Yankee clauses dashed [Local landowner REALLY didn't like yankees...]
The Island Packet ^ | 07/06/2006 | JIM FABER

It appears that the Northern invasion of the South is complete -- at least it is on a patch of land known as Delta Plantation in Jasper County.

There, a diehard rebel named Henry E. Ingram Jr. made his last stand against the onslaught of Yankees, only to be thwarted by a man from Long Island, N.Y., and now -- gasp -- a French Canadian.

Ingram promised to keep Yankees out of Delta Plantation in Jasper County when he bought 1,700 acres there in 1998. His resolve to keep them out still is strong, but the covenants he put on the land don't seem to have any teeth.

Those covenants did, however, scare Canadian-raised Bluffton resident Louise Legare a bit as she was close to signing a contract to buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on the land from Bluffton Home Builders.

The list of rules she got from the builders was missing the first pages, so she went to the Jasper County Courthouse to get the missing ones. There, she found the covenants, or rules, that Ingram demanded of buyers:

1. They could not be Yankees.

2. They could not have the last name Sherman (an obvious reference to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman).

3. And the land could not be sold or leased to those whose last names could be rearranged to spell Sherman.

Clearly, Ingram doesn't like Northern folk.

Now, however, Legare and Bluffton Home Builders are working with Ingram's son, Ashley Ingram, to remove the covenants. The former Delta Plantation is on both sides of U.S. 17, just north of the Georgia state line.

"When (Legare) brought it to us, we all kind of had a good laugh," said Jim Hobbs, a partner in the home-building firm.

In fact, Legare is buying the land and home from Bill Cook, another partner in the company, who happens to be a native of Long Island, N.Y. No one at Bluffton Home Builders had seen the covenants before Legare found the missing pages, and no one has ever tried to enforce them, Hobbs said.

If Henry Ingram had his way, he still would keep Yankees off of the 1,700 acres he once owned. His holdings on the plantation have dwindled to 10 acres.

Ingram, now a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, said his son and attorney, who are both local, should be looking out for his anti-northerner wishes now.

"Yankees destroy everything they have up North, then they come down here," Ingram said. "When they destroy everything (in the South), where are they going to move next? Another country?"

Legare, who grew up north of Montreal, figures her far-northern upbringing must be especially abhorrent to Ingram.

"I must be more of a Yankee," she said. "I'm the person he really doesn't want to live there."

Amazingly, Legare is a much better choice to own Southern land than a New Yorker, according to Ingram.

"French people are much better and more desirable than a Yankee," said Ingram, who once owned video-poker casinos in Jasper County. "They don't stick their noses in other people's business."

The same feature drew Legare and Ingram to the land -- nature. Ingram said he's seen Carolina panthers, bald eagles and fox squirrels on the land. It is that quiet beauty Legare is after.

"I was raised in a very nature-like environment," Legare said. "I think the nature is beautiful in South Carolina."

Ingram, who says he is leaving Texas for Costa Rica soon, cites the boorish manners of Yankees as one of his prime dislikes for them.

"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

several scholars have considered those questions.

Yeah and when I want their opinions I'll ask them for them, I asked for yours, so rather then parrot what you have read give me your own honest opinion and why you have formed those opinions.

True or false you have never had anyone give you the type of opinion I have given you I.E. The Democrats are to blame for all the problems leading to the civil war during the civil war and after the civil war and for most of the racism in this country because they use racism to collect votes.

That is my own personal opinion of which I have based upon historical fact not the historical opinions of others. I want to hear your opinions, not the opinions of others.

Why do you believe that let's call the fractured nation the Federal States of America (FSA) would fight against the CSA during WWI and WWII instead of along side of say The CSA, Britain and France against the Kaiser and Hitler?

Teddy Roosevelt was no friend of the Kaiser and FDR was more a friend of England then say Huey Long or other southerners were. and yet you believe that The FSA would fight beside Imperial Germany and the Nazis, Why?

It makes a better storyline? How about the actions of the leaders of the day, should that have so sort of effect on your alternative history?

Slavery is different from kidnapping.

Slavery is a creation of the state. Kidnapping is a crime by the individual.

Actually, we had been south a long time before that.

Someone needed to design the forts built with federal money, designed by federal engineers, and retaken after the late unpleasantness caused by the traitors.

