Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

Bush has already won on immigration, the borders are wide open, millions enter illegally every year, and Spanish is becoming the dominate language in the south west. Bush is a happy man things are going his way.

I'm confused.

That is apparent.

Our government is "gutless," but not becuase they won't enforce the border laws. Silly.

Thinking past the obvious Jr high short term forced based "solution" to a policy which is the only one which will actually address the problem is a little more difficult.

The President is only one of the people who can "seriously change" another countries' policy.

Do we give "aid" to Mexico? Do we agree to beneficial trade policies with them? Do they benefit from any other agreements with us?

Of course. And the list is long.

Pressure needs to be brought to bear on them.

Of course that's not as much fun as pointing guns at a bunch of people, foreign and domestic.

Strictly enforce existing laws pertaining to hiring of illegals and they will self deport. No work. No free ride. Time to go home to their turd world countries and demand political changes there.

100% correct.

No brainer.

Apparently, some of these posters have no brain.

What kind of immigration policy will we have if we have all Democrats in office? What will America look like then?

from post 239

"I guess you and I will have to wait and see, wont we?"

You indeed advocate inaction and claim that waiting for a proper time is what you sould see happen.

It does not make common sense to allow a known problem to fester when something CAN be done about it. Can isn't the issue...WILL is, specifically political will.

More people agree that the illegal invasion has to be reigned in more than they agree on any other one issue.

You can claim you don't advocate inaction but indeed you do. Calling it something else doesn't change the truth.

Pukin, you don't think that the fact that you employ illegals takes away some of your credibility on this matter?

Nobody would be able to eat in any restaurant in the southwest, nor stay in any hotel if they did that.

I will not be blackmailed! We will figure it out. Maybe we need to be eating and staying at home more, cutting our lawns instead of galivanting all over the country. But we must not let them convince us we need them because we don't.

"If a couple of Republicans lose their sets, so be it "

I hope no incumbent Republican loses his set; if they won't vote for enforcement of immigration laws *now*, imagine once they're eunuchs.

Here in this post you demand action from legal Americans and fail to make any demands on the illegals.

Sad not to mention transparent.

Oh, but what about the million or so that were in the streets this last week? Don't you think that they'll starting violent riots if we actually start enforcing the laws instead of self deporting? So, the obvious answer for any self-respecting Republican President is to appease the potentially violent invaders at the expense of the sovereign citizens of the country that elected you to office. Right?

Well, most of us regretably understand we can't do much about sending the 20 million here back home. We do realize the massive illegal invasion into our Country has to halt NOW.

Anything we can do to discourage more Illegal immigration into our country is a good thing.

No different then what Bush wants.

I want neither and I won't vote for a Republican that wants the same thing the Democrats want just because he's a Republican.

Choosing a time for victory is not the same as doing wrong.

You must not be a Patton fan. Anyway, with respect, I don't think you are advocating doing wrong. I've been around here long enough to know that much. But, I think on this issue you ARE wrong.

You suggest we delay victory (or that it will be delayed) on this issue and that we should sacrifice victory on this issue in the effort to secure victory for the RHINOs who are allowing the problem to grow.

You want us to "swallow" the blue pill.

BTW, under my logic we would have bombed Iraq, captured and executed Saddam, declared victory and gotten the hell out of there...:-)

Yet another example of "There go my people. I must find out where they are going so I can lead them."

Anyone that refers to themself in the third person should be given a wide berth. I believe the word is megalomania.

Me neither. How did anyone manage to eat out or have their lawns look nice 30 years ago? I don't remember there being piles of dirty dishes in restauants and grass 3 feet high around houses. We did fine without them then and we'll do even better without them now.

No. Some inventor will come up with a lettuce picking machine, thus cutting the costs of our lettuce. This is exactly what happened in Florida, where they finally came up with a citrus
harvesting machine in the last few years.
