The deer hunter accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others in the woods of northern Wisconsin is believed to have resided in the Toledo area as a youth and attended Jones Junior High School.

Chai Vang, 36, of St. Paul, is listed as a student at the South Toledo school during the 1982-1983 school year, according to Toledo Public School documents.

Willie Braggs, a social studies teacher at Jones, said he remembers Mr. Vang as a student. "He was in my class in 1982 and he seemed like a pretty good student," Mr. Braggs said. "It was a real shock [to hear of the shootings]."

A wave of Laotian refugees was brought to the Toledo area in 1979 and the early 1980s. They were resettled here with the help of church groups and other local sponsors. It was not clear yesterday when Mr. Vang's family came to Toledo or when they left.

By 1994, only about 35 Hmong families remained in the area, largely because many families moved to other cities where there were more jobs available and larger concentrations of others in their ethnic group.

About 24,000 Hmong live in St. Paul.

No you made a indefensible statement, tried to blame the victims and then attacked members of this forum.

Now you are playing the victim. Cry me a river.

I think a good bit of the behavior on this thread is conduct unbecoming of FReepers.
People are entitled to opinions, and a good healthy discussion, including heated but polite disagreements, should be the norm, not the exception.
To call someone rude names and troll simply because you think their opinion is naive or you disagree, or you'd rather just have folks agree with you, is ridiculous.
This thread really P.O.'d me, and it should all of you. This is one of those threads that this forum should be embarassed for the juvenile comments.
I've read probably hundreds of posts by many of the folks on this thread and I am truly surprised. Did y'all each too much pecan pie and are having a sugar OD or what?
Geez people, take a step back and remember who you are.
This is Thanksgiving, remember the season, please.
Welcome to FR, Credo Deus. As you see, it ain't no walk in the park some days LOL
But, the folks here are very good people and you'll come to appreciate the wackiness and take the bad with the good.

Interesting bit of info on the suspect:

Military records obtained by the Associated Press show he spent six years in the California National Guard and earned a sharpshooter qualification badge. But his primary role during his time in the Guard, from 1989-95, involved clerical duties.
After his discharge, Mr. Vang spent two more years in the Individual Ready Reserve. His records also include a Good Conduct medal.

and several of my high school buddies lost their lives in the Nam. My Dad served in Korea. Neither Korea nor Nam were officially declared wars, but dead is dead.

No. I simply have a strong reaction when someone tries to blame the victim. As Credo Deus has repeatedly. With no facts to back up his imaginings.

You should go back and read his posts. He did not "blame the victim". He suggested an alternate course of action that in hindsight seemed the more prudent. Other FReepers familiar with that area and hunter conduct felt that was unrealistic.
Making assumptions and jumping to the worst conclusions is what put this thread on the crash track, let's not add fuel to the fire, OK?

Yep :)

As for the Zot and Viking kitty stuff, if you have MeekOneGOP add you to his "ping list", you'll get real familiar with Zots and the Viking Kitties...and will understand that is so much fun you start looking for trolls where there aren't any... ;)

And thank you for your service in Korea, my Dad is a Korea vet, and he never talks about it either.