The difference is Jefferson et al. explained the reasons why they wanted freedom and deserved it in a document which holds up well today.

The South Carolina traitors: committed treason, not for Freedom, but to continue to be able their oppression of HALF the population of their state. Well if you are satisfied by their reasons for pursuing separation, opening fire on the military forces placed their by the nation for their security, well, there is no saving you.

There is one defense against Treason, that is Victory. That defense is not available to the so called "confederates".

On March 13, the Confederate Congress passed General Order 14, and President Davis signed the order into law. The order was issued March 23, 1865, but only a few African American companies were raised, and the war ended before they could be used in battle."

You act like the two are connected. Cleburne was roundly criticized for his letter, and Davis ordered him to retract it. It may be the reason why he never rose to command a corps in spite of the fact that men of lesser ability were appointed corps and army commanders over him.

Oh, and a funny thing about that legislation passed by the confederate congress. It did not contain any clause freeing slaves for their service. Had the south won the war they would have been returned to their masters. Some gratitude, huh?

Who said it was "proof", Slavery exists today I don't need to prove that because it does.

Granted it is not the legal kind where men, women, and children are bought and sold legally but it is slavery none the less.

My point of course is simple, there has never been a system of slavery where the slaves willingly sell themselves into slavery, ergo any government with at it's root cause for existence the institution of slavery is inherently evil.

And before you attempt to prove that the United States was some how equal to the confederacy in that regard, may I point out that the solo clause in the constitution covering "slavery" does not use the words slave, slavery, or Negro.

Whenever you refuse to respond to historical facts you always resort to name calling and slander but then again what else should be expected from a raging, fanatical neo-confederate robot?

The question is, why would you only focus on re-fighting the Civil War for the pro-slavery losers in 2006?

"as for WW1/WW2, i think the south would have fought with GB as an ally, while the Union would have fought with Germany in WW1/WW2 or stayed neutral."

You saying that Americans residing in Northeastern states, including urban Jewish Americans, would have sided with Nazi Germany, once again clearly exemplifies how twisted and demented you really are.

Some gratitude, huh?

Black Confederate Soldier

If that black Confederate soldier had been a slave and had the South won the rebellion then he would have been returned to slavery. Kind of hard to work that fact into a recruiting pitch, isn't it?

Just like the bozo that 'knows' that 9/11 was a Bush conspiracy; he doesn't need to prove it, he knows it!

My point of course is simple, there has never been a system of slavery where the slaves willingly sell themselves into slavery, ergo any government with at it's root cause for existence the institution of slavery is inherently evil.

If you were alive in, let's say, 1855, even you may have had a different opinion. What do you think? You gonna give me a moment of honestly here or are you just gonna be content in your self righteous hindsight.

And before you attempt to prove that the United States was some how equal to the confederacy in that regard, may I point out that the solo clause in the constitution covering "slavery" does not use the words slave, slavery, or Negro.

Typical yankee.

Admit nothing, deny everything, make counter accusations.

in point of FACT, the fascists of the immediate pre-WW2 period were MOSTLY confined to the larger cities in the north. DYs are notorious for being ANTI-Semites & racists of the worst sort.

actually, you KNOW better. the CSA's 100,000+ black troops were FREE men, fighting for FREEDOM from a faraway central government that they believed was hostile to their interests.

PITY, that you don't admit, what you KNOW to be true.

Of all days, with Israel fighting for her survival & the Mideast on the brink of all out war, your reprehensible vicious ranting, attempting to repeatedly interlink New York's vast Jewish population with somehow ""being ANTI-Semites & racists of the worst sort", demonstrating once again what a loathsome, unprincipled schmuck really is.

Diseased of the mind & soul is the only explanation for such irresponsible & scurrilous comments.

"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

Well this Yankee thinks that people who are nice and polite are nice and polite, and people who are dumb are dumb.

Since moving to the Atlanta area (3 years ago yesterday to be exact) I've met many very nice, intelligent and genteel folks.

I've also encountered some rude, lazy, slovenly, ignorant, stupid rednecks.

The main difference I see between Long Island where I came from and here is that in New York, they don't act like they like someone, when they don't. Here everyone smiles and puts up a big front, but will savage you as soon as you leave the room. I've witnessed it time and again, and I have no doubt it's been done to me.
