BISHOPS' PRESIDENT BLASTS 'SOUTH PARK' EPISODE LAMPOONING MARY (Disgusting!)

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."

In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.

The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.

When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.

This is a funny thread. I've never seen this show. I've also never seen adults get so testy about a cartoon.

I suppose when the entire cultural elite essentially makes its living taking potshots at Christianity, when South Park does it, it just seems unoriginal.

That part of the episode wasn't taking potshots at Christianity, it was taking potshots at idolatry. People who think that statues of things are magical is as pagan as it gets. Those who see images of holy figures in food, or think that carved items crying blood is a divine act, are looking for earthly idols, not God.

I'll admit that South Park wasn't very gentle about making that point, but 'tact' was never really their strong suit.

I totally agree. They take NO prisoners and really do give it to the left better than any show I have ever seen. Political Correctness has been DEAD on this show since episode one and people should not be shocked or feign be offended by anything Matt and Trey do.

What it actually did was show that Americans have forgoten Jesus and turned to Santa on Christmas.

Maybe you will try again with Jesus vs. Satan in their boxing match or Jesus's Cable Access show.
