The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
Who is casting a stone? Stoning means killing somebody for their crimes, are we trying to kill Mel, or simply expressing an opinion. Seriously, I do hope Mel gets well and comes around in his thinking. But it is going to take a major shift in his thinking for that to happen.
The guy's just an actor/producer. He makes films. That's all. His opinions don't matter to me. Like him or hate him, maybe he's a bigot and maybe he's not, but he's not somebody I'm going to spend my day arguing about or wasting my time over.
It was still a great movie.
So how is one supposed to feel when Gibson blames Jews for all the wars in the world, and even asks the arresting deputy if he's a Jew?
Or that he is going to sexually molest the arresting deputy?
Perhaps his next movie will be "Brokeback Station House."
What is most striking to me is the complete lack of context of his statements. What do wars and Jews have to do at all with an arrest? At least Buchanan is anti-Semitic only when he's on-topic.
Well, take solace that the lampooning of the Gibson by the talented on the Right has officially begun. Here's a starter, while I work on my own:
Yep, just like the fraus in Germany used to faint over Hitler, like he was a member of the Beatles.
Hey, reality check for all: MEL IS AN ACTOR! Hello! His 'career' is to pretend to be someone else and entertain. And he does.
So what if he's a foul-mouthed anti-semite? So are about half of the gulfstream liberals in hollywood, and virtually every popular African-American political figure. Mel got caught, that's all.
BTB, how man of you ever said the N-word when you lost your temper? Drunk or sober... or made a passing comment to your friend in the car when a beautiful jogger ran by.
Among other things, alcohol amplifies emotional response. It does give wings to our irrational thoughts, too, folks. And a voice, sometimes.
I think we can all agree that Mel goofed up, and maybe a couple of bones fell out of his closet...
Do you really expect him to call his Dad a liar?
From a link you posted.
When asked by an interviewer in early 2004 whether the Holocaust happened, the actor / director / producer responded that some of his best friends ''have numbers on their arms,'' then added: ''Yes, of course. Atrocities happened. War is horrible. The Second World War killed tens of millions of people. Some of them were Jews in concentration camps.''
Just curious. Why did you put up a pic of Rush in response to comment #2 that said that Gibson's true views came out? When has Rush said anything negative about Jews? He is one of the biggest defenders of Israel. Or are there some other personal views that you think Rush has not been honest about? If so, what are they, and why do you think that?
That's intereting. 25% of Freepers are Jewish? I know only 25% of Jews voted for Bush, but I didn't know they were so strong a presense on Fr.
Good grief.
You and Mel are real buds, it appears.
Right down to the blood libel.
Making a mistake is bumping another person's car or knocking over somebody's drink. Mel is 50 years old. Sure, he accidentally got blithering drunk and drove like a nut, endangering lives the whole way.
Well, my view of the man just jumped from pretty high to almost nothing.
I still like him in The Patriot.
Hey Mel, "Big Smiiile!"
Amazing how these two ideas continue to be connected in people's minds. Conservatives continue to be bewildered when their pro-Israelism does not exclude antisemitism.
I take it you're not a Jew. Let's say Stephen Spielberg said F&&KING BLACKS...they're the reason for all the problems in the world...YA THINK the press would just LAUGH IT OFF? But like always, when it comes to the Jews, we deserve it, right? YOU DON'T GET IT. NEVER AGAIN.
I am an alcoholic myself. It excuses nothing that he just did.
This summer has been a tough one for people I know going back to the bottle. Get some help Mel.
