Confederate States Of America (2005)
Yahoo Movies ^ | 12/31/04 | Me

Posted on 12/31/2004 2:21:30 PM PST by Caipirabob

What's wrong about this photo? Or if you're a true-born Southerner, what's right?

While scanning through some of the up and coming movies in 2005, I ran across this intriguing title; "CSA: Confederate States of America (2005)". It's an "alternate universe" take on what would the country be like had the South won the civil war.

Stars with bars:

Suffice to say anything from Hollywood on this topic is sure to to bring about all sorts of controversial ideas and discussions. I was surprised that they are approaching such subject matter, and I'm more than a little interested.

Some things are better left dead in the past:

For myself, I was more than pleased with the homage paid to General "Stonewall" Jackson in Turner's "Gods and Generals". Like him, I should have like to believe that the South would have been compelled to end slavery out of Christian dignity rather than continue to enslave their brothers of the freedom that belong equally to all men. Obviously it didn't happen that way.

Would I fight for a South that believed in Slavery today? I have to ask first, would I know any better back then? I don't know. I honestly don't know. My pride for my South and my heritage would have most likely doomed me as it did so many others. I won't skirt the issue, in all likelyhood, slavery may have been an afterthought. Had they been the staple of what I considered property, I possibly would have already been past the point of moral struggle on the point and preparing to kill Northern invaders.

Compelling story or KKK wet dream?:

So what do I feel about this? The photo above nearly brings me to tears, as I highly respect Abraham Lincoln. I don't care if they kick me out of the South. Imagine if GW was in prayer over what to do about a seperatist leftist California. That's how I imagine Lincoln. A great man. I wonder sometimes what my family would have been like today. How many more of us would there be? Would we have held onto the property and prosperity that sustained them before the war? Would I have double the amount of family in the area? How many would I have had to cook for last week for Christmas? Would I have needed to make more "Pate De Fois Gras"?

Well, dunno about that either. Depending on what the previous for this movie are like, I may or may not see it. If they portray it as the United Confederacy of the KKK I won't be attending.

This generation of our clan speaks some 5 languages in addition to English, those being of recent immigrants to this nation. All of them are good Americans. I believe the south would have succombed to the same forces that affected the North. Immigration, war, economics and other huma forces that have changed the map of the world since history began.

Whatever. At least in this alternate universe, it's safe for me to believe that we would have grown to be the benevolent and humane South that I know it is in my heart. I can believe that slavery would have died shortly before or after that lost victory. I can believe that Southern gentlemen would have served the world as the model for behavior. In my alternate universe, it's ok that Spock has a beard. It's my alternate universe after all, it can be what I want.

At any rate, I lived up North for many years. Wonderful people and difficult people. I will always sing their praises as a land full of beautiful Italian girls, maple syrup and Birch beer. My uncle ribbed us once before we left on how we were going up North to live "with all the Yankees". Afterwards I always refered to him as royalty. He is, really. He's "King of the Rednecks". I suppose I'm his court jester.

So what do you think of this movie?

you're entitled to your opinion. it's called FREE SPEECH.

even DUMB, HATE-filled and/or SILLY ones like what you said in #4033 are OK.

in other words, you believe everyone who wore the GRAY was a TRAITOR???? were there NO HONORABLE men in the CSA's forces????

i'd HIDE if i were you. southerners tend to NOT appreciate ignorant, brainless slurs against their family and/or hateFILLED comments like that one.

otoh, i'll just LAUGH AT your SILLINESS.

also, it has been my expierience that EVERYONE who did NOT serve in the military forces has an EXCUSE for their failure to "shoulder arms & go off with the forces".

your excuse is as weak as all the rest of the EXCUSES.

i've NEVER seen you admit that ANY damnyankee EVER did anything which was less than perfect OR that any Confederate EVER did anything which was not TOTALLY FLAWED.

tell us, Mr Minister of Propaganda, what did the damnyankees do to deserve such a devoted worshiper, with closed eyes/mind???

at least we of the south don't have to hang our heads in shame OR LIE about the TENS OF THOUSANDS of UNARMED civilians & helpless POWs, who were tortured, robbed, raped, assaulted & murdered, as the HONEST & TRUTHFUL damnyankee descendants have to do.

