Dan Betzer and Louie - "Tell The Bible Classics Volume 3"
Wow. I had forgotten ALL about Bad Love. (thanks.) {grin}
OK, how about Brand New Key and My Name is Mikey - I've Got a Nickel?! HA! :-)
Bootless, a kindred spirit. You knew WPLJ from Tony Pig and Pat St. John. WNEW was harder rock at the time. Can't remember the Jazz station.
I remember hearing Magic by Pilot at Sandy Hook, NJ.
Do you recall when an FM station began playing Beatles 24/7 for about a year...think it was WYNY.
Speaking of Cotton-eye Joe...
Went to dinner tonight at a Texas Roadhouse on the other side of town. Our family was seated and waiting for food (I was munching on peanuts and watching the St. Louis/Milwaukee game), when several waitresses moved in front of the bar and started singing/dancing to C-e Joe...:|
It's a song I never really cared for--and the looks on many of the diners showed I wasn't the only one...8^)
My dad thought Melody was the anti-christ.
When the 80s came I started listening to WRSU (Rutgers) and Princeton (forgot the call letters) for metal, punk and weird alternative. Listened to Dr. Demento on some Jersey Shore station.
And then there was the Howard Stern. Don't know if you istened to him but he used to have a speed-punk intro from the Double-Oh Zeros called This Is The Howard Stern Show. Funny stuff. Good times.
Dr. Demento--is he still on the air?
I avoid Muskrat Love too... Or anything by Bread.
Agreed!
I found out that David Gates, one of the lead singers of Bread, is from Tulsa. The story I heard was that Bread was once a rock band playing the club circuit in and around Tulsa when they signed with the record company. And like all acts that make it big with the love songs, the record company wanted them to cash in on LOVE. So, they quickly became the Bread we loathe. I think Gates lives in Tulsa.

Nowadays, I listen mostly to a strange collection of celtic, classical, folk and 80s, mostly. Sixties is OK, long as it's ca. 65 and up, with a few exceptions. 70s before 77... but I am selective.
Mostly I listen to celtic. My mp3 player is loaded with celtic and Palestrina. Eclectic.
:-) I remembered on the way home that Elton John/Sedaka was Bad Blood, not Bad Love.
I do remember WNEW, too, and yes, that had more of an edge than PLJ. The jazz station had "RV" in its call letters.
You saw Pilot in person? Whoooo! We had Focus (playing Hocus Pocus - remember that?) at our high school in their One Hit Wonder year. And just today, I heard Ace's "How Long" twice in one day, after umpteen years. Weird.
Speaking of NY radio, do you remember a talk show host on, I think, WHYN, self-destructing on the air one night in 1970 or 71? His show was probably going downhill, and he left it to the callers whether he should stay or go. (Kind of a Michael Savage precusor in that regard) He was gone the next night. I think his show was 10pm - 1 am.
PS - I never listened to Stern, really.
Re: the self-destructing talker, it may have been on WHN, 1050 at the time.
1970 talk radio was too early for me. I was 3. I can still remember the music though.
Wanted to clarify, I heard Pilot on the radio on the beach, at Sandy Hook.
Was Allison "Nightbird" Steele on WNEW? God, her voice was magic.
Oh, okay. :-) Hey, I'm only 10 years older than you... :-)
I found it = the jazz station ws WRVR, 106.7. Excellent station. Here's the site I found to dig this stuff up:
