It appears that the Northern invasion of the South is complete -- at least it is on a patch of land known as Delta Plantation in Jasper County.
There, a diehard rebel named Henry E. Ingram Jr. made his last stand against the onslaught of Yankees, only to be thwarted by a man from Long Island, N.Y., and now -- gasp -- a French Canadian.
Ingram promised to keep Yankees out of Delta Plantation in Jasper County when he bought 1,700 acres there in 1998. His resolve to keep them out still is strong, but the covenants he put on the land don't seem to have any teeth.
Those covenants did, however, scare Canadian-raised Bluffton resident Louise Legare a bit as she was close to signing a contract to buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on the land from Bluffton Home Builders.
The list of rules she got from the builders was missing the first pages, so she went to the Jasper County Courthouse to get the missing ones. There, she found the covenants, or rules, that Ingram demanded of buyers:
1. They could not be Yankees.
2. They could not have the last name Sherman (an obvious reference to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman).
3. And the land could not be sold or leased to those whose last names could be rearranged to spell Sherman.
Clearly, Ingram doesn't like Northern folk.
Now, however, Legare and Bluffton Home Builders are working with Ingram's son, Ashley Ingram, to remove the covenants. The former Delta Plantation is on both sides of U.S. 17, just north of the Georgia state line.
"When (Legare) brought it to us, we all kind of had a good laugh," said Jim Hobbs, a partner in the home-building firm.
In fact, Legare is buying the land and home from Bill Cook, another partner in the company, who happens to be a native of Long Island, N.Y. No one at Bluffton Home Builders had seen the covenants before Legare found the missing pages, and no one has ever tried to enforce them, Hobbs said.
If Henry Ingram had his way, he still would keep Yankees off of the 1,700 acres he once owned. His holdings on the plantation have dwindled to 10 acres.
Ingram, now a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, said his son and attorney, who are both local, should be looking out for his anti-northerner wishes now.
"Yankees destroy everything they have up North, then they come down here," Ingram said. "When they destroy everything (in the South), where are they going to move next? Another country?"
Legare, who grew up north of Montreal, figures her far-northern upbringing must be especially abhorrent to Ingram.
"I must be more of a Yankee," she said. "I'm the person he really doesn't want to live there."
Amazingly, Legare is a much better choice to own Southern land than a New Yorker, according to Ingram.
"French people are much better and more desirable than a Yankee," said Ingram, who once owned video-poker casinos in Jasper County. "They don't stick their noses in other people's business."
The same feature drew Legare and Ingram to the land -- nature. Ingram said he's seen Carolina panthers, bald eagles and fox squirrels on the land. It is that quiet beauty Legare is after.
"I was raised in a very nature-like environment," Legare said. "I think the nature is beautiful in South Carolina."
Ingram, who says he is leaving Texas for Costa Rica soon, cites the boorish manners of Yankees as one of his prime dislikes for them.
"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

Bear in mind that for the North, torture was an aberation. For the South, it was business as usual.
For people from the north, taking part in the slave trade was despicable. For the south, it was the peak of the social pyramid. Most honored in the North was the successful business man. Most despised in the south was the man who had to work.
During the Civil War, students in the North continued to attend school, artists continued to produce, industry continued to operate. In the south, all matter of productive activity was put on hold. Newspapers were never allowed to protest against the foolish war that the South began, or the illegal compact between several slaver dominated state governments that began the succession crisis.
Rape by Northern whites was horrible, and is to be condemned. Rape by Southern whites was a standard practice, and was thought to be good policy.
We are well shut of that culture. The cost paid was not too much to be rid of it.
My first pickup truck had a bumper sticker on it that read, "Welcome to Texas! Now Go Home!"
1. tried by a military tribunal that had NO lawful jurisdiction to try him,
2. on SUBBORNED evidence, which at the time of the courts martial, was KNOWN to be PERJURY.
3.denied the right to call witnesses on his behalf OR to cross-examine the "witnesses" called to testify against him,
4. UNlawfully sentenced to hang, for crimes which he was NOT even PRESENT at the time of (much less guilty of)AND
5.executed (we southerners call it LYNCHED!), after being denied the lawful rights of any other condemned federal/military prisoner (including, that he was NOT allowed to make his confession to a Catholic priest, as REQUIRED by his faith, and was even denied a burial in the local Catholic cemetery!).
i wouldn't mention CPT Wurtz if i were you, as it makes you look either IGNORANT, filled with HATE and/or UNtruthful.

