I'm a liberal and I'm here to learn

Posted on 12/10/2004 9:37:54 AM PST by rogerv

Hi, gang,

I was a regular contributor to the Kerry Online Forum and am now a regular contributor to the Common Ground Common Sense forum. I am a liberal, but I'll be the first to admit, I don't have all the answers. In fact, many of hte questions that matter to me probably matter to you too. I'm concerned with questions about how to tame power, whether governmental or corporate. I'm concern with the rule of law and how we can get the powerful to take it seriously. I'm concerned with the erosion of civil liberties. And yes, I am concerned about some things you may associate with liberalism--social safety nets and taking care of those who fall through the institutional cracks.

I'm here because I think agreement is overrated and that critics can be your best friends: they keep you from getting sloppy or careless. At any rate, I think there are things I can learn from you. I don't expect you are all agreed on anything--I expect there is a lot of diversity of opinion here. If you are interested in what I have said over at Common Ground Common Sense, I'm using the same handle both places, and you should feel free to come over and look around.

Anyway, I'm new here. Anybody care to give me a tour?

I guess that's what I don't like about it, the fact that it's such an obvious "tactic", like something they'd teach in the Debate Club. AnnC's bright enuff that she doesn't need to resort to such skulduggery.

Unless conservatives assert their right to speak, the liberals will shout down everytime. Witness Michelle Malkin vs Tim Russe(r)t (Mr. Potato Head). Ann is leading the way, but she needs to stop whining while she does it.

Well, I have to be close-minded. If you have an open mind, too much garbage can cloud up the mind...kinda like an outdoor pool. you have to constantly clean it out.

I look at government as a collective effort to battle evil and advance good.

What in the name of sweet Jesus are you doing on a conservative thread?

Conservatives believe that man is mostly good,

180 degrees wrong!

If you're being sarcastic, you should indicate same. Else, what the hell are you doing here?

Welcome to Free Republic. You will be at home here if you stick to facts and back up what you say. This is the place where the buck stops. This is the clearinghouse for information and proof. Nary an article gets written, a movie gets shown, a tv spot gets aired or a speech gets delivered without a full vetting on this forum.

We are the dawn of the new media called "people in their pajamas". Trust, but if you need to verify log on to Free Republic where tens of thousands of your fellow citizens will weigh in with their own facts and back-up.

We are the pin that popped the old media's balloon of power. We are the best watchdog Americans have ever had to protect them from nefarious political entities. We have got each others backs. We are watching out for each other and for every other American.

What is Free Republic? We R us.

"power and its abuses? I'd be very interested to hear how you have found peace with all that."

It is called studying history.

People always think the worst things are happening now and that the future is going to hell. It has always been that way, and the world has still survived and even prospered.

There is an ebb and flow to life and we achieve the centerline as a nation by bouncing off opposite guardrails.

Most of the things you are worrying about will work themselves out if they need working out. When they become bad enough, large numbers of people people will know it and rise up. Until then they are not bad enough to require action nor worry.

Liberals are so inconsistent on issues.

John Ashcroft ; Janet Reno was responsible for the slaughter of over 80 men women and children in Waco. She is responsible for the gassing and burning of those people alive. Many were not even US citizens. The removed the bodies of 8 year old kids with broken backs due to convulsions from the gas. The head of the FBI part of the operation openly stated to the press that they gassed them for 8 hours in order to clog the masks, unfortunately the kids didn't have masks according to survivors.

I never hear a liberal outraged by this, instead they make excuses for it because their guy was in office. If a Republican was in office while this happened I assure you most on FR would be outraged and demand impeachment, even if it was Bush.

War and Peace; Liberals claim to love peace yet never criticized Clinton for going into Bosnia. He went around your beloved UN because Russia would have vetoed the decision for war (a war France urged us to join). Even though most conservatives opposed Bosnia because American interests were not involved, most supported the troops and the President during the war and did not root against our side just to be right. Most liberals were not outraged when Clinton bombed an aspirin factory in Sudan on the eve of impeachment. In fact they made excuses for it and condemned those who said the move was suspect, which it was.

The Constitution; Most liberals claim to want govt to uphold the Constitution, but openly campaign for the 2nd amendment to be abolished. Without the 2nd the 3rd and 4th are in serious doubt, for how can you stop illegal housing of soldiers in your home or be secure from govt intrusion in your person without the 2nd amendment. You can only hope. Most liberals do not even believe in the 10th either because the love the centralized gov't and believe states have little rights.

Liberals cannot be trusted because they shift their opinion according to who the President. Dem in, war good. Pub in, war bad. Dem in, tanks can be used against civilians if they are "right wing kooks". Pub in, cant listen to a cell phone call even if its a terrorist suspect plotting murder.

One more thing, just something to consider, when Bush used the term "Bring it on" he referred to terrorist and enemies of America. When Kerry used it he referred to the President of the United States, playing on the same phrase Bush had used earlier. Sen. Murray from Wash. credited OBL with creating daycare facilities and schools in praise of a mass murderer. How can anyone actually vote for these people? I can understand a Lieberman or Miller but these Democrats love Socialism more that their country and will use anything to further the one world Socialist agenda,

This leads conservatives to believe that if men and women are left on their own, with little interference from government or criminals or whatever will mostly do good things and society will mostly progress in a good way.

You are entirely wrong.

Man is inherently bad, but it is his relationship to God that keeps him in check. "A moral people do not need a government", Laws are not for the law abiding, or the moral people. Laws are for those that are derelict.

Conservatives believe in People governing themselves and conserve the use of government to those that can not.

"Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe." --James Madison

"We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come." -- Samuel Adams

"Liberty exists in proportion to wholesome restraint." --Daniel Webster

"Your love of liberty -- your respect for the laws -- your habits of industry -- and your practice of the moral and religious obligations, are the strongest claims to national and individual happiness." --George Washington

"Reading, reflection and time have convinced me that the interests of society require the observation of those moral precepts ... in which all religions agree." --Thomas Jefferson

"It would be peculiarly improper to omit, in this first official act, my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe." Washington continued: "No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency." --George Washington

Glad you followed the #1 rule about posting a "Vanity" about your arrival.

For Newbies like you, it's the best way to get the attention you desire.

You will not be disappointed in that regard!
