question why one's vitriol is directed at a certain segment of a population, when there are far more that engaged in the practice, and many Islamics that still do. Not that I'm accusing you of any bias or anything, I just can't understand the seething hatred that is evident towards Confederates.
My gggrandfather was a Confederate officer (may God bless him) that neved owned any slaves. All he owned was a few acres that he cultivated himself with his wife and three small children. He certainly wouldn't fight a war to make some plantation owner richer - that was his competition. He wouldn't fight to own slaves, and he wasn't conscripted. He joined because his state was under attack, the Constitution that his ancestors fought for had been overthrown.
If you haven't read it I would recommend it, Dr. Sowell presents some interesting evidence.
Your great great grandfather was forced into the situation by the slaveowning elite who precipitated the conflict. Had it been up to people like your ancestor, the Deep South states would never have attempted to leave the Union, because only the rabid pro-slavery element had anything to gain from disunion.
I don't agree with the choice your ancestor was forced to make but his decision came from honorable motives. On the other hand, the selfish Southern politicians who started the whole mess often left the fighting to their more honorable neighbors while they stayed home and took it easy on the plantation.
I think one can honor the memory of such Confederate ancestors while at the same time revile the selfishness that would sacrifice the peace and unity of a nation to their narrow material interest.
LOL! You don't deny it? You are the poster who almost always refers to the 'Davis regime'. I enjoy responding to your assertations in kind, as far more historians consider it to be the Lincoln regime, and that he was a dictator, even though some of the Lincoln cult consider him to be a benevolent dictator, if such could be said to exist.
Can you imagine someone claiming Attila the Hun, Hitler or Sadaam Hussein to be benovolent? ROTF!!! As far as insulting anyone, OBL did make the comment that there was no distinction between civilians and the military. You have made similar claims here, defending the tactics of the Lincoln regime, Sherman [*SPIT*], Sheridan etc.
Now pardon me if you take offense, but I would certainly be in position to know of the atrocities committed against my ancestors, and I find it disgusting that you would revel in their slow death by starvation thanks to Union depradations against innocent civilians. That position aligns your with those that revelled in the death of thousands on 11 Sep 2001. All I'm saying is that our Commander-in-Chief - President Bush - attempts to minimize collateral deaths - I wholly support that position. I also agree with him that OBL must be hunted down and killed, or 'brought to justice' as the President says. I certainly DON'T support the policies of any President or American, that finds cause to celebrate the deaths of the innocents among us.
May well have been. It was not a Confederate flag in this case though.
Should we consider the flag that was used in this attack as racist? Nah, its the person misusing the flag who is a racist, not the flag. Some people don't seem to understand that.
And not surprisingly we have three different versions of what was said. You will, quite naturally, cling to those which paint Lincoln in the worst possible light while I, not surprisingly, will accept Lincoln's version as the most accurate. Now what?
I can't imagine reveling in the starvation of any innocent civilian. However, in this particular case I'm forced to consider the source, and it's past history of extreme bias, and I maintain a healthy skepticism as to the story's veracity. Pardon me if that offends you.
thus your base premises are FALSE & your conclusions are BOGUS, SIMPLISTIC & DUMB.
until you figure that out, you will be the BUTT of jokes about DUMB & clueLESS people on FR.
at least 3-4 people have pointed that out in the past to you. why have you NOT admitted that you're 100% WRONG???? (could it be that you're just a TROLL???)

It was probibly in the lobby of the building where they were protesting.
That's a big difference then the way the Confederate flag has been used by white power elements.
Just keep defending all those democrats and hating republicans like Lincoln STAND, that's the way to show which side you are on and where your true loyalties lie.
That and saying you wish the confederacy was reborn so this nation could be what it once was...
Divided into two warring camps, democrat against republican......
don't you understand that you've been LIED TO & MADE a FOOL OF your whole life. face it, "roo", your BASE PREMISES are FALSE, thus everything you post is also FALSE & makes you look clueLESS & SILLY.
try doing some DEEP reading into the original documents of the period & you'll look smarter. look at what the DAMNyankee elites DID, rather than what they SAID & you won't have your eyes so closed to the TRUTH, as much as it hurts to admit you've been BEGUILED!
free dixie,sw
OR could it be that the northeastern DAMNyankee spin machine has CONSTANTLY LIED about the robbery/rape/looting & MURDER of TENS of THOUSANDS of INNOCENT/UNarmed civilians, just because (to quote Dr Susan Brownmiller) "they could" (engage in CRIMINAL ACTS without fear of punishment).

tell us STAND how the democrat party has changed since the civil war?
Please do tell us how they no longer use the symbols of their rebellion against those they once enslaved.
Tell us how raising the fear of the confederate flag isn't the same as creating fear of the confederate flag?
Then tell us how republicans are supposed to be proud of a the flag the democrats fought for against the United States.
Then tell us about Kirk Lyon's ties to Timothy McVeigh, and why McVeigh wore a shirt with Lincoln's picture and the words "Sic Semper Tyrannis" on it the day of the OKC bombing.
Another Freeper Civil War lunacy thread PING!!!!!!!!!
