The device they were testing was far more than just a simple x-ray - it was a virtual stripsearch. I can handle being sniffed by a dog or "sniffed" by an explosives detection device, but I'll be damned if I'll submit to a stripsearch by Hardees-rejects just to take a vacation. Yes, I want the airplane safe - but not at all costs. If they modified the device such that it displayed only a generic human figure on the screen and pointed out potential trouble spots in relative positions, I might be a bit more forgiving.

I just re-thought my post and want to add something briefly. For me to be more forgiving of the equipment, I would want it, and its operators to - at all times - be under the control and supervision of airline employees, with government employees specifically barred from using it. Why? Mission creep. I don't want to have to walk through 10 of these things on my way to work.

Counter propaganda came out about that today. I heard several times this morning about full body scans causing cancer and such.

So someone is already gearing up to keep the full body devices protested out of airports.

If you are worried about people hiding explosives in body cavities, you have to be just as worried about anally as vaginally cached material. For that matter, I can imagine ways to make an ingested bomb - though as a poster above notes, it's difficult to control contamination of such individuals with minute but detectable traces of explosives.

I'm not sure, though that the exact scenario set forth in the article was likely that of the Russian attacks - according to Russian authorities in at least one case the hijack alarm was set off, which suggests that someone didn’t just detonate explosive in the bathroom without notice.

In any case I can’t see that such methods are all that additionally bizarre compared to other likely successful means, it seems to me that once you have made the decision that it's a reasonable act to suicide while taking a plane load of civilian passengers with you, the exact methods is of little additional moral or pratical consequence.
