Yankee clauses dashed [Local landowner REALLY didn't like yankees...]
The Island Packet ^ | 07/06/2006 | JIM FABER

It appears that the Northern invasion of the South is complete -- at least it is on a patch of land known as Delta Plantation in Jasper County.

There, a diehard rebel named Henry E. Ingram Jr. made his last stand against the onslaught of Yankees, only to be thwarted by a man from Long Island, N.Y., and now -- gasp -- a French Canadian.

Ingram promised to keep Yankees out of Delta Plantation in Jasper County when he bought 1,700 acres there in 1998. His resolve to keep them out still is strong, but the covenants he put on the land don't seem to have any teeth.

Those covenants did, however, scare Canadian-raised Bluffton resident Louise Legare a bit as she was close to signing a contract to buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on the land from Bluffton Home Builders.

The list of rules she got from the builders was missing the first pages, so she went to the Jasper County Courthouse to get the missing ones. There, she found the covenants, or rules, that Ingram demanded of buyers:

1. They could not be Yankees.

2. They could not have the last name Sherman (an obvious reference to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman).

3. And the land could not be sold or leased to those whose last names could be rearranged to spell Sherman.

Clearly, Ingram doesn't like Northern folk.

Now, however, Legare and Bluffton Home Builders are working with Ingram's son, Ashley Ingram, to remove the covenants. The former Delta Plantation is on both sides of U.S. 17, just north of the Georgia state line.

"When (Legare) brought it to us, we all kind of had a good laugh," said Jim Hobbs, a partner in the home-building firm.

In fact, Legare is buying the land and home from Bill Cook, another partner in the company, who happens to be a native of Long Island, N.Y. No one at Bluffton Home Builders had seen the covenants before Legare found the missing pages, and no one has ever tried to enforce them, Hobbs said.

If Henry Ingram had his way, he still would keep Yankees off of the 1,700 acres he once owned. His holdings on the plantation have dwindled to 10 acres.

Ingram, now a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, said his son and attorney, who are both local, should be looking out for his anti-northerner wishes now.

"Yankees destroy everything they have up North, then they come down here," Ingram said. "When they destroy everything (in the South), where are they going to move next? Another country?"

Legare, who grew up north of Montreal, figures her far-northern upbringing must be especially abhorrent to Ingram.

"I must be more of a Yankee," she said. "I'm the person he really doesn't want to live there."

Amazingly, Legare is a much better choice to own Southern land than a New Yorker, according to Ingram.

"French people are much better and more desirable than a Yankee," said Ingram, who once owned video-poker casinos in Jasper County. "They don't stick their noses in other people's business."

The same feature drew Legare and Ingram to the land -- nature. Ingram said he's seen Carolina panthers, bald eagles and fox squirrels on the land. It is that quiet beauty Legare is after.

"I was raised in a very nature-like environment," Legare said. "I think the nature is beautiful in South Carolina."

Ingram, who says he is leaving Texas for Costa Rica soon, cites the boorish manners of Yankees as one of his prime dislikes for them.

"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

Nah... they were Union reenactors.

Maybe copperheads.

Exactly 62% of the people in my state voted for Bush in 2004. That's a bigger margin than he got in Texas. So...who did Maryland go for anyway?

No we went to rifles oh, about 145 years ago.

It be so long that it is near on impossible to get the muzzle onto ones own foot . It be strictly for killin the enemy at a distance with it's deadly spread shot .

If yon enemy doesn't blow you away first with the superior range and accuracy of their 58 caliber, model 1861, Springfield rifled musket or their Enfield pattern 1853 three band percussion rifle that is.

Y'all had a distressing tendency to plink your own generals almost as often as you plinked ours.

Actually the Model 1841 Whitney "Mississippi" Musket was used by the North and South. But not in any great quantities by either side.

while death by 'friendly fire' did happen ,and has always happened in war , it was always a sad mistake and usually in dusk or darkness . Whereas the quality plinking was done with clear intention and often suitable results.

