WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."
In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.
The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.
When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.

This is a funny thread. I've never seen this show. I've also never seen adults get so testy about a cartoon.

I suppose when the entire cultural elite essentially makes its living taking potshots at Christianity, when South Park does it, it just seems unoriginal. That part of the episode wasn't taking potshots at Christianity, it was taking potshots at idolatry. People who think that statues of things are magical is as pagan as it gets. Those who see images of holy figures in food, or think that carved items crying blood is a divine act, are looking for earthly idols, not God.
I'll admit that South Park wasn't very gentle about making that point, but 'tact' was never really their strong suit.

I don't remember South Park ever making fun of Jesus. Can you provide some examples?

I have never watched southpark. What is funny is watching those that emmulate it by repeating the voices or dialog...

I love Southpark...Woodland Critter Christmas is still one of my favorites. I bet you wouldn't like this one either...
Chicadee-ey: You think God would have sex with a porcupine? No only Satan, Prince of Darkness would do that!
Foxy: This is cause for celebration! Let's sacrifice Rabbitty and eat his flesh!
Rabbitty: Yay! Sacrifice me to the devil!
Critters: Yay! Yeah!
(Beary gets a cement cart with inscriptions and a red star. Rabbitty hops on it. Beary takes a knife and inserts it into Rabbitty's chest, making a long incision down his stomach. Everyone grabs a part of him.)
Chickadee-ee: Drink his blood! Drink his blood!
(Everyone has a part of the rabbit to eat. Stan looks mortified.)
Squirrelly: (Dancing in blood) Yay! Blood orgy!
Critters: Blood orgy, yay!
(Everyone starts screwing, some of them in the ear. Evil, satanic music is heard. So is a disgusting, gooey squishy sound.)
Critters: What a special time and a special day, a Woodland Critter Christmas!
Squirrelly: Hail Satan!

It's amazing how so many so called conservatives on FR like this show. That just goes to prove that imbeciles come in all political orientations.

I totally agree. They take NO prisoners and really do give it to the left better than any show I have ever seen. Political Correctness has been DEAD on this show since episode one and people should not be shocked or feign be offended by anything Matt and Trey do.

I don't want to get along with a lot of these purists. It's damn embarassing for FR; a stereotype, if you will.

I don't remember South Park ever making fun of Jesus. Can you provide some examples? No, but as you probably remember, they did rip Tom Cruise and Scientology pretty good.

To answer your question why is it so hard to see that many people would think un-highly of storylines such as a statue blood
As the tagline on this thread says, many would find it disgusting.

You are very confused about what "righteous indignation" is. Still with it, eh? This response was righteous indignation as well.

These aren't adults; adults have common sense.
The Brown Shirts love criticizing stuff they READ about, not having seen it themselves; you know, sort of like liberals do.

The guys who created Southpark are smart enough to know the only way they can bash Islamofascists is to spread it around to other religions.

As you stated above, you have never seen it. So how do you know Jesus vs. Santa was making fun of Jesus?
What it actually did was show that Americans have forgoten Jesus and turned to Santa on Christmas.
Maybe you will try again with Jesus vs. Satan in their boxing match or Jesus's Cable Access show.