we have enough LOUD-mouthed, stupid, idiots down here, already.

in point of fact, decent people everywhere in the USA despised the "slave-traders" as "socially unacceptable", in the antebellum period. such persons would NOT have been invited to the "Big House" for tea.
otoh, DAMNyankees (who comprised the VAST majority of the persons IN the "slave trade") were from new england.
"new englanders":
1. bought slaves at their barracoons in West Africa,
2.OWNED the ships that brought the Africans here,
3.CAPTAINED/crewed the slave ships,
4. sold the slaves at auction,
5.financed the sales &
6.were conceded internationally to be "the leading lights" of the "flesh business" from the very first days of the "peculiar institution".
"yankees" from new england have FOREVER been money-hungry,SANCTIMONIOUS, HYPOCRITES! ONLY after importation of new slaves from abroad was OUTLAWED, did the "DYs" decide that slavery was WRONG!

I wish Reconstruction could have been so conducted and extended so the sanctimonious New England effect on Dixie would have been greater and longer-lasting. Maybe the South would not have been so violence-filled, ignorant and poor for so many decades.
There were good men in the South with fine moral instincts, but they were powerless against the slave system without the external infusion of decency that came mainly from New England.
Some years ago, while dining alone in Manhattan, I became intrigued by a conversation, that I couldn't help overhearing, at the next table. A woman was telling a man how she had gone to a far away country as an exchange student and civil war had erupted the day of her arrival; the home in which she was to stay was attacked, before she could finish unpacking; she had to jump out of the window and seek refuge in the wilderness, and she didn't speak the language, wasn't even sure where she was, and had no idea who was on what side... The experience became more and more bizarre as she talked, and it also became obvious that I was listening spellbound, with my jaw on the table. She began to address her conversation to me also, and before I knew it I had joined them at their table. Now that's real New York!
A similar experience happened in California. At the table behind me, I began to overhear a fascinating conversation. An obviously extremely intelligent man was explaining to his wife, an accupuncturist, and to a Benedictine priest from Italy his research into the original documents concerning Jesus. He had translated original texts for himself from ancient Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, and other languages. As he translated these documents he became aware of a powerful persona somewhere within and as the subject of these texts. (I hope I have related his opinion correctly.) Naturally--I turned around and said, "I have got to join this conversation," and moved to their table. All three of them welcomed me. They were delightful. I asked questions, and they sought my opinions. They were all unbelievably courteous and wonderful. I hated to leave them when it was time to go. The man, in fact, was Stephen Mitchell. When his book about Jesus was published, I bought a copy. His translation of the T'ow de Ching is definitive as far as I'm concerned. I've read it countless times.
Wonderful people are everywhere.
Well said, Kanga, and true.
in MANY cases, it was the SAME new england HYPOCRITES, who "railed at" the "peculiar institution", while STILL owning the slave ships AND/OR the banks & insurance companies that PROFITED by the slave trade.
as i said, the SELF-righteous DYs have forever been really good at "do as i say, but not as i do"! (for example,MANY schools in new england are STILL racially SEGREGATED, a HALF CENTURY after Brown v. Board of Ed.)
perhaps, we southerners should send you some FREEDOM RIDERS to help the north DESEGREGATE????

i discovered this when a grad student at Tulane. there are MANY records at the African-American Museum, too, that profusely illustrate the FACT of northern HYPOCRASY & deviousness!
free dixie,sw
they were after all, DAMNyankees, so the members of the "coven" on FR defend them unto death.
free dixie,sw
You're a liar. Name one abolitionist who owned slave ships.
If that's the best answer you can make up then I'm not the bonehead in this discussion.
Sure. The day you start providing your's. Let's start with the "100,000 free blacks in confederate army" nonsense.
In terms of your nearly extinct breed of rabid neo-confederate rabble rouser's, just recall those you call "Yankees" by the millions will always out number the tiny crackpot cult of neo-confeds - in your own backyard too, which is naturally a huge improvement.
You're living proof! LOL
You have to admit that it is a logical explanation.
