Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.
The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.
"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."
Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.
Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.
In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."
Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.
Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

The south DID sell the majority of it's cotton in Europe. Millions of bales per year.
That is why the Declaration doesn't refer to secession it refers to Revolution.
It deals with individual rights.
So the slaves of the South had every right to revolt based on the principles of the Declaration.
That is why Calhoun (and the other pro-Confederate posters on these threads) have to lie about what the Declaration referred to, individual liberty for all men.
But if the slave had it good as a slave, what was the beef that the Southerner had being part of the Union?
One thing these threads are good for is exposing the true nature of the political belief's of the Confederate supporters.
Your claims to being defenders of liberty are as hollow as the attempts to defend slavery and secession.
None of the 13 colonies were sovereign, none had a separate foreign policy.
the central government SHOULD do LITTLE except protect the borders, coin the money & otherwise leave the citizens & the STATES ALONE. (IF we want your advice OR opinion on ANY subject affecting our state/region/hometown, we'll ask for it.)
the STATES were/ARE sovereign, as the STATES created the central government.
MOST southerners just want the central government to just GO AWAY & leave us ALONE/UNmolested.

Really?
What is the title of this thread?
No one cares about the Civil War except the whining sore losers from the South who cannot let it go, can't get over the idea that they were beaten and rightfully so.
Read post 518.
the PLAN was to KEEP northern slaves in perpetuity & only FREE southern slaves.
this turned out (THANKFULLY) to be "politically inexpedient" after the WBTS.

Sure as hell brought YOU here. If the South is the only ones who cares, why do you come to these threads?
See the Cornerstone speech by the vice presidency of the Confederacy, Andrew Stephens.
In this they were following the Father of the State Rights philosphy, John C. Calhoun.

Correct. A War between the States became a necessity.
Heh, I had to read what your response was to. Glad I did.
Thank you.
As the vice-President of Confederacy stated,
The constitution, it is true, secured every essential guarantee to the institution while it should last, and hence no argument can be justly urged against the constitutional guarantees thus secured, because of the common sentiment of the day. Those ideas, however, were fundamentally wrong. They rested upon the assumption of the equality of races. This was an error. It was a sandy foundation, and the government built upon it fell when the "storm came and the wind blew." Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the Negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery -- subordination to the superior race -- is his natural and normal condition. [Applause.] This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. http://members.aol.com/jfepperson/corner.html
Stephens recognized that this nation was formed on the principle of equality for all men but had to deal with slavery as a necessary evil.
The South turned that on its head by rejecting the Declarations equality principles and stated that Negro was in fact made for slavery.
And that principle is written right into the Confederate Constitution, where slavery is mentioned as is the Negro to be enslaved.
After the war, the South made it point to rewrite history and make it appear as if they were fighting for liberty.
They were fighting for their own liberty, the liberty to expand slavery as much as they were able.
The Confederacy was founded on facist principles and had they been successful they would have been a facist state, based on racial principles.
the damnyankee REVISIONISTS of academia have gone out of their way to deny the TRUTH about lincoln.
to quote Dr Lainie Briant, (PhD,history, Harvard):
There are MANY things, which while FACTUAL, which MUST be hidden away in dusty library stacks, such that the common people will not misunderstand the GREATER TRUTH required to create the DESIRED & PROPER political & social attitudes.(emphasis:MINE)
in other words: TELL THE COMMON PEOPLE comforting/knowing LIES, so that they can better be CONTROLLED (by their self-appointed betters!)

But in the American system (as noted in the American College Dictionary), no U.S. State is ever called a Nation-now are they?
No ones calls New York, the nation of New York-do they!
No member of the Union (with the exception of Texas) was ever a sovereign nation.
MEA CULPA!

denying the TRUTH makes you look like a DUNCE.
now put on your nice POINTED/conical cap & sit in the corner, like a good boy.

I have his collected works, show me in them, so great unknown truth that I am unaware of?
I know that Lincoln believed that slavery was immoral (unlike many pro-Confederate posters) and that the Declaration of Independence referred to all men, not just the colonists.
Well, we are back to the typical watie rant.
You completely blew past the part about "Nation" being historical identity, while "State" is government.
If I say I am Scottish, it it because I am of Scottish NATIONAL lineage. It would have no bearing on whether or not I was an active (or even living memeber of) said government.
