Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.
Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.
The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You cant stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.
FReepers cant will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we cant put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.
Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans wont do for the prevailing wage.
So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.
So what?
Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.
It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.
Bush wont let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You wont win, you cant win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.
We lost this one.
Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.
"you're a bot."
When you have something intelligent to add, I'll let you know.
You've got that right! I'm in IN, I love mexican food, was joking with a waiter this last weekend, speaking some pidgeon Spanish after a couple Coronas, asked him if he had a `papel verde' (green paper?) and he acted liked I'd goosed him. Turns out the owner hires illegals from Guadalajara/Jalisco.
But I'm really going to miss the food, like I missed Labatt Blue while Canada was being run by . . . Democrats.
We don't need the image. Just use words, please.
The GOP has with open borders, globalist trade policies and out of control spending driven off the cliff. The only thing that can save the GOP now is to get serious about controlling the borders and slowly repatriating the illegals. Personally, I don't think are going to do a damn thing, and I fully expect the GOP is get it's butt kicked big time in 08.
Can say the GOP was not warned, there have been a number of us that have been warning for years about the terrible Bush policies and what the end result would be both for the GOP and the USA. That we have today is the ending of the end of the GOP, and perhaps even the USA. thank you very much kool-aid drinkers.
If you haven't read about how many Japenese were spies in Hawaii before the war, maybe you should do a little historical research that embodies the truth and not repeat anti-American propaganda without knowing what you are talking about. We were in a fight for our lives and the measures taken may have been extreme but they were necessary at the time.
I feel for the honest families that were rounded up, but at the same time I understand why it was done. You apparently don't.
To make a start would be to build the border wall FIRST, atleast it's a beginning to slowing down the problem. The tougher issue for all involved is WHAT TO DO WITH THOSE HERE ALREADY? I honestly believe it has to be a state-by-state, city by city clamp down beginning with their paychecks. NO CASHEE FOR ILLEGAL WORKERS! Make them PROVE they are here LEGALLY, and if they can't - NO PAYOLA...period. How long would it take for them to go back to Mexico or get in line to get a green card (which is the LEGAL and acceptable route) if everyone involved from the employers to the banks to the grocery stores would just ENFORCE THE LAW!!!
Only in that we believe we can get away with ONLY border enforcement. We cant. It would be deadly to the Conservative cause. We would be putting Democrats back in power for another 20 years.
They are hear, and they are not going anywhere, unless we are prepared for Armageddon for the Republican party.
Time to deal with them, register them so we know who they are, and tax their asses off like the rest of us.
You where wrong about the DPW/UAE terminal deal and you're gonna be wrong about this issue too. There is nothing politically conservative about allowing illegal immigration to continue unabated. America has been invaded by some 12-15 million illegal aliens over the last 20 years. More are coming every day. These illegals are criminals. What was once a misdemeanor should be made a felony. Simple as that. If PresBush wants to veto such a bill, fine. A Bush veto will not help Republicans get elected this November. American public opinion is opposed to illegal immigration. Americans want the borders secured and employers who violate US law punished for hiring illegals.
If they are allowed to secure the border AFTER they make the current crop legal, they will never do it. Hold their feet to the fire. Build the fence NOW! If you build it, they won't come.
"where do you get the idea that this forum does not reflect popular opinion against Illegal immigration?"
If being against illegal immigration means devoting the resources necessary to go out and round up 10 million people for deportation, I'd say that's a minority view.
Again, no matter how much someone has in the way of "guts," NO PRESIDENT can seriously change another country's policies unless you propose an invasion of Mexico.
I have a much better solution: build a wall, rabidly pursue all employers who hire illegals, and immediately deport anyone who is illegally here.
It really is simple, and has nothing to do with the Me-hee-co economy.
It's unfortunate, but you're right.......
No way a wall, or anything else happens until the ILLEGALS already here are asured they can stay......
P'ing off 19% of the electorate is not good for long term survival.......
Well stated as usual. Realistic and clear-eyed. Pragmatic. Appreciated.
ok, Now a small little gripe. I almost missed this infamous PD rant because "someone" didn't get me on the ping list. You're not out to abandon your base are you? ; ).
Let me add IMHO to that. I don't see easy answers and I'm willing to change my views if I see good ideas emerging.
I agree, but there can be a better, more advantageous time to do what is right.
This aint it.
I have NOT posted to anyone in particular.
Why are singling me out for further censorship??
Please explain -- and please BE SPECIFIC.
Is this yet ANOTHER case of speciial treatment for an "elite" Freeper?
You'd better straighten out FR posting rules because I see quite a few flames flashing around.
...smell a RAT????