"i'd HIDE if i were you."

Why? Are you planning a rebel invasion of Manhattan, Hartford, Boston and Providence? Let us the when, so the video camera crews can film the invasion's mud covered, broken down pickup trucks stuck in traffic or mud....LOL. Bring your own grits too, you will not find that slop up here.

Like Ronald Reagan. Of course it's been my experience that you're a habitual liar who covers his own failings with a load of bluster.

Say, did you ever contact Dr. Lubar? I just heard back from the NMAI director of curators, who is going to check if there's any Lincoln letter in their collection like the one you described seeing there a while back calling for the extermination of the Indians.

I wonder which position today's rebs are taking on the sovereignty of the Florida swamp judge who sentenced Terri Schindler to a slow horrific death via starvation?

Recall, the 'neo-confederates' always excuse southern slavery since it was "legal".

And the justification for the Confederates was a fair one, since war demands that extreme measures be taken. Why are extreme measures justified for the Davis regime but an unforgivable crime for the Lincoln administration?

They shouldn't be to any rational person.

But the operative word is rational

WELL? It was. You and your fellow Union (big government) totalitarians made sure it was legal. A. Lincoln made sure it was legal because he thought it would preserve the union and his power and his tariff. The lot of you cannot tell this forum with any ounce of conviction that the North made war preparations because of an aversion to slavery. But you will aver over and over again that the North was fighting the South over slavery. Uh, uh, no , didn't happen. The North was fighting to preserve the union and would have let slavery exist if that is what it took. So take your idiotic self-righteousness somewhere else, bub. You aren't any better than the slave owners were. If you want to make slavery the war issue then you have a lot of 'splainin' to do.

that is EXACTLY how citizens saw the situation in the 18th-19th centuries.fyi, NO STATE would have FREELY joined a union from which they could NOT have just as FREELY removed themselves, in the event that that union ceased to protect their citizens. i would suggest that you find/read the arguments of the legislators from RI,CT,VT & GA, reference how FEARFUL they were about VA & NY always "running over them".

The Articles of Confederation were considered too weak, that is why the Constitution was ratified.

It was an insurrection in Massachusetts in 1786 by debt-ridden farmers that led made many to realize that they needed a stronger central government, including Washington.(a Southerner)

As for who was afraid of whom, it was the New England states during the war of 1812 that started talking about secession and it was the Southern states who stated that they had no right to do so.

One Southern leader who believed that the Union was permanent was Andrew Jackson.

Sorry Mr pro-'legal' slavery, do not even think about throwing that commie crap at me simply because you continue to clearly demonstrate unabashed protection for a losers lost cause.

'splainin' to do. So consequently if it were 'legal' to fine or lock up for the weekend, uncivilized muckers where you reside, either incapable or simply rebelling against distinguishing proper English, ('splainin') that would alright, since it was 'legal' of course? Grow up.

I make no excuses, watie. Neither do I betray my country with false allegiances. Just as one cannot serve both God and mammon, one cannot salute the stars and bars, and claim to be an American patriot.

You know better than that. The traitors were the political leadership (i.e the fire-eaters, such as Rhett, Yancey, etc.), who led the secession movement. Few of them every saw a battle field and most died in bed.

There were plenty of honorable southerners serving in the military during the ACW - though the most honorable served in blue.

"the MISTAKE made was NOT to put a "secession clause" in the Constitution, which PLAINLY stated that ANY STATE or GROUP of STATES could leave the union by POPULAR VOTE!"

There wasn't a "secession clause" for a good reason - no one at the time had the slightest intention of leaving the Union they had worked and fought so hard to create.

And let's not hear the same old apologia about the nonexistent "reservations" by Virginia, New York, and Rhode Island. Phony arguments based on a dishonest conflation of the natural right to revolution due to oppression with unilateral secession.

Grow up.

That's one way to look at it. Great comeback. The North fought the war over secession, not slavery, no matter how many times you come up with such a brilliant rebuff.
