UC Santa Cruz chancellor jumps to her death in S.F.
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 6/24/6 | Cecilia M. Vega and Jaxon VanDerbeken

UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton, apparently despondent over work and personal issues, died Saturday after she jumped from the roof of a 42-story San Francisco apartment building, police said. Denton's partner, Gretchen Kalonji, is listed as having an apartment in the building.

Denton, a well-regarded engineer, had been named this spring in a series of articles examining UC management compensation. She had been criticized for an expensive university-funded renovation on her campus home, and for obtaining a UC administrative job for Kalonji.

Denton, 46, died Saturday morning after jumping from the Paramount at Mission and Third streets, police said. The building is advertised as San Francisco's tallest luxury rental apartment building. A guest at the nearby Argent Hotel called authorities at 8:17 a.m. to report a body on the roof of a parking structure below the apartment building, police said. The medical examiner ruled her death a suicide.

She had been on medical leave from the university since June 15 and was expected to return to work this week, said UC Santa Cruz spokesman Jim Burns.

Denton's mother, Carolyn Mabee, was in the building at the time of her death, police said. She told authorities that her daughter was "very depressed" about her professional and personal life.

In a statement issued Saturday evening, UC President Robert Dynes said Denton's death is "a tremendous loss for the entire University of California family."

Quote from article:

Misapropriation of tax-payer funds and a cush job for her lesbian lover.
Why is corruption a consistant trait with libs in power?
Furthermore why is coruption tolerated by libs?

My wife and I were in San Francisco this morning (we drove 100 miles from Sacramento to escape our 105 degree heat). Mr.xx Ms. Denton's demise tied up traffic for about 15 minutes. We thought about suing the University, but, well, it would have interfered with out breakfast. Our condolences to the survivor(s).

"Permanent solution to a temporary problem. Sad."

It took me a minute to get what you wrote.

I want to beat them all, I don't feel very bad if they go down in a plane or car crash, but when I hear that one of them was feeling so much pain inside that they kill them selves, it breaks my heart.

I remember the summer of '99. I was driving from San Jose to Seattle and had the misfortune of going through Sacremento on an afternoon so hot the sunlight coming through the slanted front windshield on my car blistered the back of my hands as I steered the car.

I can see why you'd need to get away.

Isn't Santa Cruz U. one of the most liberal universities on the planet?

What a terrible tragedy for the woman and for the family, whatever their beliefs and politics.

I would hate to die and have it known that Freddy the Freeloader was my surviving partner.

An unfortunate end to this woman's career. Sympathy is due to her family.

At the same time, that does not mean that hard questions should not be asked about why she was hired as chancellor of UCSC. Did the hiring committee give priority to her qualifications as an administrator, or did she fit the quota profile of a woman who advocated the advancement of women and minorities in the sciences and engineering based soley on the considerations of gender, race, and ethnicity?

Anyone in a position of authority and leadership is subject to criticism. There were legitimate questions raised about abuses in the UC system for executive positions and this woman's conduct as chancellor in particular. Perhaps this ignoble ending of her own life will bring additional pressure on the UC system to reform it administrative practices.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. She survived the fall, it was the sudden stop at the end that did it!

Everyone,
Whatever or whoever she is, it is in bad taste to ridicule that person right now.

From what I can tell, this person stood for everything I oppose, but I think we should give this person, who was obviously disturbed, a pass.

Just my opinion.

She was absolutely trying to look like a man. Could she not look in the mirror, or have friends talk to her, letting her know she didn't look feminine? Strange that a woman would let herself so deteriorate into asexuality. That may provide some insight into her killing herself....

When I say "Pass", I mean pass on the derision. We don't need to do that with the policies or actions of that person.

I understand your point, but would you have the same commentary if the person were the one mentioned in your tagline? Just curious.
