Man held in deaths has Toledo connection (update - see reply #40)

The deer hunter accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others in the woods of northern Wisconsin is believed to have resided in the Toledo area as a youth and attended Jones Junior High School.

Chai Vang, 36, of St. Paul, is listed as a student at the South Toledo school during the 1982-1983 school year, according to Toledo Public School documents.

Willie Braggs, a social studies teacher at Jones, said he remembers Mr. Vang as a student. "He was in my class in 1982 and he seemed like a pretty good student," Mr. Braggs said. "It was a real shock [to hear of the shootings]."

A wave of Laotian refugees was brought to the Toledo area in 1979 and the early 1980s. They were resettled here with the help of church groups and other local sponsors. It was not clear yesterday when Mr. Vang's family came to Toledo or when they left.

By 1994, only about 35 Hmong families remained in the area, largely because many families moved to other cities where there were more jobs available and larger concentrations of others in their ethnic group.

About 24,000 Hmong live in St. Paul.

They would not have come in the first place.

Shall I say this through interpretive dance? Because it doesn't appear to be sinking in.

I don't know how many more ways I can say it.

The. Police. Tell. You. To. Tell. Them. To. Leave.

Your police officer would never have been there in the first place.

Well, I pray something good can come out of this tragedy. We own and live on rural property. People here hunt for food more than sport, to put game in the freezer to eat. Some people don't own a lot of rural hunting property. They have to depend on asking permission to hunt on other
peoples' property, and that usually works well. Some people are happy to allow hunting on their property, some aren't. You ask first. - People need to love each other more in this world. My heart aches.

No they wouldn't. It would have been SOP at the time. No reason for an investigation. They would have changed their procedure as they are no doubt doing now. Because now things are different.

This is the equivalent city scenario prior to this time. You are at a ball game. You arrive to find someone sitting in your seat. Not a huge scary someone. Just a regular someone.

Would you call the cops? No.

If you did, would they respond? No.

Would there be any sort of internal investigation later? No.

Why? Because until the moment the guy in your seat starts pumping bullets into you and everyone around you there is no reason to take that leap.

Outside of a few neighborhoods people don't get shot because they ask someone to move. They just don't. There was no reason to believe that this time would be any different. All of this is Monday morning quarterbacking to the extreme.

Game wardens are there to enforce game laws. You call and tell them that some guy is fishing with dynamite and they will come.

You call and tell them someone is in your tree stand and they will tell you to ask them to leave and if they don't then you call the cops.

They don't enforce property laws.

They likely will. Beyond that when people hear a hunter call and say, "I've been shot," they are no longer going to assume accident as they would have to this point.

And people are going to be a lot more careful where they roam because they are going to be seen as potential murderers if they are found on posted land rather then innocents lost.

This is not an improvement.

This whole affair has my jaws torqued. Having lived in NYC for more than 50yrs, I'm not a big fan of all this multi-cultural crap. You didn't deserve the reply I posted. As a matter of fact it bothered me all night that I posted it.

I think a good bit of the behavior on this thread is conduct unbecoming of FReepers .....

I didn't read all the comments here. And what I did was point out CD's post about voting for Kerry and summon the Viking Kitties.

But I don't have too much sympathy for Kerry supporters/voters and folks that are Tom Brokaw sympathizers. Seems we are cracking open the Old Media with the takedown of ole Dan Rather.

Brokaw lovers and Kerry voters - is THAT what FreeRepublic is all about ??? I think that is what DU is all about.

How many DU Trolls have been banned for their vanity threads for such postings the last six months? Plenty.

CD, check out the DU (©). Probably more to your liking.

LOTS of Kerry folks and Old Media lovers there. You might even find their posts about Kerry's coming inauguration as President in January entertaining??? hahahahahaaa!

"Thanks for the ping on this ZOT (and especially the story)."

You bet! It looks like some folks were upset here regarding the treatment of CD. Although, he didn't get the ZOT:

Whoops! A thousand pardons. I was confusing CD with another new poster from another thread who voted for Kerry and liked Tom Brokaw.

Welcome to FreeRepublic.com, CD.

Now, I'll go get another cup of coffee? Care to join me for a cup? :^)

Have a cup while you Freep !

That part I hadn't read, till you pointed it out.

First, CD thanked him for his service, then after still being "challenged" s/he disbelieved 7.62's whole story.

Unbelievable thread. Makes me yearn for the creation/evolution and NRST threads of old. Now, there was some classic flame wars on THOSE threads.

Hmmmm, It seems to me you have never hunted.

Have you ever been in the woods...Deep in the woods?

Sure, you can radio for help. Just how long do you think it's going to take a game warden or a sheriff deputy to find you?

GPS can help, but you can't move any faster than the terrain will let you. By that time the perpetrator has shot you anyway...

Dude, it aint the victims fault.
