The deer hunter accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others in the woods of northern Wisconsin is believed to have resided in the Toledo area as a youth and attended Jones Junior High School.
Chai Vang, 36, of St. Paul, is listed as a student at the South Toledo school during the 1982-1983 school year, according to Toledo Public School documents.
Willie Braggs, a social studies teacher at Jones, said he remembers Mr. Vang as a student. "He was in my class in 1982 and he seemed like a pretty good student," Mr. Braggs said. "It was a real shock [to hear of the shootings]."
A wave of Laotian refugees was brought to the Toledo area in 1979 and the early 1980s. They were resettled here with the help of church groups and other local sponsors. It was not clear yesterday when Mr. Vang's family came to Toledo or when they left.
By 1994, only about 35 Hmong families remained in the area, largely because many families moved to other cities where there were more jobs available and larger concentrations of others in their ethnic group.
About 24,000 Hmong live in St. Paul.

CD, trust me, brother, if you can't handle this on your first day, you ain't gonna make it.
Most law enforcement in rural areas travel alone. Their back up is their radio.
And most likely, the police wouldn't have responded to a trespassing call, unless the call originated within the confines of a municipality. The Sheriff's office handles calls outside the city limits, except when the calls are hunting related and then they are handled by DNR/Fish & Game or whatever the state title is for the enforcing agency.
Game Wardens typcially do not travel in pairs. State budgets do not allow it, there aren't enough of them to travel together. They are alone, with their radios, just like public safety.
I do not live in Wisconsin, but I understand the ways of rural America, where we are used to taking care of our own problems rather than die of old age waiting of law enforcement officials to respond to our calls.
Much of the disagreement on this thread is a result of people not understanding the rural culture. IMO
Resistance is Futile!
I saw no victim blaming..just second guessing..When something so terrible happens..what if and if only isn't a crime.it may be mistaken but not cause for this kind of abuse..
You said,"If they had called the police they wouldn't be dead."
That is a indefensible statement as there is no way for you to know that.
You said: " Obviously this guy didn't have very good people skills... Maybe he should have called police, and let them handle it... or he should have took some more "self-defense classes..."
That is implying that the victims were at fault.
As for you attacking members of this forum... that is evident.
It's doubtful there's a phone in the cabin on that land. I don't know it for a fact, it's just a hunch.
But even if they had a way to call the authorities, there's a strong possibility this guy wanted no witnesses. He has a history of trespassing, of threatening others with guns, and may possibly be involved in an unsolved murder.
I can speak from experience - when your life is suddenly threatened, unless a cop is nearby, you can forget getting any help from the authorities in time. They had every right to tell him as they would have any other trespasser to leave the property without any issues and without having to call the authorities to do it for them.
All your thought is belong to us
It is absolutely trial by fire..Thank you for serving my country.Wear a flak jacket, grow a thick skin and join the very best forum I know!
What is that if it is not blaming the victim?
Of course there is no way he could know if the victim had good people skills or not but that is what he said.
You could've called the "cops" but you decided to stand your ground. Remind you of anyone? My uncle died in Korea. I respect your service to our country.
Windex Call. Get over here and clean my screen. It's all your fault.
