Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

[ Bush Jr. is proving to be every bit the stammering confused little idiot he appears to be. ]

Besides that he looks like Alfred E. Nueman.. One wonders if that is not on purpose.. An obscure or veiled attempt at humor from "our betters" that trotted him out to run for President... obviously this political game is rigged.. The rigging will become obvious(so some) when Hitlery is elected.. But then, denial is strong in the republican party.. When she is elected.. these conversations will be long forgotten.. As is all the conversations about "son of, read my lips, no new taxes" in 1999... Dubya is not as wimpy as his daddy but the weak wrist don't fall too far from the tree.. Dubya is a RINO with a dull horn.. ANY president could perform a decent war with good generals and admirals.. for the president merely sips julips in the White House.. in opulence and comfort.. trying to LOOK tough.. Cheney and Rummy are the tough ones not Dubya..

You're wrong, you'd get the same 80% to support it that support stronger enforcement. And make no mistake, amending the constitution to end the anchor babies will definately come to pass.

You are in the 20% minority that would not favor such action. Not good company for you and your desires.

.....Strictly enforce existing laws pertaining to hiring of illegals .....

This was tried and shown to be a worthless policy. There is no way an employer can prove that a person is illegal.

There is so much good fake ID available that it is impossible to separate illegals from legals.

The population pressure on the southern border is too great to dam up. The pressure must be relieved by providing spillways to manage the flood.

I want to see the laws of our country obeyed, and allowing illegal aliens to come here and be granted amnesty is insane. I would rather see us lose the election.

BTW, PD on a previous thread you admitted to hiring illegals to work around your home. I would say you are slightly biased.

So instead of deporting 20 million people, we can just arrest, try and lock up the 5 or so million who employ them.

If you want to solve the problem, that's what you'll start doing.

Of course, you'll never have to do that to 5 million business owners, as once you start doing it, most will ensure they don't hire illegals as they don't want to be put in jail.

As it is now, all business's know that there is zero enforcement and they can hire anyone they please.

This isn't just a political issue, it is a matter of national survival. The flood of illegal immigrants will sink our economy and our social systems. They are fueling an underground economy not to mention their involvement in drugs and crime. The illegal immigrant problem is no longer confined to the border states. It is spreading throughout the country.

Pubs do not hold a majority in the senate that allows for cloture votes to happen whenever pubs want it to, thus there is no control of the Senate as you describe it.

Minority controls the vote in the senate so long as they can come up with 40 votes.

More than 50 votes in the senate is not always enough to see a measure passed.

Get rid of all regulations and small business's will still hire the cheapest labor to make a profit. Again, Citizens lose out.

Citizens lose out when businesses make a profit?

Do you usually pay more for things than you have to? Do you usually sell things for less than you can get?

Do you think some people deserve to make more than other people with the same skills?

Do you embrace or reject capitalism and the free market? Do you embrace or reject government intervention in private dealings?

There are many smaller towns whose economies are sadly based on the use of cheap labor of illegals. I am only familiar with one small west Texas town, but I would guess that most of the smaller towns in Texas are politically very conservative. With no compromise among Republicans on this issue, my guess is that there are some tough times ahead for the Republican Party.
