Churches urged to back evolution

Churches urged to back evolution By Paul Rincon BBC News science reporter, St Louis

US scientists have called on mainstream religious communities to help them fight policies that undermine the teaching of evolution.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) hit out at the "intelligent design" movement at its annual meeting in Missouri.

Teaching the idea threatens scientific literacy among schoolchildren, it said.

Its proponents argue life on Earth is too complex to have evolved on its own.

As the name suggests, intelligent design is a concept invoking the hand of a designer in nature.

It's time to recognise that science and religion should never be pitted against each other Gilbert Omenn AAAS president

There have been several attempts across the US by anti-evolutionists to get intelligent design taught in school science lessons.

At the meeting in St Louis, the AAAS issued a statement strongly condemning the moves.

"Such veiled attempts to wedge religion - actually just one kind of religion - into science classrooms is a disservice to students, parents, teachers and tax payers," said AAAS president Gilbert Omenn.

"It's time to recognise that science and religion should never be pitted against each other.

"They can and do co-exist in the context of most people's lives. Just not in science classrooms, lest we confuse our children."

'Who's kidding whom?'

Eugenie Scott, director of the National Center for Science Education, which campaigns to keep evolution in public schools, said those in mainstream religious communities needed to "step up to the plate" in order to prevent the issue being viewed as a battle between science and religion.

Some have already heeded the warning.

"The intelligent design movement belittles evolution. It makes God a designer - an engineer," said George Coyne, director of the Vatican Observatory.

"Intelligent design concentrates on a designer who they do not really identify - but who's kidding whom?"

Last year, a federal judge ruled in favour of 11 parents in Dover, Pennsylvania, who argued that Darwinian evolution must be taught as fact.

Dover school administrators had pushed for intelligent design to be inserted into science teaching. But the judge ruled this violated the constitution, which sets out a clear separation between religion and state.

Despite the ruling, more challenges are on the way.

Fourteen US states are considering bills that scientists say would restrict the teaching of evolution.

These include a legislative bill in Missouri which seeks to ensure that only science which can be proven by experiment is taught in schools.

I think if we look at where the empirical scientific evidence leads us, it leads us towards intelligent design Teacher Mark Gihring "The new strategy is to teach intelligent design without calling it intelligent design," biologist Kenneth Miller, of Brown University in Rhode Island, told the BBC News website.

Dr Miller, an expert witness in the Dover School case, added: "The advocates of intelligent design and creationism have tried to repackage their criticisms, saying they want to teach the evidence for evolution and the evidence against evolution."

However, Mark Gihring, a teacher from Missouri sympathetic to intelligent design, told the BBC: "I think if we look at where the empirical scientific evidence leads us, it leads us towards intelligent design.

"[Intelligent design] ultimately takes us back to why we're here and the value of life... if an individual doesn't have a reason for being, they might carry themselves in a way that is ultimately destructive for society."

Economic risk

The decentralised US education system ensures that intelligent design will remain an issue in the classroom regardless of the decision in the Dover case.

"I think as a legal strategy, intelligent design is dead. That does not mean intelligent design as a social movement is dead," said Ms Scott.

"This is an idea that has real legs and it's going to be around for a long time. It will, however, evolve."

Among the most high-profile champions of intelligent design is US President George W Bush, who has said schools should make students aware of the concept.

But Mr Omenn warned that teaching intelligent design will deprive students of a proper education, ultimately harming the US economy.

"At a time when fewer US students are heading into science, baby boomer scientists are retiring in growing numbers and international students are returning home to work, America can ill afford the time and tax-payer dollars debating the facts of evolution," he said. The original poster equated himself with God. Wouldn't you consider such an action at least arrogant and delusional? You most certainly would believe the fellow to be lying, wouldn't you? Hell, I think it's quite blasphemous, myself.

When a mere mortal can apply logic to figure out God's ways, I, for one, stand in awe!

If God is that inscrutable then why worship Him? How can you tell it is worth it? Because the Bible says so? Perhaps this inscrutable being, unreachable by human intellect or logic, sponsored the Bible for a joke... When a mere mortal can apply logic to figure out God's ways we might be able to work out if God requires worship/acknowledgement or not.

