Marijuana Lobby Grows in Sophistication (After you smoke a joint, I do Too!)

WASHINGTON — Pot. Cannabis. Hemp. Weed. Grass.

The herb takes many names. But in the nation’s capital, where the marijuana lobby (search) was once the recreational diversion of Playboy Magazine's Hugh Hefner, pro-pot special interest groups have crystallized the divergent issues behind the plant and gained a seemingly unified voice.

________________ Puff, Cough, Puff, Cough________________

"It’s a no-brainer. It makes no sense putting old and sick folks in jail for an herb that makes them feel better," said Bruce Mirken, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project (search), which was established in 1995 by Rob Kampia, a former mainstay at the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, the first pro-pot lobby in Washington, D.C.

Yes, the irony is delicious, isn't it? I knew someone who was addicted to methadone for 15 years. They still have methadone, but I'm not sure they have the places where the junkies all turn up and stand in line. Think they've gotten more subtle with it.

Ever learn the history on why pot was criminalized? It has something to do with one man's crusade to stop our our daughters from losing their innocence to those crazed pot smoking jazz musicians from the 20's or something like that. Saw it on the history channel.

"As long as we tolerate legal alcohol, anti-marijuana policy is pure hypocrisy."

Spot on.

The Volstead was a miserable failure. Not doing much better with the herbs either. Monumental waste of tax dollars.

Win? Lose? How does that work? Which group has changed the other groups' mind?

One side brings legitimate political arguments to the table, the other brings cute sayings like "loserdopian." The latter, luckily, is a dying breed.

Let's do it. And lets get rid of those obnoxious little tags on hair dryers that warn people not to use them in the tub. If you're that dumb, you deserve it.

A bit of a simplification, but Agreed.

Which of course doesn't answer the question; Win? Lose? How does that work? Which group has changed the other groups' mind?

"No, my perscription drug program doesn't cover that. Will AARP be supporting an insurance rider for that too?"

Who knows? Maybe? Now that the Taliban have been defeated, and Al Quaida have been chased out of Afghanistan, Afghan drugs no longer support terrorism, so I imagine it is now ok to indulge.

Indeed it may be our duty, in order to help support the fledgling democracy and fragile economy of our new dependents, the Afghani people, and their War Lords.

Very sad, indeed. The government's ills at trying to cure the 1960s and 70s. A childhood friend of mine got into heroin; told me years later that if she'd known how addictive methadone was, she'd just have suffered the withdrawal of heroin.

Sadly, I doubt she's alive today. She'd be 51.

Why do we make something that is used for relaxation and enjoying life, illegal?

One must have a mind in order for it to be changed. Some on this thread don't qualify.

Absolutely. But poppy production is a sizable portion of Afghanistan's GNP, and we don't hear much about their sheesh production.

You are one sick nutto! cnI. redruM, my arse.

You'd like to kill anyone or anything that anyone could enjoy, probably including sex unless it was to produce offspring. I rather think you would enjoy killing. Murder, Inc.?

You're very bright. < /sarcasm >

That kind of thoughtful comment is just one reason no minds are changed.

Which group has changed the other groups' mind?

It doesn't matter. We throw the arguments out there; the political winds take care of the rest (and right now, it's trending away from the anti-pot crowd). But as long as conservatives staunchly support big government statism whenever it suits them, we'll never really make any progress from the standpoint of ideological consistency.

While you were sleeping one off, Protagoras, your side lost. We won. You'll note that everyone on my side, Kevin Curry, Roscoe, cinFLA, Dane, Cultural Jihad, and all the other Drug Warriors have gone. Not needed anymore.

They asked me to just clean up, shut off the lights, that kinda thing.

But hey, thanks for playing. We have some wonderful parting gifts for you backstage. Don't let the door hit ya.

I dunno, the guy I know people would have called hopeless... he's about 50, married, sober for over 5 years. Daughter just had a baby within a month of him (his wife) having a baby, so his daughter and grandaughter will be the same age.

It doesn't matter.

So you agree, there have been no losers or winners.

Well, he kicked a heroin addiction...my hat is off to him. There but for the grace of God go I.

Looks like lots of us on this thread have grown up around drugs - and marijuana. Looks like lots of us have "fed our heads." I certainly have.

Just goes to show you, us old hippies can clean up good - and be a productive part of society, if not the wiser for our little experimentations.
