Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.
Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.
The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You cant stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.
FReepers cant will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we cant put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.
Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans wont do for the prevailing wage.
So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.
So what?
Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.
It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.
Bush wont let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You wont win, you cant win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.
We lost this one.
Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.
The posing pols, especially Bush, are running the old smoke and mirrors scam, he/they will not fund or ever give the necessary resources to protect us and our borders.
When it come to illegal immigration, I HATE ALL THE LYING POLITICIANS, Period
Funny, they DID enforce immigration laws when it came to sending a boatload of Jews back to Nazi Germany...
The first Candidate that comes out AGAINST Illegals while seriously enforces our laws and borders, will WIN whatever office he is seeking. That includes the Presidency.
President Bush can give the Illegals Amnesty and a chicken in every pot, and STILL not win one Illegal over to vote for a Republican. Believe it.
sw
Is that what your crystal ball says? If so you might want to look into getting a new one. Like the ports deal the political pressure against such a policy will never allow for it, especially in an election year.
Is it time to play the race card already? Who cares about the nationality of the invaders? It's the invasion that must be stopped.
Unfortunately, the answer is that most of the congress critters want to win.
I never said "just" small companies. I said "mostly" small companies.
They found a way around the horrific minimum wage and regulatory laws which were unfairly keeping them back; they found a way to stay in business.
Socialism always wreaks havoc. I believe if these heavily socialistic laws weren't in place, we wouldn't be in this mess because there would be no incentive to hire Mexicans.
"Shouldn't be diarrhea alert be attached to Puk...Poodle Dog's usual inane rant?"
From this and from some of your other replies, I'd say you have some kind of fixation on that particular bodily function.
The Drug War and the War On Illegals are one and the same thing, IMO.
I'll be interested in seeing any good answers to this.
See post #44.
They're trickling in...still waiting for the rest of the groupies to show up. I love the opening question of "would you rather be right or win"? Hilariously, it was meant as a rhetorical question, with the expected response being "we would rather win, of course!" Fortunately we're not all that vapid.
Well....I'd rather be half right and win half than be completely right and win nothing. Pukin', here's the key part of what you said:
Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.
My reading of that is that we can get meaningful border enforcement if we include some kind of amnesty. As distasteful as "amnesty" may sound to some, I'll accept amnesty if it includes securing the border. Because I think the only political alternative to amnesty + border enforcement is the status quo. And that's a whole lot worse.
Trying to squeeze the toothpaste back into the tube won't work. So I'll settle for making sure the lids is tightly on the remaining tubes.
I agree with you to the extent that the immigration problem has been allowed to fester for so long that it will be impractical (to say the least) to get rid of all the illegals. And even legal immigration at the present levels is a problem. People are literally selling out their country.
I also agree that there is a Republican majority in Congress, but not a conservative majority. Do we hold our noses and act to keep a broad coalition together, or do we say "hell no" and stand (or, most probably, fall) on principle and educate and rebuild.
Interesting piece you wrote. But I have no solutions.
Of course, my son's company pays the taxes on those workers, too.
I am all for letting people in to work with proper identification and permission. Then we could settle this question: is it that there aren't enough workers, or is it that there aren't enough CHEAP workers? I believe the answer is the latter.
I vote for securing the border, huge fines for employers who violate the law, deportation when someone is discovered to be illegal, and a window of time to allow them to go home and reapply legally.
Oh BS.
The President has been Vincente Fox's lapdog, while demonstrating NO leadership regarding this illegal invasion.
You and your goofy ranting pal Poodle Dog can kiss Dubya's RINO @ss all you want -- it doesn't change the fact that Bush has been derelict in his duty to preserve the constitution."
"And one more thing. I think some people here just don't like Mexicans."
You are 100% FOS.
This is satire, right? If you win, but only because you have embraced something that isn't right, what have you won? If you're sleeping with the enemy, how are you distinguishable from the enemy?
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"
I think something else is going on. Up here in Michigan I have never seen so many Illegals as I have seen this year.
Dems will win this november unless we enforce existing laws and/or pass tougher ones!
