The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
Being drunk is never an excuse for bad and dangerous behavior. Go ask all the people who ride buses everyday because their licenses were taken away because they were driving drunk. I'm so surprised people at FR would use the "HE WAS DRUNK" defense to justify this outrageous display of anti-semitism.
But on another note that people here might understand is now ALL the people who said Gibson made THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST to push his anti-semetic feelings are having one big laugh now...because THEY WERE RIGHT. And I was one Jew who defended him. But no more.
I guess it wasn't made up.
I never want to see this _____'s face again.
Well, that's true, but he got one anyway. I'll judge Mel's actions, not his heart. That's God's job. That said, the man certainly screwed up.
Well, right here on FR, there seems to be something of an 'official' report, which shows what Gibson actually did say...Heres the link...

If they come door to door for the Jews, like they did in Germany, how will you be considered then?
Good. Me too.
Yup! Just like the Dixie Chicks he is going to feel some pain over this.
Maybe he's fallen off the wagon more than just this weekend. Here's his promo for the movie he's making now:
Friday May 12, 11:45 AM
Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".
I think the booze has pickled his brain.
I think there's a sense that everything is spiraling out of control. In this country and abroad...I'm not saying it's true...but perception is everything. That's the only explanation I can come up with.
No democrat would ever admit to being ashamed...even if he were capable of feeling shame.
No, but I just washed down some ribs with cracked pepper, kosher salt, and jack daniels sauce.. I washed them down with a Shiraz. The Bush's baked beans may be a problem later!
Now, I'll go burn a G2 and have a shot of Sambucca! Have a good evening. The logo posted was from the Sunbeam Tiger, made in sunny old England. They installed a ford v-8 and called it fast! It was/still is! James Bond (Sean Connery) drove one in one of his movies.
Did you read his "apology" statement? He doesn't deny any of it.
My opinion is that he's a loving son who's not going to say Dad's a fruitbat. But who knows what his real opinion is. I tend not to believe what alcoholics say when drunk. I learned that first hand.
I'm not even going to pass my own judgment on Mel yet, but I wish he hadn't said what he did. I guess we'll see what he does next.
All of us have both good and bad within, we have responsibility to keep the bad under control. We're all bound to slip at times, but we also need to keep in mind sometimes a slip can do irreparable harm.
Maybe Mel will get Ramsey Clark for his defense attorney...
Right.
I hope that was sarcasm.
Yes. Yes it was.
You make me sick.
Please read my posts at #'s 203, 234, and 256.
When you're done you may apologize to me.
Reports of comments he made/didn't make about Jews had not come out at that time.
