WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."
In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.
The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.
When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.
This idea that people who don't like bathroom humor and blasphemy are "uptight" is utter ignorance. The great comedians - Hope, Benny, Burns - were funny, not vulgar. Vulgarity is the tool of people who are without talent or without character. Benny would never go for laughs by blaspheming someone's religion. He had too much intelligence, talent -- and class. That's what our culture lacks today - class, and an appreciation for class. This debasement is evident even here on FR, where dunderheads hold up the gutter humor of Southpark as something to admire. They've been raised in - and have drunk deeply from - an environment of cultural sewage that started spewing out in the 60s.

In fact, Stan(?) -- one of the major characters, anyway --- is Jewish and issues re: the same repeatedly come up.
That's bullshit. The "Super Best Friends" episode rips everone.
You can say it over and over and even believe it if you like, but it is just not true. You have been provided example after example of how South Park treats other religions but are blinded by your irrational hate to see them.
Yes, but it does mention Jesus' brothers. And if you think about it, back then people were having large families. People didn't have just one child back then unless there was something wrong with them.
Seems to me its those who can't stand a little criticism of South Park that have the overly taut sphincters.

This is really quotes from the show? I have only seen about 2 minutes of it just to see what all the talk was about.
"Others" know that you posted something you can't or won't stand behind; every adult does things that children shouldn't do. But you won't be honest about it.
That sounds more like another assault on Christianity -- by repeating the canard that Christians blame Jews for Jesus' execution.

Yes, he has, and it shows the Catholic faith for what it is that only Mary's mocking is cared about.
As a Prot, I realize it is just a cartoon and if I don't like something, I go get a drink of water. It is over with when I come back and the show is hilarious again.
They showed Mohamed (sacriligious right there according to Islam doctrine) as a member of a superhero team.
They showed Moses appearing to the Jew Scouts like the CPU in Tron.
They gave away all the big (and not coincidentally stupid) secrets of Scientology.
They smack everybody in their turn.
A little criticism? I believe your first post on this thread might have started the ball rolling in this direction when you called those who watch South Park imbiciles.

all this stuff has happened, but those that haven't seen the show will still criticize it by saying it hasn't done that stuff.