When you get here remember a couple of things: always wave back, always smile back, say "yes ma'am and no sir" to those who are older than you (regardless of race) and you'll be fine! With regards to Southern cooking, be prepared to eat everything, and I mean everything, fried! ;0)

However, that does not translate into your seeming insistance that every Yankee is a liberal.

I never made this assertion. My argument is that there are far more leftists as a percentage of the general population than in the south... far more.

My home state of New Jersey cast more votes for President Bush (1,670,003) than Alabama (1,176,394), Mississippi (684,981), South Carolina (973,974), Tennessee (1, 384,375), Kentucky (1,069,439), Arkansas (572,898) or Louisiana (1,102,169).

This is a ridiculous argument given the total population of New Jersey. You have to look at the percentages. The northeast is the most left-leaning section of our country... and that is undeniable.

I never said that State power was unlimited. The People (meaning you and I and other non-political types) can always fall back on their GOD given right as expressly stated in the 2nd paragraph of the Declaration of Independence - "When a government becomes abusive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it laying a new foundation for government which will secure these ends." Jefferson went on to say that "it is a duty" and this was meant to keep politicians in check, reminding them that they are servants of the people. In case you're thinking that the Declaration was a one time good deal - NOT SO. It is where our uniquely American beliefs are written for posterity. However, the Federal government was limited in its size and scope as was distinctly laid out in article one. The States had the major portion of power prior to 1865. Now the Fed is a behemoth that can stick its nose in your business anytime it wants, this is also a direct result of the Northern victory in 1865.

"The Supreme Court disagrees with you. The unilateral secession of the southern states was unconstitutional"

As they ruled after the fact in 1867 or later. Up until the War of Northern Aggression there was no limit on how many states could secede. By your reasoning and reliance on a kangaroo court's (as it was back then) ruling, the original thirteen colonies had no right to secede from Great Britain. That, Bubba Gump, goes against everything the Founders' believed and laid out in the Declaration of Independence! And while you're yakking about Southern States talking secession in 1830, lets journey back down memory lane a few years earlier shall we?! I seem to recall that the New England States were talking about seceding from the Union if the Louisiana purchase went through.

Lincoln's view that the "Union was perpetual and in existence since the founding of the country" was WRONG.

Because you say so?

NO, because the facts of the Paris Treaty of 1787, and the recognition of the original 13 Colonies being "Free, Sovereign, and INDEPENDENT States." Also each State going through a ratification process prior to adoption of the Constitution. In other words, for you who are too simple minded to figure it out, the People of each State had to agree that they would cede certain limited power to the central government prior to joining the Union. Thereby the Union did in fact NOT exist prior to the ratification of the Constitution! AND as has been stated before, it was not a (key word here bubba gump) national constitution, but a federal (meaning shared power) constitution among the thirteen free, sovereign and independent states; and that was when the "Union" was born. Any state that was admitted to the Union thereafter was also deemed to be sovereign with all the whistles and bells that went along with the admission to the Republic.

Like it or not, the Constitution is the supreme law of the land and not the ratification documents. Where the two conflict, the Constitution is supreme. It says so right there in Article VI.

And the Constitution was trumped by the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence (like it or not). So if real power was supposed to rest with the People, then the People were exercising their God Given right and DUTY (which ALSO trumps the Constitution) "to alter or abolish it".

Perhaps early American history isn't your game. I know! Lets have a spelling contest!

While you were there, I was in The Marine Corps.

And almost all of the relics belonged to the Howard Family or were donated by Jefferson Davis's wife.

Since I love simple questions, let me ask you one about the Museum, who is closer to it General Lee or General Beauregard?

What happened to the Berdan Brigade after Gettysburg?

It bounced around from corps to corps until early 1865 when the 2nd was disbanded. The units, the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters, did have an active service life but I don't think that they were ever brigaded together. Berdan spent most of the war in D.C. talking up how good he was.

Excuses, excuses. The long and short of it is Maryland went strong for Kerry. What's the expression? If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem?

I have my profile up... what state do you reside in?

Kansas. Sixty-two percent of my fellow citizens voted for Bush. That was a bigger percentage than Texas gave him. We had to work to overcome states like Maryland.