One of your major difficulties is that you have been steeped in the concept of an illogical God for so long.

In many ways the early concepts of the Jewish God are similar: He had to be sacrificed to in order to placate Him; He got angry at the drop of a yamulke; and He liked smiting a lot.

Indeed, poor Uzzah got smitten just for trying to keep the Ark of the Covenant from falling off the cart. Well, at least he spared the oxen that stumbled.

I have just returned from Wally-World.

When I was picking up some underwear, I noticed the goofy, silly shorts for guys.

One pair had Garfield saying, "Of course I love you!", on the front.

On the back it said, "Now go away"

... a truly omnipotent God does not have to resort to theatrics.

Oh yeah: this'll be GREAT theater!!

Revelation 20
 11.  Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.
 12.  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
 13.  The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.
 14.  Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
 15.  If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Sorry to throw out bible verses.

WHAT!?

Never be sorry!!!

NIV Acts 1:16-17
 16.  and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus--
 17.  he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."

NIV Acts 8:32-35
32.  The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture : "He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
 33.  In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth."
 34.  The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?"
 35.  Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

NIV Acts 17:2-4
2.  As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
 3.  explaining and proving that the Christ  had to suffer and rise from the dead. "This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ, " he said.
 4.  Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and not a few prominent women.

NIV Acts 17:11-12
11.  Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
 12.  Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

NIV Acts 18:24-28
24.  Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.
 25.  He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor  and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.
 26.  He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.
 27.  When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed.
 28.  For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

NIV Romans 1:1-4
 1.  Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God--
 2.  the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
 3.  regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David,
 4.  and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

NIV Romans 4:3-8
3.  What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."
 4.  Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation.
 5.  However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.
 6.  David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
 7.  "Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
 8.  Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him."

NIV Romans 10:11-13
 11.  As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
 12.  For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,
 13.  for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

NIV Romans 15:3-4
 3.  For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me."
 4.  For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

NIV 1 Corinthians 15:3-5
 3.  For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance : that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
 4.  that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures ,
 5.  and that he appeared to Peter,  and then to the Twelve.

NIV Galatians 3:8
The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you."

NIV Galatians 3:16
The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed,"  meaning one person, who is Christ.

NIV Galatians 3:22
But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

NIV 2 Timothy 3:14-15
 14.  But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
 15.  and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

NIV 1 Peter 2:4-8
 4.  As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him--
 5.  you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
 6.  For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
 7.  Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, "
 8.  and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what they were destined for.

NIV 2 Peter 3:16
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Please explain why every genetic marker (ERV, pseudogene, etc) found in the same place in the genome of any species of Old World monkey and any species of New World monkey is also, without exception, found in the same place in the genome of all monkeys and all apes, including ourselves, and in no other species.

Not only THAT, but I just noticed MY left hand is in the same place as a spider monkey's!!

My concern with "sola scriptura" Prostestantism --if I understand it aright--is that it cannot ultimately traffic with any other intellectual endeavour, least of all science.

Why do you think this way?

"The only hoax I am aware of is Piltdown Man......then I got a feathered dino from Chino to sell you; complements of the Nat Geo folks."

I was talking about a hoax that the scientific community believed. *Archaeoraptor* was never accepted by science; National Geographic goofed, and paid for it's sloppiness. The hoax was perpetrated not by scientists but by fossil sellers.

I find it difficult why you would accept the CONCEPT of a me paying with money if I kill your dog (which represents real loss to me..., as money is a representation of my time and life and energy..., it is just a tangible representation of those), and recoil from the idea of me paying with my life when I brutally and wantonly murder your wife and children (ok, I admit I am going for the emotional jugular). Once we move past the concept of me suffering (even if it is just the idea of losing a tangible representation of part of my life), then I don't see why one would recoil from paying IN my person, if the crime is heinous enough.

Uhmm... that's not quite what I said. If you were to kill my family or friends I'd have absolutely no problem with putting you to death - quite the contrary.

What I wanted to say is that if I accept a material compensation for a transgression committed against me (i.e. damaged my car), I don't mind who pays me or does some useful work I value (like painting my house).
On the other hand in your example I won't accept any substitution for the real culprit and as far as I know, neither does any western justice system.

You have my sincere thanks.

And I thank you ;)
