Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.
Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.
The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You cant stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.
FReepers cant will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we cant put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.
Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans wont do for the prevailing wage.
So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.
So what?
Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.
It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.
Bush wont let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You wont win, you cant win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.
We lost this one.
Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.
And the dems rounded up native born Japanese Americans and put them into concentration camps.
We haven't lost this one. The battle is just being joined.
We're not going to get over it. This is a matter of principle, not political expediency for some Party to take advantage of so as to win another election for a bowl of pottage.
This is our country. It doesn't belong to illegal gate crashers - no matter how cheaply they pick lettuce, lay blocks or what kind of "family values" somebody claims they possess. Nor is it ultimately controlled by their enablers who prefer slave labor, expanding the welfare state and getting illegal voters!
You will need a massive new bureaucracy to ensure that every small business and church in America is not giving ANY benefit to illegals. This will require a major tax hike. I don't think a tax hike is the answer.
"If you're caught without being registered, you can never, ever be here as an immigrant. Period. EVER."
Regardless of how this whole mess shakes out, I like that idea = step 1.
To whom it may concern, please knock off the personal stuff.
"I just think you don't like non-Mexicans."
What a brilliant reply. Why, I'm nearly rendered speechless.
Bingo!
Lol, "trickling in" like a spent bladder...
" I love the opening question of 'would you rather be right or win'? Hilariously, it was meant as a rhetorical question, with the expected response being 'we would rather win, of course!' Fortunately we're not all that vapid."
Well, Puk...Poodle Dog is the master of the obvious as he p*sses out his drivel in his rants aimed at the Bots.
I look at him and them as comic relief.
This question has been answered so many times it gets tedious to repeat. FINE AND JAIL employers who hire ILLEGALS. This will end hiring of ILLEGALS. Once that is done, they will leave of their own accord, we won't have to deport them. It is simple, enforce the law! Also, beef up the border patrol, pass an amendment that does away with anchor babies and viola! you have an ILLEGAL free America(or as close and you can get).
Yeah, that's a pretty shameful fact.
Control the border = step one.
Then
50,000 a month per state deportation quota.
Basically that they should be persona non grata.
How did 20 million people get here?
Most illegals live within a few hundred miles of the border.
I believe it's on our side.
Today, on the TV we see part of the 11 MILLION illegals marching in the streets along with a few high school kids skipping out of class. These people can't vote! They're not carrying AMERICAN flags in that protest!
In reality, the majority of America is solidly behind us on this issue. Even the border democrats were trying to act tough and seal the borders for votes.
If Mexicans can cross the borders freely, so can terrorists. Who can stop them without a sealed border?
No, Puken. This is a winning issue for us. Only the far left liberal states would object to a tighter immigration policy.
Because that cheap illegal labor isn't so cheap when it's subsidized by my tax dollars. Los ilegales vaya al diablo.
Wrong. It's the job of ICE. Let them do it.
Are you for or against hiring more border patrol agents?
The price of any amnesty program should be what I call the BFW.
And the W stands for wall.
He was wrong about that chick Kerry was supposed to be screwing too.
bttt
Yeah? So?
I call them as I see them. The phone rang the moment I posted this, so I was away.
What I hope happens, is that after Bush wins on this, angry FReepers will finally wake up to the notion that we do not reflect popular opinion. Whether we like it or not, the country is a lot more moderate than we are. It is still a Conservative country for the most part, but it does not reflect the overall Conservative prevailing view. This issue should prove that once and for all, and when it does, I'll be whipping out my "I told you so" list yet again.
All this pro/anti-amnesty energy needs to be redirected to ensuring that come this fall the Dinosaur Press will NOT be controlling the news.
