WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."
In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.
The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.
When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.
You really are a dope, aren't you? We're here talking about a show that is SO UN-PC that it offends almost everybody and you're saying that I am PC?
Thanks for outing yourself as what appears to be an anti-Christian bigot.
You're lower than dog crap; I never said anything close to that; you've just made an utter fool out of yourself on this thread posting about something you know nothing about and now you're striking out.
Go ahead, though; it's not like you have any credibility at all on this forum.
Exactly. I don't mind people saying that they don't like the show, although I will still debate with you and try to convince you otherwise :). I just can't tolerate when people blatantly lie about it (churchillbluff), or whine about how the show is vulgar, and then become vulgar themselves (Texas Eagle).
Lighten up sherlock.
He is exposing heresy for what it is......going after a piece of bread instead of the King of Kings.
He isn't mocking "the one true church" at all.
You may be a Christian, but you're not a conservative. At least not under the definition that I grew up with - - conservatives respected traditional values and didn't applaud people who undermined, scorned and laughed to derision the core values of our culture. It's the Sixties Leftists who did that -- - conservatives wanted to conserve what the Sixties Leftists (and now, South Park and its ilk) insisted on tearing down.
A conservative's brand of comedian was an intelligent comedian, with class - a Benny, Burns or Hope - somebody who would never use religions as a punching bag or go for laughs with vulgarity.
In my book, conservatism equals class, and an appreciation for class. South Park ain't got no class - it's about tearing down the culture, not conserving it.
Well, that's why I love it; just a good old fashioned dirty old man liberal pervert...
My children shudder when I start discussing South Park with their children, now in their twenties.
My wife and I still laugh at the "Tunnel of Tolerance."
Evidently I'm not a menstuating anti-Christian bigot now!
People with common sense aren't going to waste one minute of their lives watching the sophomoric South Park, or most anything else on t.v. for that matter.
I ~love~ people who stand for morality and decency!
You just have to understand that some of ya are dang funny :~D
Definitely I'm saying that. There's no more "PC" comment than to deride defenders of traditional values as - to use your word - "uptight." That insult is straight out of the Sixties, launched by Timothy Leary and the rest, and later adopted by mainstream liberals. You've shown your colors pretty well.
I am both and still love SP.
I attend a conservative Christian college and lots of us love SP.
No, I'm been criticizing people for LYING -- L Y I N G.
Every one of your posts could be admitted into court as Exhibts to prove that.
You're lying.
Well, in case you missed it, I'm a menstruating anti-Christian bigot!
Top that, if you can!! :-)
I thought this was old news. Didn't they make fun of the whole concept of Mary Apparitions, as oppposed to Christianity and it's message?
I find it funny, and a little sad, that this thread has garnered well over 300 posts in a short time, while so many other substantive threads languish. In my more cynical moments, I speculate that some of the fundy-type posters who latch on to threads like this (and especially the Evolution-Intelligent Design threads) are really deep-cover trolls whose purpse is to chew up FR's bandwidth by stoking inane, pointless arguments. I mean, people cant REALLY be that ignorant, can they?
Wait, what was I thinking. Never mind.
Which is why you should watch it. You won't be able to answer him intelligently unless you study.
ROTFLMAO!!! OMG. That is the funniest thing I have read all day. I hit my head on my monitor laughing.
Don't be offended by churchillbluff's snotty remarks; this is a person who spends his days and nights looking for and posting anti-American articles on FR.
You two are really having an intellectual conversation. I'm mesmerized by the incisive nature of your name-calling. In fact, if I wasn't such an imbecile I'd probably be able to respond to your provocative analysis. But alas, I've watched too much SP.
What? Change the channel? Don't you know that they have a right not to be offended by ANYTHING on TV, whether they watch it or not?
Now, who DOES that sound like? Certainly not conservatives.
