Bush: Outsourcing painful, but remedy is worse

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Praising India's expanding economy, President Bush warned Friday that fears about job outsourcing to other nations should not prompt the United States to limit global trade. "It's ... important to remember that when someone loses a job it's an incredibly difficult period for the worker and their families," Bush said in a speech in New Delhi. "It's true that some Americans have lost jobs when their companies move their operations overseas," he said. "Some people believe the answer to this problem is to wall off our economy from the world through protectionist policies. I strongly disagree."

We don't need isolationism, we need to eliminate socialism.

Take a look at what percentage of one's income goes to taxes. Then look at the minimum wage laws, and other financial losses most companies must incur by law just to stay in business. On top of that add unions which mostly just demand more pay for less work. Result is: the cost of doing business in the USA is so high it's cheaper to send it elsewhere.

Unfortunately, socialism is getting so ingrained, and is so complex, that it's far easier to call for isolationism - which is just another form of socialism.

Don't just call isolationists ignoramuses, explain why socialism is the problem and why isolationism is just protecting/reinforcing socialism.

It's a simple equation, really.

Lower costs equals lower prices for consumer goods which, in general, equals a higher standard of living.

If we had to buy DVD players manufactured only in the United States, they'd still cost about $400 each. Ditto every other consumer electronic (not to mention computer component) worth owning.

In any case, in terms of manufacturing jobs - even China is losing manufacturing jobs. The day of making things via human labor will be over in ten or twenty years in any case.

Several of my engineer friends have commented on Bush's idiotic praise of outsourcing. Engineering enrollment in the US in down precisely because our politicians have decided that it makes sense to send technology jobs overseas.

Nonsense. I teach engineering. Enrollments are cyclical; they rise and fall. But salaries are up, and none of my students have had any trouble getting an engineering job.

Some students may be influenced by all-our-jobs-are-going-overseas doom and gloom that is being spread on the Internet by posts such as yours. Others are scared away from engineering because they think it too difficult. And some may consider engineering insufficiently glamorous. (Plenty of TV shows feature lawyers; how many show engineers?)

One more thing. Politicians should have no say about where companies hire their engineers. Politicians do not have a good track record when it comes to managing the economy. We would all be better off if governments were limited to their constitutionally specified functions.

That's right. The FACTS don't matter. Anything that does NOT validate your emotional based hysteria is "spin" "White House PR" "Talking Points"

No, this is REALITY. Take some basic Econ and learn the FACTS, not just regurgiate the nonsense Mike Savage and Pat Buchanan scream at you.

It is the SOVIET UNIONS Economic school.

Sorry but the globalist "free trade" system is so soviet union. Beginning with creating a global command economy (redistribute wealth to third world countries so they can 'participate' in the so called global economy), flowing into a central soviet-- which means council-- to manage it (WTO)

Agreed we are in a world market and we have to react to the current world market.

If America and that matter Britain do not outsource and as sad as I am about the lose of a manufacturing base it will not be competitive.

The company I work for has had to cut manufacturing jobs and start up a joint venture in China purely to stay alive if it had not it would have gone bankrupt. It has to compete with local Chinese manufacturers and other companies using goods manufactured in China and similar places.

If we do not do it others will and we loose our market world position and our economy fails.

My company ensure that our intellectual rights are protected by ensuring that design is not outsourced but still done in house but the actual manufacturing of most large items are now done in China.

Isn't it US middle class fighting in Iraq?? Bush, I hope your "outsource" ideas are lies too! Govern with hypocrisy, "say one thing, do another". Hope US gets more

I agree with Bush. We cannot wall off our economy any longer. It's a new world. Compete or fall by the wayside. It's harsh but it's the reality.

That's right. CLING to your ignorance. Maybe it is this fudemental inability to evolve that explains why the Whine All The Time Choir is in such a panic to avoid "Outsourcing" (Aka EXTICTION). It's Called Capitalism. Learn to live with it. It only works better then every other economic system every tried by man.

It's a very confusing issue and I don't pretend to know what the answer is. Many conservative economists (from American Enterprise Institute, to cite one) claim that outsourcing is a painful but (in the long run) beneficial and inevitable consequence of a globalized economy. Look at the auto business. Ford owns Volvo, Jaguar, Kia, etc. and the 60,000 parts of a car come from all over the globe. What the hell does "American car" mean? When Sam Walton started Wal Mart he proudly had a policy of "made in the USA" but now it's hard to find anything that's made here and not in China. The highest protectionist tariff this country ever had was Smoot-Hawley under Herbert Hoover and everyone agrees it deepened the depression. We get directory assistance on our phones and discover we're talking to someone in India to get a neighbour's number! On the other hand, free markets are not a level playing field. Our products are not permitted markets in many countries. At the same time many foreign markets "dump" products in the USA (some made by a labor force that's paid about 90 cents per hour) to get a foothold in our economy. The question seems to be not if all this is right but whether it's inevitable in the 21st century globalized economy (?) Who knows?

"More globalist dogma from our Globalist President.

Outsource our jobs & technology and import poor, uneducated [and illegal] workers while our trade & spending deficits and national debt grow ever higher...there are bad times coming sooner or later."

EXCELLENT POINTS!!!

Globalism is as it implies- The end of America. Now we can actually see the writting on the wall. That is for those who are willing to see.

We cannot wall off our economy any longer.

Our economy isn't 'walled off'. We grant greater access to our economy than any other country in the world.

"A couple of days ago on his radio program, Michael Savage made reference to a report (I haven't seen it posted, nor found any other links) that GW said we will need 60 million 'immigrants' to support the Social Security program in a few years.

If that is GW's new, revised solution to Social Security, this nation is in big trouble."

SOUNDS LIKE A EUROPEAN SOLUTION, DOESN'T IT?

That's a part of the immigration equation for sure. A declining birthrate because the childbearers are now part of the workforce and because of widespread abortion pushes us toward the European model of economic stagnation.

If all families were good Catholics pumping out babies every two years, we would be able to better deal with the disasterous policies of becoming a nanny state at least for a while.

As it is now, our politicians, like the Euros importing ME & North Africans, want more bodies from any source no matter what the current cost.

It won't matter in the long run, our entitlement programs will swallow our economy. These low-level workers, many working for cash, can't possibly fund our socalist programs. In fact as you know, much of the illegal workforce takes more from society than it puts in so there is no gain now, much less in later generations.
