The bedroom of a luxurious Mexicali residence a block from the border hid a secret tunnel leading to neighboring Calexico, Mexican officials said yesterday.
Inside the passageway, investigators discovered lighting and ventilation equipment, a closed-circuit security system, hydraulic machinery and various tools, according to a statement yesterday by the Mexican Federal Attorney General's Office, or PGR.
The findings led agents to surmise that "the tunnel was used for illicit activities, presumably related to drug trafficking," the statement said.
A middle section of the passageway was initially discovered in the United States early Friday by U.S. Border Patrol agents checking for tunnels in a residential area of Calexico. It is the third tunnel found in Calexico in the past 15 months.
"From what we've seen of this tunnel, it appears to be one of the most sophisticated and elaboratedly constructed that we have discovered to date," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is conducting the investigation.
Smugglers of migrants and drugs have historically used underground passageways to avoid detection by U.S. and Mexican authorities. Mack said yesterday that U.S. investigators were searching for the tunnel's other end: "This an ongoing criminal investigation, and we're still trying to locate a possible exit to the U.S."
On the Mexican side, the tunnel's entrance was found Saturday by agents from Mexico's Federal Agency of Investigation, know as AFI. The entrance led from the bedroom of a house about 100 yards from the border in an upscale neighborhood known as Colonia Nueva.
The house, on Francisco I. Madero Avenue, shared the same lot with a second residence that also was searched, according to the PGR. Agents found a closed-circuit security system outside the two houses. Both houses were vacant at the time of the search, the statement said.
The statement did not say who owned the property.

Unfortunately some people want resources being used to protect Americans to be diverted to reducing the number of illegal dishwashers and garbage collectors they fear are taking all the good jobs away from them.

No, we just want the immigration laws already on the books enforced. It's that too much to ask?
Apparently, you're in favor of selective enforcement of the law or worse yet outright lawbreaking.
What are you, some kind of open border libertarian?

Illegals crossing our borders is a MAJOR security threat. With the millions of them crossing our borders, how hard could it be for a few Arabic types to come across with them? Ya could drop a Arabic into a group of Mexicans, and most could not tell the difference unless they really looked good, and some could not even then.
Considering these also transport tons of cocaine and marijuana, how hard could it possibly be for one to carry five pounds of Anthrax spores?
And do not try to feed me that line about how "none of the 9/11 hijackers came from Mexico". Waiting until AFTER it happens to act is suicidal. As porous as the border is right now.. terrorists would have NO PROBLEM crossing the south border. As it gets tougher to come in other ways.. do not kid yourself in thinking that option will never occur to them.

but the government sure likes more tax payers.
That idea isn't quite true.
First, most illegals only pay sales tax on purchase. They don't pay income tax. They send billions of dollars (untaxed income) to Mexico.
Second, because of their 'situation', the rest of American taxpayers end up subsidizing their education, their social services, and their welfare (health services). This is more billions of dollars out of the American economy.
Every illegal, in sum total, ends up being a negative, economically. The ones who benefit are the illegals and the companies that employ them. The ones who lose are the American taxpayers.
But someday, a few will cross with some highly contageous third-world diseases and spread plague and contagion that will wipe out a significant portion of the un-immune, unsuspecting population. So, that wipes out your net gain of potentially new taxpayers.

The potential is much more dangerous than a myopic 'we are keeping them from picking broccoli'.
The point is: Without controls, we have no idea
who are coming across the borders, but we do know they are coming across by the thousands.

RUTHERFORD INSTITUTE.COM ^ | DECEMBER 13, 2004 | JOHN W. WHITEHEAD As an American, I have always been inspired by the fact that my country welcomes those who seek refuge. And as long as our government officials maintain our borders and ensure that those coming from other countries are screened in order to protect those who legally live here, the concept of welcoming immigrants is a noble one. However, something has gone awry. Indeed, illegal immigration into the U.S. has become an immense problem and a clear and present danger. Documented illegal immigration has more than doubled in the last decade. It has grown, by conservative counts, from 3.5 million in... |

washington times ^ | February 13, 2005 | Joyce Howard Price Contagious diseases are entering the United States because of immigrants, illegal aliens, refugees and travelers, and World Health Organization officials say the worst could be yet to come. In addition to a list of imported diseases that includes tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, hepatitis B, measles and the potentially deadly parasitic disease Chagas, officials fear what could happen if the avian flu, which is flourishing among poultry in Southeast Asia, mutates so that it is capable of human-to-human transmission through casual contact |

Our government is serious about protecting Americans.I hadn't noticed.
Unfortunately some people want resources being used to protect Americans to be diverted to reducing the number of illegal dishwashers and garbage collectors they fear are taking all the good jobs away from them.
And when they're not washing dishes and collecting garbage...
Jesus J. Robles-Sanchez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was convicted by a Jefferson County jury last week of second-degree assault and driving without a license for a crash in May that injured a woman in Herculaneum.
Assistant Prosecutor Steve Jerrell said Robles-Sanchez was driving drunk on Commercial Boulevard at Riverview Drive in Herculaneum on May 7, when his SUV struck the rear of a car driven by Angela Biehle as she waited to turn left onto Riverview Drive.

yeah.. out of line, I apologize... just get sick of the crap going on and nothing being done about it. I can't speak for others, but I'll accept your apology at face value.
As a legal immigrant, naturalized American, and high-wage earner, I share your frustration at the current state of immigration policy on both sides of the border. But our mutual goal of fair immigration is undermined by the actual and perceived racist motives of those at the forefront of efforts to fix this broken system.
