Hi, gang,
I was a regular contributor to the Kerry Online Forum and am now a regular contributor to the Common Ground Common Sense forum. I am a liberal, but I'll be the first to admit, I don't have all the answers. In fact, many of hte questions that matter to me probably matter to you too. I'm concerned with questions about how to tame power, whether governmental or corporate. I'm concern with the rule of law and how we can get the powerful to take it seriously. I'm concerned with the erosion of civil liberties. And yes, I am concerned about some things you may associate with liberalism--social safety nets and taking care of those who fall through the institutional cracks.
I'm here because I think agreement is overrated and that critics can be your best friends: they keep you from getting sloppy or careless. At any rate, I think there are things I can learn from you. I don't expect you are all agreed on anything--I expect there is a lot of diversity of opinion here. If you are interested in what I have said over at Common Ground Common Sense, I'm using the same handle both places, and you should feel free to come over and look around.
Anyway, I'm new here. Anybody care to give me a tour?
Conspiracy Guy probably intended a dissonance. A musical commentary on the troll, as it were.
...And perhaps succeeded on the sevent try. A dissonant 7th (as it were).
I have seven dissonant children. (It pays to increase your word power ...)
With seven dissonant children, I imagine you orchestrate the segue of multiple fugues.
A couple of them are very prone to fugues. It's quite annoying. Segue is more difficult ... it can take half an hour to get the whole crowd out of the house and into the van. But I do have a college degree in involuntary orchestration!
I remember one time as a child whilst I was in the middle of a fugue of my own. My parents were ready to go and alas I was busy being a malcontent. Long story short, they left. That was the last time I did that.
I have been so tempted to do that!!!
We have, on occasion, started the car only to find that one or more was still in the bathroom ...
And you could say the same about Plato.
Plato wasn't near out time where we could witness the millions murdered like through communism. Totally different in every way.
An excellent, might I say a sublime collection of quotations. I personally might have added Alexander Tyler's Cycle of Democracy and one that most people miss:
Robert A. Heinlein:
Political tags -- such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth -- are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort."
"We don't really care what Europe thinks of us, but we think they should be worried about what we think of them! Like next time they need their butts saved, don't call us, we'll call you."
Among your many fine ideas, the above struck a particularly fine note.
Learning how to read would be the first step.
Fascist papers screaming at you won't enlighten you.
READ. Everything. Make up your own mind!
Good advice. Thanks.
Lets Talk about Civil Liberties...it's the left that has chipped away at the 2nd amendment...it's the left that champions PC and does not tolerate free speech they do not agree with... It's the left that has derided Judeo-Christian beliefs and traditions (It seems no one on the left can read, the 1st Amendment does not separate Church and State, it simply states that the government will not support OR DISCOURAGE religion)... It's the left that is constantly trying to take parental power away...It's the Left that dictates education (causing the rapid decline in the American Educational System)... It's the Left that is OK with Labor Unions using union dues to fund political candidates... its the left that has infringed on free speech by insisting on campaign finance reform... Its the left that insists a crime against a gay or minority is worse than a crime committed against your average white male... Its the Left that has no problem whatsoever denying any civil liberties to the unborn... I could go on but it is pointless, When you mention civil liberties make sure you take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself why you have done this to yourself by supporting liberal causes.
